Seems long ago when we were renting we always go        JK> the short end of the stick so to speak. Well, at least most times we        JK> get the security back but I do remember having to make a fuss with the        JK> landlord over it.              I have never had a problem getting my deposit back... I often think that they       gave it back to get rid of me. But, I usually move out of a place and it's in       much better condition than before I moved into it.              The ONLY exception was when I terminated a lease early and I even got that one       back after I took them to court. I had a nightmare of a neighbor across the       hall. Constant parties every night even on the weekdays and they would steal       my light bulbs I put in the porch light. I even went so far as to buy them a       box of light bulbs and gift wrap them. They would steal the light bulb and       from the porch light and the one in the hallway every time without fail.              The landlord was an "absentee" landlord and I reported this to him daily on       their answering machine. I came home from work (this was before I worked for       corrections I was an EMT then) to find Metro Narcotics raiding the building.       They had a warrant to search the entire premises and they ransacked my       apartment too. It was a duplex town home so we each had an upstairs and a       downstairs.              I came home, after work and grocery shopping, to find strand people going in       an out of my apartment only to be thrown to the ground, my groceries smashed I       don't know if you were here then but because I was the NC/NEC of 2320 the       net's echomail was down for two weeks as they ripped the computer apart even       searched in it's case. The hard drive was salvageable... Benny from SEC       Computers rebuilt it for me no charge.              All of my belongings were dumped on the floor and no care was taken to make       sure my poor kitty was secure. Thankfully the old lady across the street       rescued her. I moved that weekend as I did not feel safe there. I got no       apology from the landlord... the police did make things right as my furniture       was damaged, when I moved they did buy me new furniture and pay for the       damages they did. I never was so embarrassed or felt so violated. It was my       first apartment and I was so proud of it. I learned how to sue the crap out       of a landlord from this experience. I had to pay two months rent in advance       plus a damage deposit they tried to keep every penny. The police had some       sort of fund that helped me move (in exchanged for testimony in court) and       they had an attorney that helped me move. It was so bad they insisted I move       across town far from my parents as it would be unsafe for me to stay in that       area.              I also learned after that that a GOOD apartment that doesn't screw you over       pets is hard to find... and I never trusted anyone in apartments after that.       It got better after I became a correction's officer... which leads to another       nightmare story.              All was good until September 11, 2001. I was working day shift at the jail       downtown as a corrections officer and I picked up a 4 hour part time gig as an       EMT/Firefighter with PRP Fire department. (I had the trifecta of emergency       services as tone time I was a licensed EMT / Firefighter and Law Enforcement       officer... I actually carried 3 badges at same time) I had to drop my part       time job as so many people were called up to active duty with the reserves       that it caused manditory 12 hour shifts at the jail which every other night we       were manditoried an additional 4 hours because of critical staffing lows...       with 1 or 2 days off. And by the time I got a day off I was exhausted and       they were just figuring out then I had Lupus on top of everything else.              I had a crabby old man and woman who lived below me who complained about me       stomping around at 1am... they complained that I ran water excessively...       after working 16 hours at a jail the hot shower was the highlight of the       night. To stay fresh I had to change uniforms sometimes once or twice a shift       (inmates like to throw food and literally poop at you at times) so I would       come home and immediately do laundry you don't let that stuff sit.              I get a letter eventually from the apartment manager telling me to cease and       desist my "nighttime activities" not to "run water after 11pm" and blah blah       blah. This went on almost daily for weeks and the last straw was a letter       that threatened eviction.              I took that to work and thankfully at that time I served as the arraignment       court officer / bailiff to the judge and etc. Needless to say I showed the       letter to one of the county prosecutors who made a copy and gave it to his       wife (reputed to be one of the meanest attorneys in the state). She told me to       disregard and sent them a letter.              We were immediately served by the Apartment community's lawyer with an       eviction notice and a copy of my lease with the caption highlighted NO WASHING       CLOTHES IN THE COMMON AREAS DURING HOURS OF 9PM to 9AM. Where they messed up       was I paid an additional $50 a month for the "Deluxe" apartment with       washer/dryer hookups and a dishwasher.              Katherine, my attorney, said let it go to court... I had to show up to court       in my uniform as I took a break away from work to go (courthouse attached to       the jail thankfully no biggie) was in front of a judge all of ten minutes       after Katherine explained the overtime situation and etc and pointed out that       I had been harassed by neighbors below and I had no choice to my shift. The       nail in the coffin was when the judge ruled that if the washer was inside my       apartment it was not a common area and I was free to wash to my heart's       desire. I was awareded 3 months rent, my damage deposit and moving expenses.       I was given up to 45 days to move on top of that rent free and the two old       farts below me were given a no contact/harassment order with me.              That was in 2002 and I moved to the 800 building... that's when the Derby City       Livewire went down after continuous operation starting on an old Atari 800       first call taken April 1 1986 with a 300 baud modem and BBS Express.              The livewire resurfaced again when I bough my home in 2007 but due to a fire       it went down again in 2011 (you were my feed then) my health was failing and       that ordeal about killed me. I'm retired now and hopefully back for the long       haul now.              Now back on topic since 1986 I've had 12 wonderful kitties in and out of my       life and now having Jade, my jet black green eyed troublemaker and Annie, my       black and white dwarf kitty with me currently. I miss Tasha, Becky, Nannie,       Callie, Bubby, Mickey, Monica, Tess, Elvis and Priscilla.              I've always had two at any given time.              Allen              ... Buckle up; it makes it harder for the aliens to suck you out of the car.       --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5        * Origin: Derby City LiveWire - Louisville, KY - livewirebbs.dy (1:2320/100)    |
