   Last week Patrice asked:

"Hello. I collect vintage cookbooks and have thousands of recipes, but one
recipe eludes me. I grew up with extended family, and my great aunt used to
make chicken and rice for the family. I have tried to duplicate it, but that
flavor eludes me. She never followed a recipe sheet, but I have a feeling
that this is an old African American recipe that was passed down over the
years. Can anyone help? I will take all recipes. I grew up in the 70's in
Virginia. Thanks. -Patrice J. Richmond, VA "

Thank you Sherri D. for thie following note and recipe for Patrice:

Hi Phil, Don't know if this is the recipe that Patrice is looking for, but my
aunt Mae in Texas used to make this and she would be in her 90's:

   Chicken and Rice
4 chicken breast pieces or 6 thighs 1 cup white rice (uncooked)
   2 1/2 cups water
1 envelope Lipton onion soup mix
   1/4 cup butter
Melt the butter in a casserole dish big enough to hold the chicken in a single
layer. Spread the rice over the butter. Place the chicken over the rice.
Sprinkle the dry soup mix over the chicken and add the water. Cover and bake
at 350 for about 1 hour until rice is cooked- check under the chicken after 45
minutes. You won't need salt or pepper.

Sheila R. wrote in with this tip:

"I don't have a recipe for Patrice, but there is something I want to share. My
late aunt made excellent chicken with rice soup. No one else made soup that
could match it. Her trick was to add "a little" evaporated milk, not enough
to turn the dish into a cream soup, rather just enough to flavor and enrich
the broth without giving it the taste of evaporated milk."

   10. A vintage recipe request from a reader:

"Hello, I'm desperately looking for recipes that use the good old jello
pudding mix that you have to cook! Most of the available (Jello Pudding)
books for that call for instant, and according to the Kraft website, you
cannot substitute the cooked kind for the instant! I've "inherited" a bunch
of packages (mostly chocolate and lemon) and I'm at a loss to do any more than
just make pudding. Bet there are readers out there who have wonderful recipes
using this stuff! Thanks for any help.... Linda Harris
P.S. Still looking for that fruit cake recipe that is mostly nuts, dried
cherries, and citron with very little cake holding it together...."

As with collectibles, people also have very strong feelings about foods from
their past. Sometimes these special recipes get lost. This section is to
help people who are looking for lost recipes from their past. If you submit a
request, please include the geographical region where you tasted the recipe.

If you can help this reader with this recipe, (either recipe...the jello
recipe or the fruit cake recipe??) please forward it to phil@bignews.biz . If
you have a vintage recipe request send it to phil@bignews.biz and we might
   just publish it here.
