"Hi Phil, maybe you can use this for your humor section of the newsletter. I
have a small piece of property but enjoy feeding the birds, especially in the
winter. Because I get so many different birds my yard has also become a place
for the local red tailed hawk to pay a visit when he is hungry. One day I
looked out the window just as the hawk landed on the branch of a tree in the
middle of my backyard. All of the birds who had been eating flew away when
the hawk arrived. I stood at my backdoor watching him as he sat very still in
the tree. A few minutes later a pair of unsuspecting mourning doves landed on
my patio, right in front of my back door. The hawk turned his head and zeroed
in on the two doves and I could tell that he was getting ready to pounce on
them. I put my hand on the door handle so I could open the door and try and
scare the doves before they became dinner for the hawk. In a split second the
hawk was flying right at the doves and I flew open the door to scare them.
There was a huge poof of feathers as the hawk swooped in and I screamed so
loud that my husband, who was in the other room, came running in with my
little dog following behind him. I had no idea if the hawk got the doves
until my dog started barking at something in my kitchen. And there they were
in the corner of my kitchen...both doves must have flown into my kitchen to
escape the hawk as I had opened the door. I never saw them because there were
so many feathers and it happened in an instant. Thankfully the hawk didn't
follow them inside too! Sheila D."
