Greetings Ed!               RW>>> This kind of antenna experimenting is what brought me to        RW>>> Amateur Radio in 1970...now that I could work VHF and UHF, the        RW>>> antennas I built were much easier to handle...               EV>> Another antenna I had 'thought' about almost 50 years ago, but never        EV>> made was the 6 Meter Corner Reflector mounted horizontally.        EV>> I thought it looked real neat, but even if I used Hardware Cloth for        EV>> the reflector element it would probably get Blown Down in a Storm as        EV>> big as that thing would be if I made it for 50.7 Mc/s.               RW>> You don't have to use hardware cloth to accomplish that. My        RW>> corner reflector yagi for HDTV is made of tubing. At 6mtrs, it        RW>> would be half the size of one for 10/11mtrs.               EV> You're right, I have seen photos of corner reflector antennas built        EV> using Rods for the reflector.              8^) I have one on my rooftop tower. My bowtie antenna also uses rods to       make up the reflector.               EV> If I ever wanted to use 6 Meters AM again, I have that 5 element,        EV> Beta Matched Beam still in the box, so I wouldn't need to build a        EV> Corner Reflector for 6.              But you could, if you had an inclination to do so.               EV> I don't use the Heathkit Sixer anymore because of learning my        EV> neighbor's TV Set was receiving the Audio and I don't want to cause        EV> them any inconveience(sp?) when they are watching a show on their        EV> set. When I watch TV (whenever) I wouldn't want any outside        EV> interference overriding the Video or Audio.              Ummm. If he's using an HDTV these days, your sixer wouldn't interfere with       his TV. There's a big difference between an analog signal and a digital       signal. Most likely, your sixer's signals mixed with his old tv's       frequency multipliers or mixers.               EV> I know that neighbor wouldn't write the FCC about MY 6 Meter Signal        EV> being received on his TV Set, but another neighbor may not be so kind        EV> and understanding and I get a Pink Slip from the Friendly Country        EV> Cousin that limited my 6 Meter operating hours. .... ..              When I was a youngster in the 50s, we had a ham that lived two houses up       and across the street from us. His xmitter interfered with our TV       reception and my parents complained to him about it. He didn't xmit during       primetime TV and everybody was happy. I don't think my dad knew that if he       complained to the FCC, they'd put a stop to his interfering, but I know my       dad never complained to the FCC.               EV>> I saw a HF Discone Antenna was used on all four of the AirCraft        EV>> Carriers I served on while I was in the U.S. Navy, and also being        EV>> told it was a BROADBAND Antenna that was used to Transmit on a range        EV>> of frequencies from (IIRC) 4-30 Mc/s (using an Antenna        EV>> Coupler/Tuner) really made me drool over wanting one of those        EV>> MONSTER Vertical polarized antennas.               RW>> Which reminds me of connecting the coaxial output of a CB radio        RW>> to the tower of an abandoned radio station tower.               EV> When I used my cars AM Radio Antenna with my Sixer, once I was some        EV> distance away from another Ham's station that I usually talked with.        EV> So I drove down the road from where I was to a Volunteer Fire        EV> Department building that had a Rohm Tower along side the building for        EV> their VHF Station, and by moving my car backwards and forwards I        EV> could find a spot where my friends signal increased, and it worked        EV> the other way too, he could hear my Five Watter also.              That was a pretty smart thing to do...we made the mistake of using 'jumper       cables' to attach the 108" SS whip antenna to the tower. It worked, but we       never thought about using the tower to 'point' the signal...               EV>> I 'Think' I recall that several Transmitters on different        EV>> frequencies could be connected to the Discone (through Antenna        EV>> Tuners) and used at the same time.               RW>> That's how a repeater works. It uses tuned cavities to allow        RW>> the xmitter to use the same antenna as the receiver w/out        RW>> interferring with each other.               EV> The Navy Air Craft Carrier I was on used the Discone just for HF        EV> Transmitting, and they used seperate Vertical Antennas for Receiving        EV> HF.              I'll bet that they still needed tuned cavities to use those antennas,       unless they shut down the receivers during xmit.               EV> -snip-               RW>>> And you guys thought CB'ers were nothing but skip talking        RW>>> truckers and hillbillies...               EV> I have met some CB'ers who didn't fit the Mode that the Movies and TV        EV> Shows.              I have too.               EV> And then there was a person who had both a Citizens Band Call for        EV> his self and a 27 MC/S Business Band Call for his business, who would        EV> sometimes use the Business Band RF Amp when he talked on the Citizens        EV> Band Frequencies (Channels).              I don't recall there being a business band on 27MHz...               EV> Also I remember one day a pleasure boat came through the Lock where I        EV> work, and I thought what I saw on the Dashboard in his boat was a HF        EV> Marine Band Radio, and the boat owner told me it was a CB Amplifier.              8^)               EV> I mentioned to him something about "that's illegal to use isn't it?",        EV> and he said he had to use it because his using CB on the River cut        EV> the signal level down. I didn't let him know that I KNEW RF travels        EV> better over Water than it does over Land. The next day that boat came        EV> back upriver through the Lock on my shift, and I didn't see any trace        EV> of a Radio or Amplifier in his Pilot House.               EV> I guess I put the fear in him.              I think so. 8^)               EV> -snip-               EV>> I waited to reply to your last comment until I thought what to write        EV>> Anyone else transmitting on a frequency not authorized by the FCC,        EV>> AND/OR Transmitting with a Power Level above 5 Watts is a        EV>> BOOTLEGGER!               RW>> An unlicensed radio operator.               EV> Every Ham I knew back when I got my Novice license called them        EV> BOOTLEGGERS!, that's why I used that term, maybe 6 Land and 5 Land        EV> Hams have different feeling about that than 4 Land and 9 Land Hams.              Well, in those days most hams thought that the FCC screwed them by giving       their 11mtr band away for a citizen's radio service. Thus the name,       bootlegger...               RW>>> Anybody interested in building UHF stacked Quagi's, let me        RW>>> know..               EV>> That sounds like stacked Quads, is that what a Quagi is?               RW>> No. A Quagi is a yagi with quad-loop driven and reflector        RW>> elements.               EV> Thanks, I know what a 2 element Quad is, I never heard the term Quagi        EV> since I don't keep up to date with what's going on in Ham Radio,        EV> except for what I read on the BBS Networks my SYSOP subscribes to        EV> that have Ham Echoes.              That antenna came up as a project in 73 Magazine c1970s. I built a pair of       them using 1/2" PVC booms, #12 house wire for the yagi elements and the       same type of wire for the loops. I pushed them up to a height of 40 feet       or so and worked the repeaters behind a ridge that blocked an antenna's       line-of-sight to the mountain-top where a UHF ham repeater was located.               EV> I think I've only seen one Amateur Radio 20 Meter two element Quad        EV> Antenna and it was made with Bamboo Poles.              That was probably the best material to use. I tried to make one out of PVC       pipe for 10Mtrs, but the plastic just wasn' up to the task, bending any       which way it could.               RW>> PS - I'm the E-listed moderator of this echo and anything        RW>> 'radio' is on topic in any of my echoes.               EV> Thanks, I 'thought' that You might be the Moderator of this echo.              I don't advertise it for good reason. I'd rather talk radio than kick       someone in the pants for not following the rules.               EV> I just had the notion Amateur (or Ham) echoes didn't cater to that        EV> CB Stuff on a regular basis.              My attitude is that if it relates to radio, then it is on-topic.              My reasoning for that comes from an experience I had with the former       moderator of HAM, which I also moderate now. If CB came up in a       conversation, he'd jump on your case for mentioning it and give you a       warning; one more time and you're out of here. I fought him head to head       until he banned me from the HAM echo and I retaliated by creating another       HAM echo. That fight boiled over into other echoes that we both       frequented. Long story short: his girlfriend (whom he had been beating)       gave me the password to the echolisting and I used that to take the echo       away from him. He exited Fidonet soon thereafter.               EV> Sorry I was wrong, I'll watch what I type in This echo, if I can        EV> remember not to say any discouraging words about NON-CB Operators        EV> who use their TOYS for their own enjoyment, until they get caught.              Say what you want...we've been off-topic just in discussing TV antennas       and I won't object to that because it also includes topical things related       to radio. And it keeps the echo alive, which is also very important.               EV> CB Operators abide by the Rules as Amateur Radio Operators abide by        EV> the Rules, ANYONE who doesn't abide by the Rules is a BOOTLEGGER!!!!        EV> !!              8^)               Have a day!               R\%/itt - K5RXT              --- GoldED+/W32 1.1.5-31012       --- D'Bridge 3.99        * Origin: HAM Radio, aka Amateur Radio. 804?
