   Too rich and too lean are the new-age way that is used to keep them in   
   good shape for as long as they can still get a spark across the ever   
   widening plug gap...consider the rest of the sensors that keep the ECM   
   informed about how much air is passing through the throttle body, how much   
   Oxygen remains in the exhaust gases, etc.. All of that info is used by the   
   ECM to open the injectors and keep them open to regulate the air fuel   
   ratio to make the engine run at its best efficiency.
