   Greetings TOM!

RW> TW>> BUT it CAN be done.

RW>> I know that it can be done, but doing so is a waste of time.

RW> TW>> And while the point may be arguable I suspect that WHEN YOU find
RW> TW>> the Perfect length it would be less loss than THE BALUN

RW>> Loss? The perfect match will have no loss to speak of. This is why
RW>> antennas are tuned with a balun or a gamma match, or as Ed says,
    RW>> Beta matched.

TW> Well even though the Balan Losses are measureed in tenths of a DB the
TW> loss of the old single band half wavelength "Coax Balun" is even
    TW> less!!!

The question isn't about loss, it's about matching an antenna to its feed.
Your xmitter is tuned to match the 50Ohm coax, but the antenna isn't
resonant until it is matched with coax lengths in any length. Once you get
the antenna tuned, you will only have losses in your coax, no matter how
   long or short it is.

TW> By the wat there is a very intersting article in the May QST about a
TW> Sleeve Antenna. They use an actual metal sleeve though.
TW> And to make the project easier do use a Balun!!

Of course. They know why you should match an antenna load to 50ohm.

       Have a day!
