Some software, such as Synchronet       will let you access netmail using an email client. Other software (e.g.       Mystic) will only let you access local messages via POP/SMTP.              I'm not aware of a way to a way to access echomail via POP/SMTP, but they can       be accessed on a lot of systems using NNTP with a newsreader. Both Synchronet       and Mystic support NNTP access, and other systems could use JAMNNTPD. On your       end, Thunderbird can be configured to access NNTP.                     ...
