Kurt,              KW>For a while I put the SIT tone in my outgoing message, that "boop boop BEEP"       KW>tone you hear before you hear "I'm sorry, the number you have reached has be       KW>disconnected or no longer in service"               Sort of like the tagline, telling that the 911 number is no longer in       service. That can happen at times, because of the loss of communication       lines.              KW>Quite a few predictive dialers use that sound to flag a number as non-valid        KW>take it out of their list.               Awhile back, I had the following recording on my answering machine.              Me: Hello, there is Daryl Stout.              [Sound Effect (ham mic key up)].              Glen Whatley (the ham radio operator who first spotted the F-5 tornado,       that hit Wichita Falls, Texas, on April 10, 1979) -- I edited out the       part of the Sax Center, noted below:              Anyone within the sound of my voice...there is a tornado on the ground       [near the Sax Center in Wichita Falls, Texas]. Please take cover.              [Sound Effect (tornado siren)].              Me: Unfortunately, this is the time of year in Arkansas...when severe       thunderstorms...producing heavy rain, high winds, large hail, flash       flooding, and tornadoes...can develop, and move into an area very       rapidly.              [Sound Effect (screaming hurricane winds)].              Me: Because of this, I'm currently gathering important weather data, and       can't come to the phone at this time. So, please your name, message, and       callback number after the tone. I'll get back with you as soon as I can.       Thank you.              [end of recording].               I'm not a meteorologist, but an amateur weather enthusiast. I know       enough to be dangerous...and "I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last       night!!" |
