   Yet another reason may be that you never know when opportunity will knock.    
   If you are in a supporting role, but you know the leads' lines, you can be    
   ready to step up if called upon.   
      
   OTOH, there are some supporting roles that are (IMO) more interesting than    
   that of the lead.  My personal favorite in film is that of Capt. Louis    
   Renault, who REALLY makes the film, and whom I find more entertaining than    
   Richard Blaine.  He certainly has all the best lines, even if Rick's are    
   more oft-quoted.
