   IMHO there is nothing wrong with turning on the BFO on a 'AM' RX.   
      
   My first RX was a Hallicrafters S-38E, it had a switch to turn on a BFO   
   to listen to CW or SSB (if you could call the circuitry in the S-38E a BFO)   
   IIRC it was just a wire routed around some sections in the chassis that   
   got 'switched in'.   
      
   I read Your message a few days ago and just got around to answering it.   
      
   After I read it I thought about the WRR-2 RX I listened on while the   
   ship was docked in Japan, I heard a K6 on it.
