   easy enough to do... one of my ubuntu servers ensures that various /var/log   
   directories are created when it boots and set the permissions needed for those   
   packages to write to them... in this case, it is binkd and synchronet that i'm   
   hosting for a friend... binkd has its own /var/log directory and they haven't   
   dug into sync so far that they desire to change its logging to also be in   
   /var/log/something... i think that was done in rc.local or some similar system   
   startup script...
