   Not all rocky planets have a molten core. Mars had   
   at one time but does not seem to now. The older   
   the planet the less likely it would have one. Of course   
   if it has an active magnetic field then it probably does.

   Lorien was hiding at the bottom of it. The Shadows either   
   had him imprisoned there or he was hiding from them in it.   
   The "city" would then either be the watch to keep him down   
   there or their base of operations in trying to reach him.   
   Are we ever told which one is the truth?
