Film and stage actor Kevin McCarthy, perhaps best known for starring   
   in the original (and best) adaptation of "Invasion of the Body   
   Snatchers" died on Cape Cod on Saturday.  He was 96.

   1956 was a good year for influential, grown-up SF films, as it also   
   saw the release of "Forbidden Planet", discussed in another recent   
   thread on this group, and "The Creeping Unknown" (AKA "The Quatermas   
   Xperiment")  Whole categories of subsequent SF films and TV shows were   
   directly or indirectly influenced by these three.  A fourth release   
   from that year, the U.S. edit of "Godzilla", spawned yet another,   
   often more dubious line of SF-flavored projects
