In a message dated 04-15-14, Tom Walker said to Holger Granholm:              Hi AGN Tom,              Agreed that you can make a 1:4 balun by using a 1/2 wavelength coax to       both transform a higher impedance feedpoint to the coaxial feeder AND to       balance the unsymmetric coax feeder to a balanced feedpoint.              But this chat of cutting/adding lengths of coax to a feedline to find a       point where the SWR is low doesn't lead anywhere. As I stated the same       bad SWR still exists along the length of the coax feedline.              PS. I did forget to mention the BAZOOKA which consists of a 1/4 w/l tube       sleeve over the top end of the coax feeder or a 1/4 w/l tube same dia-       meter as the coax. In both cases the 1/4 w/l is connected to the braid       of the coax but the open end of the tube sleeve is connected nowhere       whereas the top end of the parallel 1/4 w/l tubing is connected to the       other side of the split fed element.              In both cases you'll get a balanced feed from an unbalanced coax feeder.              If you want to change the feed impedance of the antenna you can either       shorten or lengthen the fed element beyond resonance but will then have       to deal with the inductive or capacitive reactance that will result.              Balancing coax fed driven elements has also become very much simpler       with the advent of toroidal cores as well as transforming impedances.              The simplest way to match a dipole antenna used as a driver on a yagi       without having to cut the dipole at the center is of course the gamma       match.              CU L8ER, Sam, OH0NC              aka Holger              ---        þ MR/2 2.30 þ OS/2 ...
