   While both peas and peanuts are legumes (as are chickpeas, lentils,   
   and soybeans), they are botanically quite distinct and hardly   
   interchangable.  Legumes are generally divided into peas and beans -   
   peas are, obviously, in the peas group, while peanuts are on the bean   
   side of the family.   
   Peas generally do well in cool weather climates, grow on vines and   
   mature quickly - seed to harvest in 70 to 90 days depending on the   
   exact variety.  Beans need warmer weather, tend to grow on bushes and   
   usually take longer to mature - 85 to 115 days.   
   Peanuts no more "are" peas because both are legumes than you are a   
   chimpanzee because both are primates.  In each case there are obvious   
   differences.  Chimpanzees, for instance, seem to have a detectable   
   sense of humor.
