Is the clipper chip a sick joke? Unfortunately, the goverment is serious
about this thing. Fortunately the EFF issued a statement blasting the news
the same day it was announced. I hope that they will be vigorous in
protesting this sort of system. On the other hand, at least for now
other "real" crypto is still legal. The danger of course is if the
clipper chip catches on, they will try to make other systems illegal
in the interests of "Protecting Americans". And do you really think
that any foreign countries will want to use this system knowing that
the US has all the keys. Think of the implications this has for the
world power balance! Now for the REALLY SICK part of this big joke.
The keys are only 80 bits long! I seem to remember just a few weeks
back someone was ridiculing our beloved future culture list-manager for
having "only" a wimpy 384-bit PGP public key. My hope is that everyone
sees that this system has major flaws and just don't use it. I
sure am not going to use it!
