   I don't think it was really a feature.  It was the standard technology that   
   allowed you to use a push-button phone, or a modem, on a phone line meant   
   for a rotary phone.   
      
   Touch-tone dialing was a "feature" that the phone company charged extra for,   
   at the time, until it became the default standard.
