   The ones we remember do.  And outside Trek & Wars... I can't remember   
   a recent space opera that did well, beside Avatar (if you count that)   
   and it was successful because of new effects (3D).   
   Chronicles of Riddick, Serenity were both in the "break even" zone,   
   give or take.

   SF horror more than Space Opera.  It had 1 alien, 1 dead planet, 1   
   derelict and 1 active spaceship and 7 cast members.  Space opera needs   
   many, many more of all those things.  That costs.

   And TV and movie franchises aren't guarantees of success.   
   Space opera is expensive and even then it can easily look cheap.
