   1967-1971 The first Lock and Dam I worked at was on the   
   Right Descending Bank of the Ohio River.   
      
   Over on the Left Descending Bank, about 1/4 Mile downriver Fort Knox   
   (Kentucky) had a Boat Ramp where they would drive a Submersible Vehicle   
   which had a long Cylindrical Tube (Pipe) on top of it into the river.   
      
   The river was around 1300' wide, Shore to Shore and about 10' deep.   
      
   The Tube stayed above the Water Line and I could see a Soldier at the   
   top of the tube while it moved part way across the river.   
      
   IIRC the Lock was at Mile 633.3 Downstream of Pittsburgh, PA on   
   the Ohio River, 26 River Miles below Louisville, KY.   
      
   What I saw was probably what you got to ride in while in the Navy.   
   Am I close???
