some of you may remember my saying something about my old allfix 5.13       universal having problems scanning my frontdoor netmail area while frontdoor       was running... this resulted in allfix giving me that old "abort, retry,       ignore" prompt... some time back, out of frustration, i moved my allfix       tossing to my midnight maint and since frontdoor was already down at that       point, there would be no conflict... now, i should note that this was all the       DOS side of things on my OS/2 Warp 3 Connect box... DOS frontdoor and running       allfix 5.13 universal from a DOS command prompt...              that's the background... here's a little update on recent happenings... a few       weeks ago my system took an EMP burst which blew my USR Courier and locked up       the machine... a reboot brought the machine back but it was very dazed and       confused... an eight day battle ensued and i was able to clone the drives and       get everything running again under OS/2 eCS 2.1 (or 2.5?)... we went from a       PII 300mhz 112Meg RAM box to a PIII 800mhz 384Meg RAM box... but whoa, all of       the allfix universal apps froze the system solid when run from a DOS prompt...       i mean a hard lock... no keyboard, no nothing... big red switch time...              so after skipping all new files processing for a few days while i thought       about things, i decided to try running my allfix universal from the OS/2 side       of the fence... lo and behold, it ran! excellent... so we fixed up the script       files so the DOS maint task started the OS/2 side scripts to run allfix and       friends... everything has been good...              now, today, i'm looking at my ticbad area like i generally do and get it       cleaned up so i can try to toss these new files that failed for some reason       before... i wasn't even thinking and typed in my tic-in script command on the       DOS side and everything ran like it was supposed to do... allfix tools on the       OS/2 side and everything else over here on the DOS side... oh but wait! i       didn't freeze frontdoor first! i waited for that dreaded beep and the sight of       that old "abort, retry, ignore" prompt but it never came... the OS/2 side of       allfix universal didn't lock and complain when it ran thru the netmail area       while frontdoor was still running... nice! that's the way it used to be so       long ago... or it was supposed to be, anyway... so now i've gone into my       midnight maint scripts and blocked out the processing in there... then i       unblocked the tic processing in my inbound mail processing script... now let's       see if we can go back to processing the files as they come in instead of       waiting until mignight and risking multiple hatches of the same file leading       to multiple tics for the same file and thus more manual work to be done in the       ticbad area...              it looks like i should have maybe been using the OS/2 side of allfix universal       a long time ago... i just wanted to share this little story of winning battles       and gaining successes over time :)              )\/(ark               * Origin: (1:3634/12)    |
