   he is trying to use his provider as a smarthost but they require   
   authentication in the form of his username and password (at least)...   
      
   @rich, it might be easier to set up a local SMTP for relaying to your   
   provider... i do that here on my system for all our outbound email...   
   everything goes thru our internal postfix server which then decides which   
   servers to forward the mail to... if it is an ISP server, then it uses the   
   necessary authentication tokens for that server when it connects to drop off   
   that outbound mail... since this is an internal server with no access   
   available from the outside, it is (currently) configured for open access which   
   was done mainly because of us running software that does not have the ability   
   to authenticate to any smtp servers... this was a workaround for them which   
   has been expanded to handle all our outgoing email...
