Now you see, I very much appreciated that bit of time travel
tomfoolery because it both cleared out the accumulated underbrush
*and* honored and connected to the original. It was a reboot that
found a way to maintain a connection to the existing continuity in a
very clever way. For that I was willing to forgive its being a time
travel story, even a "convenetional" one. (Whereas I will never
forgive them for the muddled mess of "Generations", where an arbitrary
ban on "normal" time travel in one of the few stories where it should
have been used robbed the story of all drama and significance.)
And I agree that "Yesterday's Enterprise" was the best of TNG. When I
first saw it, I called my best friend and said, "They just did their
'City on the Edge of Forever'." It was both the moment the new show
came of age in my eyes, and the moment when it peaked. It was never
quite that good again, although it did manage to hold very close to
that level of quality for several years, before inevitably over-
staying its welcome in the last couple of seasons. (It has long been
an axiom in TV that every series stays on the air one or two seasons
longer than it should. JMS knew this and avoided the problem by
having his end point and sticking to it.)
