I guess *all* comments about new shows this season should just be
understood to include the caveat "for a pilot", since we all know the
resulting series can be very different. So I basically enjoyed the
experience of watching the new "Five-O", meeting the updated versions
of the characters and going along for the ride. Yeah there were
clunky moments, but they were trying to cover so much groud in 40-odd
minutes, not to mention pleasing both fans of the old show and people
who think there really are cops called "5-0", that I'm willing to cut
   them some slack.
One reason I did may be because of the other major series launch I've
watched so far - "The Event". Another terrific cast, a much more
"high concept" premise, and a pilot that just annoyed the hell out of
me. Shaky-cam? "Five-O" was an oil painting compared to this mess.
and whoever told them "LOST jumped around in time and people liked it
   - make sure you jump around in time a lot" needs to be taken out and
shot. As should Quentin Tarrantino just on general principles. LOST
(like "Forever Knight" and "Highlander") generally told two parallel
stories - on set in the present time, one in the past, which
progressed alternately. They didn' jump around *randomly* within
their stories. I really don't think any of the drama of "The Event"
was actually enhanced by the skipping around - at least not to a
degree that compensated at all for the annoyance and confusion
   factors.
I'll still stick with this show for at least a couple of weeks,
because the premise does look interesting and the performers are
mostly very good (with the exception of the guy who looks like he's
going to be the main viewpoint character who is wirtten as whiney and
annoying to begin with and who is played by a graduate of the Nervous
   Tick school of acting.)
Anyway, it is quite possible that part of my appreciation for "Five-O"
comes from its being so *normal* after the assault of "The Event". I
really hope both shows improve with future episodes.
   Regards,
   Joe
