But current book sales aren't exactly the way to measure the potential
audience for something like this. The "Lensmen" novels have been in
print for better than 50 years. I still have my old mass market
paperback editions that I bought in the late 60s. Lots of SF fans who
heard about the books ended up reading copies at their local library
because they couldn't find copies in bookstores when the titles were
   out of print.
"Lensmen" is one of the seminal works of SF. It has influenced
everything from "Star Wars" to "Babylon 5". Even people who have
never heard of it have seen works created by people who were "Lensman"
fans. Its DNA is in an awful lot of the stuff that's out there today,
much as Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" keeps peeking through
works like "V", "Independence Day" and "Skyline" As with "Star Wars"
I don't think a series of "Lensmen" films would have to depend on
people already being familiar with the property. Seeing a trailer for
a "Lensman" film would get people interested in that kind of thing
fired up, if only because of its resemblance to other films that are
actually derivative of *its* source material.
BTW, as a point of comparison, here are how some other classic novels
   - which have been repeatedly been put into development, or been
adapted for the big or small screen - are doing on Amazon:
"The Foundation Trilogy" Sales rank - 66,045
"Childhood's End" Sales rank - 14,855 (higher than I would have
expected. The current "V" series may be goosing sales.)
"I, Robot" (adapted - badly - not too long ago) 9,408
   "2001" 15,139
   "The Martian Chronicles" 22,005
"Stranger in a Strange Land" 6,500
   Regards,
