Hello, all.
I've just finished the first part of my second ST:TNG story, "Resistance".
The next parts will follow soon.

If you have missed the first one, "To Boldly Go...", you can get it from
some ftp-sites that keep all stories posted to alt.startrek.creative, or
you can get it directly from me at BERO@Flash.gun.de

Note for the Trek historians: This story takes part after the crew's
time-off at star base 141 in "To Boldly Go...".

Once again, any comments (even one-line comments like "give up - it's
horrible!" or "great story!") would be greatly appreciated. Post them
either to this board or e-mail them to me.
(_negative_ comments only per e-mail, please ;) )
(my e-mail address is BERO@Flash.gun.de)

Permission is granted to copy, post, parodize (challenge!), archive,
or whatever, the story as many times as you like as long as the copyright
notice is not removed.

I know that parts of the story could be improved a lot - if somebody does,
please send me your "corrected" version (This also applies to persons who
correct my spelling mistakes; I think my ortho.. err... ortograf ... err...
orthography... ortographic... (aw, skip it!) is not quite as good as it
should be. ;)

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1994/1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer.

Chapter One

"Captain's log, star date 48043.9. Star base 141 has just finished its
repairs and refits on the Enterprise. Since the plans to add a new weapon
to Galaxy class starships have been canceled when we found out that the Borg
are no longer a threat, there are no major upgrades to the ship.
Since most crew members are still on the star base's recreational areas, the
Enterprise won't depart before star date 48050.0."

Picard finished the official log entry, having just finished his last
inspection of the repaired parts of his ship. He was quite satisfied with the
repair team's efficiency. They had not only finished repairs on the ship two
days before the Enterprise was scheduled to leave, they had also
re-programmed the ship's universal translator to understand the new
Romulan code.

Since there was nothing left to do for Picard, he left for his ready room,
ordered a cup of Earl Grey tea from the food synthesizer and sat down
behind his desk, opening one of his favorite old books.

In the meantime, his first officer was in the ship's holodeck, enjoying a
re-creation of a jazz band, playing the trombone, talking to holographic
guests, and dancing.

Worf was in the middle of a strategema game with the star base's security
chief.
Data had decided to work with the star base's computers, accessing all new
information gathered by Federation scientists - a normal recreation time for
all the ship's crew members, after all.

Few days later, when all crew members had returned to duty, Picard made his
next log entry.

Chapter Two

"Captain's log, star date 48050.0. With all crew members back on duty, we are
departing from star base 141. We have been ordered to transport some
dilithium crystals to the research lab on Ragat IV, where the
scientists are working on a more efficient warp propulsion system."

"The star base has cleared us for departure, Captain." Ensign Seron, the
Vulcan ship's navigator, said.

"Set course, half impulse. Accellerate to warp 5 as soon as we're out of
here."
"Half impulse, aye, Sir."
The Enterprise left the star base, increasing speed to warp 5 after having
cleared the star base.

"It will be intreaguing to see the Ragat IV research lab. Dr. Bero's theories
on improved warp-propulsion, are very interesting." Data said.
"It will be very interesting to see the Ragat IV labs. I've always hoped I'd
meet Dr. Bero some day. His solution to the Cochrane equation was one of the
biggest advances in warp technology in the last 25 years." LaForge added.
"Sure it is. And his theories on exceeding warp 10 are ..."
"Exceeding warp 10? I thought that was impossible!" Riker said.
"According to the current theories, it is impossible. But, long time ago,
people thought that the speed of sound could not be exceeded, and
after that theory proven to be wrong, they believed that light speed was the
maximum possible speed. Our current belief is that warp 10 is the highest
possible speed, but we can't be that sure." Seron tried to help.

"We are receiving a distress call from the unexplored Epsilon Theta sector!"
Worf interrupted the discussion.
"On screen."

An image showing a Borg appeared on the main viewer. "This is Hugh of Borg.
We are under attack. The ..." The picture was replaced with static, and the
voice became ununderstandable. "Mr. Worf, can you improve the message?"
"Negative, Sir. I think the sender was hit by an energy weapon."
"How far to Epsilon Theta?"
"35 parsecs. At warp 8, we can be there in 22.4 minutes." Seron said.
"Any other ships in range?"
"Negative, Sir."

"Then Ragat IV will have to wait. Send a message to the lab, explaining them
our delay. Set course for Epsilon Theta, warp 8."
Seron acknowledged the Captain's order and typed it into the computer.
"We are receiving another distress call from Epsilon Theta, Sir."
"On screen."

"It is audio only. Putting it to the speakers."
Due to the static interference, the voice was only hardly understandable.
"This is Hugh of Borg. We are under attack by ... (crackle) collect ... They
have decided to re-crea ... just in time ... move ... assimi ... Any
starship in range, plea ... help us."

"Open a channel."
"Channel open."
"This is Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise. We are responding
to your distress call. Please tell us what's going on."
The Enterprise didn't get a response. Seron suggested that the Borg could not
receive the message due to the damage in the mentioned attack.
"Increase speed to warp 9."

The Enterprise accellerated to warp 9. Some crew members' hope for an
uneventful travel was destroyed, while Worf was looking forward to having a
battle.

part, you can obtain it from BERO@Flash.gun.de

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Three

"Captain's log, supplemental. We have interrupted out mission to transport
dilithium crystals to the Ragat IV research lab in order to follow a distress
call from the Borg Hugh, originating in the unexplored Epsilon Theta
sector."
Picard ended his log entry.

"Mr. Worf, whatever it is that attacked them, we must be cautious. Go to
yellow alert and raise the shields. Prepare to activate phasers and
photon torpedoes."
"Aye, Sir."

The Enterprise speeded towards the Epsilon Theta sector at warp 9, scanning
the area closely.
"The third planet of the Epsilon Theta system is class M. Probably that is
where Hugh's distress call came from." Data said.
Picard ordered to set a course for the planet and reduce the speed to full
impulse.

"Captain, an unknown ship is approaching from the other side of the sector!"
"On screen."
Ensign Seron pushed a button at his console. A large, cube-shaped ship
appeared on the screen.
"Hail them."

"Not necessary, Captain. They are hailing us."
Picard stood up and straightened his uniform. "On screen".
The inside of the cube ship appeared on the viewscreen. A metallic voice said
"We are Borg. Resistance is futile. Surrender or we will destroy your ship.
You have 10 minutes."

"Wait ..."
"They have closed the frequency, Captain." Worf said.
Picard pushed a button. Red alert sirens shrieked throughout the ship.

Chapter Four

"Opinions?"
"This surely resembles the Borg collective we got to know. I wonder if Hugh's
distress call was a trap for us." Riker proposed.

"I do not think the Borg would set up traps, Commander. It would oppose all
known strategies the Borg have used so far." Data countered.
"I don't know, Mr. Data. They are individuals by now. An individual Borg would
react differently than a collective Borg." Picard proposed.

"There was another detail that may be significant, Captain. While Hugh's voice
sounded like a normal human voice, the ship's voice was metallic, like the one
the Borg used when they were still the collective." Data added.
"That may be important, Captain. Maybe only the Borg ships in our vicinity
were affected by the thought of individuality, and when the other Borg lost
contact with our Borg, they came here to investigate. This ship may be a
collective Borg ship." Seron said.

"It's my fault. We should have further investigated the Borg ship when they
were about to destroy earth. Maybe we would have found out enough about
their communications system to know if this is true or not."
Riker said.

"Your choice was the right one, Number One. Just imagine the Borg noticing
their mistake and restoring their crew to active status. The Federation would
have been lost." Picard tried to calm down his first officer, "And, besides,
we have more actual events to discuss."

"Collective or not, I recommend we attack them. If we leave the first shot to
them, it would be an advantage for them." Worf suggested.
"I think we must find out more. Open a channel."

Worf nodded at the Captain, telling him the channel was open.
"Borg ship, this is Captain Picard of the Enterprise. What will happen if we
surrender to you?"
"Talk is irrelevant. Resistance is futile. Your life, as it has been, is
over. You will be assimilated."

Worf notified Picard that the Borg had closed the frequency, again.
"Now we have our proof - they're the collective. Not all their ships have
been affected."

"Maybe the Federation should have been less proud on its victory over the
Borg. We should have been prepared for this. After the massacre at Wolf 359,
I don't believe the Enterprise can survive a battle with the Borg.
I think we should have all non-necessary personnel and all families abandon
the ship. Send them to the class M planet in the system. Mr. Data, how many
time is left?" Picard said.

"We have exactly 7 minutes and 34 seconds left before the Borg attack."
"Then we will have to use all transporters and shuttles. Counsellor Troi,
you will take care of the evacuation."
Counsellor Troi left the bridge to arrange evacuation.

"All off-duty personnel, all family members, abandon the ship.
This is not a drill.
I repeat, abandon the ship. People on decks one to four, report to transporter
room two. Decks five to seven, report to cargo bay two. Sick Bay report to
shuttle bay one." The computer announced.
Picard's communicator came to life. "Crusher to Picard."

"Go ahead, doctor."
"I will stay aboard the ship."
"No. We do not require medical assistance here. You will leave the ship."
"But someone may be injured when we try to fight the Borg."
"Your patients are on the planet, Doctor. And, they need someone to stay in
control of the situation. I'm putting you in charge."
"Aye, Sir."

Picard sighed, convinced that his decision to save Dr. Crusher's life against
her will was the right one.
"The ship has been evacuated." The computer announced.
"Officers remaining aboard: Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William T.
Riker, Lt. Commander Data, Chief Engineer Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge,
Lieutenant Worf, Ensign Seron, Security teams one and two, Engineering crew
one."
Hoping the others would survive, Picard ordered "Mr. Data, activate automatic
shield and phaser frequency modulation. Mr. Worf, fire."

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Five

Worf fired all phasers at the Borg ship, hoping they would be unprepared for
an early attack.

"The Borg ship shows is undamaged, Sir. They are locking a tractor beam on to
us." Data announced.
Once again, the Borg ship appeared on the main viewer. "We are Borg. You are
technically inferior to our ship. Your resistance is futile. Surrender or we
will destroy your ship."

"Have you opened that channel, Mr. Worf?"
"No, Sir. It has been activated automatically."
"So the Borg are controlling the ship's computer?"
"It seems so."
"Have the computer access all information on paradoxons. Maybe we can make
the Borg concentrate on something else."
"Aye, Sir."

Data requested all paradoxons from the ship's library, including the three-
dimensional figure they had invented to destroy the Borg operating system
when they first met an individual Borg.
Shortly after, the tractor beam was released.

"There seems to be no chance fighting them, but maybe we can trick them. Do
you remember that informations Starfleet send to all ships, concerning the
wormhole at Bajor?"
"Yes, but what has that to do with the current situation?"
"The creators of the wormhole have granted us free use of their wormhole, but
not the Borg. Mabe they can tell the Borg apart from us, and maybe they can
solve this situation.

Like us, the Borg work in linear time. They will be confused by the
inhabitants of the wormhole - if they come in contact."
"And if they do not, they would possibly find the Jem'Hadar. A
battle between the Borg and the Jem'Hadar could solve two of the Federation's
problems at the same time. It's surely worth a try."

"Mr. Data, how long will it take us to Bajor at warp 9.9?"
"We can be there in 9 days, 1 hour and 4 minutes."

"Set a course for the Bajoran wormhole, maximum speed. Engage."
"Wait, Captain. What if the Borg use the wormhole for their
advantage? We don't know exactly where the Borg come from. Possibly,
they are from the Gamma quadrant. If they are, showing them the wormhole
would be showing them a short cut to Federation territory. We would be
competely helpless, then."
Ensign Seron objected.

Chapter Six

The final shuttle had just landed on the class M planet. Dr. Crusher assembled
the evacuated people and helped Counsellor Troi inform them of the
information. Some of them were under shock, so there was plenty of work for
her to do.

Lieutenant Talas, a security officer who had been evacuated, proposed to find
a place for the evacuated Federation people. "The Borg may come to the planet
if they find out most parts of the ship have been evacuated. We should find a
safer place than here."

Dr. Crusher understood the security guard's concerns, and was glad about
everyone who had something to do. People who have a job to do have less time
to waste on disturbing others.

"It's a good idea, Lieutenant. Take all qualified people who are not under
shock.
Split up in groups of five crew people to look for a good place for us. Report back
here in an hour so we can discuss your findings."

Dr. Crusher continued treating her patients - the ones that had been evacuated
from sick bay as well as the ones who were just under shock because of the
situation.

Especially the children that were on board the Enterprise with their parents
made some problems for her. Some of them were crying for their parents who
had remained aboard the ship, while others were running around and playing.
The exploration teams finished their discussions on the best area to start a
search.

Lieutenant Talas led a group of five security officers. They had been told
to go to a mountain near the landing site to look for possible caves and
sensor-blocking materials in the rocks.

It would have been an easy duty under normal circumstances, but in the
current situation, their only pieces of equipment were a standard issue
survival pack and a phaser. Without the appropriate sensor devices to
scan for safe places, that kind of duty is quite a hard job.

The way to the mountain was quite uneventful, though somewhat funny. Talas
had always liked to tease Vulcans about their pointed ears, which resembled
donkey ears, in his opinion, and Ensign t'Pal being on his team was an ideal
point of time for his little hobby.

It was t'Pal who first discovered the entrance to a cave in the mountain. Her
excellent Vulcan ears heard the dripping of water, and that led the team to
the cave.

They went into the cave to see how many crew members could hide in there,
and to analyze the components of the rocks to see if they screened them from
sensors.

It was quite a large cave. Talas estimated that the entire crew of the
Enterprise could hide in there. When all five officers were envolved in
analyzing the rocks, suddenly, they were disturbed by the sound of footsteps,
emerging from right behind them.

Talas turned around to see a Borg.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Seven

The bridge crew was startled by Seron's warning about the Bajoran wormhole
being a possible short cut for the Borg. No one else had thought of that
possibility.

"Well, what course of action would you suggest, Ensign? We must make our
decision before the Borg stop accessing our computer's informations, and
before they find out that all the paradoxons are irrelevant."

"I don't know, Sir."
"I recommend to fire all weapons at them. While they are concentrated on
solving our problems, they are maybe not diverting too much power to their
shielding." Worf proposed.

"But they would be disturbed, and they would stop concentrating on our little
puzzles, Mr. Worf. That's too dangerous." Picard objected.
"Have the Borg been in contact with Klingons or Romulans before, Captain?"
Seron asked.

"I don't think so. At least, the Federation has no information on such
encounters. Why so you ask?"
"If they have not, they probably have never seen a cloaking device. If we
could get a cloaking device from the Klingons or Romulans, we could
possibly trick them."

"Interesting theory, Ensign. Mr. Data, how long would it take us to the
Klingon neutral zone?"
"Approximately 8 weeks, 2 days and 3 hours, Sir. If we set the direct course,
which passes most of the Federation's major worlds."
"That's too long. We wouldn't survive that. How long to the Romulan Neutral
zone?"
"It is not far from here. We can be there in 4 hours and 3 minutes."

"Then we'll have to try it. Mr. Data, set a course for the Romulan Neutral
Zone. Send a message to the Romulans telling them that we come in peace and
we need their assistance to fight a common enemy that could defeat both our
civilizations.
Ensign Seron, Warp 8. Engage."

Chapter Eight

T'Pal, who was farther inside the cave and possibly not detected by the Borg,
drew her phaser and aimed it at the Borg. Maybe they would be able to take out
the first few Borg.

The Borg started speaking to the crem members. "I am Hugh of Borg. I'm glad
that, finally, someone has responded to our distress call. Are you aware of
the Borg collective?"

"Wait" t'Pal thought. "This does not sound like the Borg we have been informed
about. I think I shall not fire my phaser until we know more."
She moved to get in a better place to fire if necessary.
"We are aware of the Borg collective. Listen, we don't want to be assimilated.
I'd rather die than..."

"Nor would I. Some time ago, the Borg were told what life as individual beings
was like. The links between all of us were cut off, and we continued to exist
as inividuals.

You can imagine that the new form of existance led to a chaos in the whole
Borg.
We were not used to operating on an individual basis. New problems were found
every day. We could not be as perfect as we were, before.

That's why some of us decided that the disadvantages of individuality outweigh
its advantages. These people have re-established all the links, and they are
trying to give the better form of existance to all life in the galaxy. A small
group of us was able to remove the computer parts responsible for the link
fast enough to prevent from being made part of the Borg collective, again."
"This surely sounds interesting. Please wait. I'll inform my ship."

Talas tapped his communicator.
"Talas to Enterprise."
After a while without a reply, he tried again.
"Talas to Enterprise."
Again, nothing.

"I'm sorry. They must have destroyed your ship." Hugh said.
The crew members were shocked by the new discovery. Ensign Kyle started
crying. His wife had been one of the security people staying aboard.
"Talas to Crusher."
"Crusher here."
"I'm afraid we have bad news..."

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Nine

Dr. Crusher was shocked about the news form Lieutenant Talas.
Hoping there would be survivors, she tapped her communicator.

"Crusher to Picard. Come in."
No response.
"Crusher to Riker. Please respond!"
No reply.
"Crusher to Data."
No answer.

She started believing that the Borg had completely destroyed the Enterprise -
and killed all remaining crew members. The loss of the ship was bad enough -
but the loss of the lives of her closest friends...

She could barely remain control. She told the others to go to the cave Talas
and his team had found. She had to take care of the survival of the
evacuated crew members and their families. If there was a solution to the
situation, then the individual Borg would know it.

Chapter Ten

The Enterprise speeded towards the Romulan Neutral Zone,
expanding the distance between them and the Borg ship. Worf had
sent the distress call to the Romulans several times - but
without getting a response.
Picard told him to keep trying.

When the Enterprise was not too far away from the Neutral Zone,
Seron detected a change in the sensor readings.

"Captain," he said, "the Borg are following us."
"Increase speed to warp 9.9. Inform the Romulans of the change."
"Aye, Sir."

The Enterprise increased its speed to maximum, but the Borg ship was faster.
The Enterprise entered the Neutral Zone.

"Romulan Warbird is decloaking, Captain. They are hailing us."
"On screen."

"Welcome, Enterprise." The Romulan Commander said. "We have
received your distress calls, and did not respond because we
don't want the Borg to know our coordinates. We are prepared to
help you. If you lower your shields, we will beam two of our
engineers over to your ship so they can install one of our
cloaking devices. And, in addition, we will follow you and help
you fight the Borg."

"Thank you for your willingness to cooperate, Commander. Mr.
Worf, lower the shields."

Though Worf thought the Romulans were trying to deceive the
Enterprise crew, he followed Picard's orders. He, too, saw no
other chance to win the battle against the Borg.

He expressed his doubts. "Captain, I do not believe the
Romulans want to help us. They must be trying to trick us. They
would never give their cloaking devices to an enemy."

"Maybe they would, Mr. Worf. They have intercepted our messages
about the Borg encounter at Wolf 359, and they know how
powerful the Borg are. Maybe they are not willing to establish
peace with us, but they are willing to keep the Borg out of
their territory at any cost.
And, they have an opportunity for two of their engineers to see
the latest Federation technology."

Riker left the bridge to receive the engineers. They went to
work immediately. With Geordie's help, they redirected power
from the main energy source to the cloaking device.

"The Borg ship is coming in visual range!" Worf announced.
Picard tapped his communicator. "Mr. LaForge, are you ready?"

"Not yet, Sir. We need more power for the graviton-
neutralizator in the ..."

"No time for technical explanations now, Mr. LaForge. How long
will it take you?"

"We should be ready in ten minutes."

"Then we'll have to keep the Borg occupied for that period of
time. Inform the Romulans of our situation."

Worf submitted the information to the Romulans. The Enterprise
accelerated to Warp 9, trying to expand the distance between
them and the Borg ship until the cloaking device was ready.

The Romulan Warbird set a course directly for the Borg ship,
trying to distract the Borg from the Enterprise.
The Borg sent a message to the Romulans.

"Intercept it, and put it on screen." Picard ordered.

"We are Borg. A sensor analysis of your ship told us that you
are inferior. We will improve your quality of life. You will be
assimilated. If you resist, we will destroy your ship."

"Well, straight to the point, like always." Riker commented.

The Romulan ship fired a disruptor.

The Borg were prepared for phaser fire, but they had never been
in contact with a disruptor before. A part of their ship
exploded, but they started to repair it immediately at a very
high speed.

The Romulans fired again. This time, the effect was reduced by
more than 50%.

The Romulan Commander noticed, and increased power to the
disruptors, firing again.

This time, the Borg ship showed no effect other than firing a
high-energy weapon at the Romulan ship.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Eleven

The next thing the Enterprise's sensors detected was a big explosion. The
Borg weapon had destroyed most parts of the Romulan ship.
The bridge crew looked at the explosion on the main viewer without saying
a word.
Data's sensors detected remaining life signs aboard the Romulan ship.

Picard's communicator interrupted the silence.
"LaForge to Picard. We are ready."
Picard ordered to activate the cloaking device immediately, and the
Enterprise became invisible instantly.

"Set a course for the Borg ship, fire as soon as possible. We must distract
them to prevent them from destroying the Romulan ship completely. We must
save the survivors."

Seron laid in the course, and Worf pushed the "FIRE" button.

Chapter Twelve

Dr. Crusher was the last person to arrive in the individual Borg's cave.
Picard had put her in charge - and so she considered it her duty to look
after all the other ones and to be the last one to move into a safer
place.

She went through the cave to talk to Hugh.

"We are defenseless. The collective is more powerful than we are, and
they destroyed all our weapons. Apparently this time, resistance is futile."
Hugh greeted her.

"We must contact Starfleet Command for assistance. You used a subspace
communicator to send us a distress call. Where is it?"

"The collective damaged it beyond repair. We have abandoned the remaining
parts outside."
"Could you lead some of our technicians to the parts? Maybe they can repair
something."
"You can try, though I do not believe it is possible to repair it." Then,
he told another Borg to lead the way.
Ensign T'Pal normally worked in engineering. Thus, Dr. Crusher assigned her
to lead the away team. Ensign Pike followed. Lieutenant Talas accompanied
the team to care for their security - the collective Borg could come back,
after all.

The remaining parts of the subspace communicator looked like a pile of junk
to Talas, who was not a good technician. T'Pal started to work on the
remaining parts, with Pike's assistance.

"Why don't we just take the remaining parts to the cave? We can be detected
by the Borg sensors out here!" Talas asked - again showing his lacking
knowledge of technical equipment.

"We can't send subspace messages from in there, Sir. " t'Pal answered.
"The same material that protects us from being detected by Borg sensors
prevents us from sending subspace messages. We must assemble the parts
here."

t'Pal and Pike talked about the wrecked communicator. The results were not
looking too good for them. Some essential parts of the device were
destroyed beyond repair. With some work, the power source could be replaced
by a phaser, and the data processing between the sender and the input
console could be replaced with a tricorder, but a part of the sender was
damaged, as well.
Pike suggested using parts from a communicator to repair it, but t'Pal
knew that communicators were designed for short-range communications only,
and the circuits would rather burn than work in a subspace communicator.
Then, the Borg that had shown them the way interrupted their technical
discussion.

"We have some senders. The parts that linked us together while we were in
the collective are a kind of communicators. We removed them - but we did
not destroy them.
Maybe you can use them to repair the device."

The Borg left for the cave to get the abandoned link devices.

Chapter Thirteen

The Borg ship was not damaged by the Enterprise's photon torpedoes. A
tractor beam was sent out from the Borg ship. It missed the Enterprise.

"They have missed, Sir. I think they were tricked by the cloaking
device." Worf said.

"Now we must find a way to use our advantage. Mr. Worf, Do you agree that
both phasers and photon torpedoes are useless?"

"Yes, Sir. I think the Borg have adapted to them."

"Then we must think of something else."

"Maybe not, Sir. The Borg use a highly efficient shielding, and maybe this
is because they transfer all available shield energy to the place the
weapon is aimed at. They work at a very high speed, so they could have
managed to adjust their shield when they noticed our torpedo." Seron
suggested.

"Then we can get them. Ensign Seron, get us as close to the ship as you
can. We will fire when we are as close to them as possible. Maybe we
can be too fast for them."

"I would not recommend that kind of action, Captain." Data objected.
"A photon torpedo detonation in that proximity would damage the Enterprise,
as well. If they manage to destroy the cloaking device, we have no chance
against them anymore. And there are no other ships in range to stop them."

"We have no other choice, Mr. Data. It is a risk we have to take.
The Borg will continue to analyze all data they can get, and some time
they will be able to detect us even while we're cloaked. If they have time
to adapt to the cloaking device, we have no chance, as well. Ensign Seron,
course as ordered, full impulse."

"Full impulse. Aye, Sir."

The Enterprise speeded towards the huge cube-shaped ship. Seron reduced
the speed. He did not want to collide with the Borg ship. If a collision
was necessary to stop them, it was okay, but then, the collision should
be made at maximum warp to have more effect on the Borg.

"We are now as close as we can get, Captain."

"Mr. Worf, Fire!"

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance (Part 7)

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter fourteen

Worf fired a photon torpedo at the Borg ship.

"Our shields have been damaged by the explosion! They're down to 5%!
Primary hull has been damaged. Engineering reports two injuries." Worf
reported.

"We got them, Captain. According to sensors, their ship has been damaged
by 15%."

"Very well. Mr. Worf, fire!"

"That action would be highly illogical, Captain." Seron objected.
"If they have not yet adapted to our new advantage, we could destroy
another 15% of their ship - and they would still be able to repair
it. But with another blast of that force, the Enterprise will be
completely destroyed."

"Cancel firing, Mr. Worf. How long will it take them to repair their
ship, Mr. Data?"

"Unknown. If they still worked at the same speed as in our first encounter,
their weapons and warp drive should be back on-line in 5 hours and 27
minutes. But I think they have improved their systems."

"That should give us enough time to save the Romulans. Hail them."

The Romulan Commander appeared on screen.

"Thank you for saving us, Captain. Our weapons are still off-line, but
our warp drive is ready. I suggest you beam our engineers back, and
we leave for a star base. We must have every ship ready if the Borg
enter our territory."

Picard followed the Commander's suggestion, then he ordered to go back
to the planet to check out on the crew.
"The cloaking deivce must remain on-line. They must not know where we have
gone when they return to normal mode. Mr. Worf, Mr. LaForge, you will see
to that. Ensign Seron, warp one."

"Warp one? Why so slow?" Riker asked.

"Borg ships are very advanced, number one. They might pick up subspace
fields, and the subspace field at warp one is much smaller than the
ones at faster speeds.
We will increase speed when we're out of here. Mr. Seron, engage."

The Enterprise's warp engines started.

"Captain, we have a problem with the cloaking device. It doesn't work
while we are at warp speed!" LaForge notified the bridge.

"Can you do something about it?"

"Negative, Sir. We don't understand the Romulan cloaking technology,
and to prevent us from changing that, the Romulan engineers have placed
a bomb on the cloaking device that will destroy the antimatter
containment field if we open the device to have a close look at it."

"Merde. Ensign, increase speed to warp eight. If we can't remain
undetected, we should at least get an advantage."

The Enterprise increased its speed, heading for the crew's planet.

Chapter Fifteen

One of the individual Borg brought the Engineering team the abandoned
linking parts.

Ensign t'Pal started analyzing them. It would not have been a problem
to her under normal circumstances, but without a science tricorder and
without appropriate repair tools, it was quite a difficult job.
At first, the Vulcan couldn't understand how the gadget worked.

The Borg tried to explain to her what he knew about it - but he knew
rather few about it. Technical knowledge on the Borg improvements was
not saved in their brains. In the times of the collective, he could
have accessed the information from one of the Borg central computers,
but in his individual form, he had no such access.

The Borg explaied this. He added "Still I would not want to be a part
of the collective again.
They gave us excellent knowledge, but we had no use for it. We were just
operating - like a computer. Without a conscience, and without knowing
anything about the effects our deeds would have."

While the Borg discussed the advantages and disadvantages with Lieutenant
Talas, t'Pal continued working on the link.
They just had to find out how this kind of communication worked.

Suddenly, her communicator beeped. "t'Pal here." she said.

"This is Doctor Crusher. We have good news. We've just got a message
from the Enterprise. They are alive, and the ship is still operational."

"Have they defeated the Borg?"

"No. The Borg ship has been damaged, but it is not beyond repair. Mr. Data
estimates it will take them 6 hours to get back here, and another hour to
detect the Enterprise."

"An entire hour? What are they doing?"

"They have equipped the Enterprise with a Romulan cloaking device, Ensign.
The Borg can not yet detect cloaked ships. They've never seen one before."

"Interesting tactics. I just wonder why the Romulans gave their cloaking
device away so easily."

"Captain Picard thinks they want our help to be saved from the Borg, an
enemy they could not defeat on their own."

"Maybe yes, but it is still atypical for a Romulan. We should be prepared
for another surprise."

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance
(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter sixteen

The Enterprise dropped its speed, then cloaked, and entered the planet's
orbit.

Picard tapped his communicator. "Picard to Crusher. What's going on on the
planet?"

Dr. Crusher explained the situation to Picard.

"I think we should talk to the individual Borg. They may be the only solution
to our problem.
Mr. Data, Mr. LaForge, you're with me. Number One, you have the bridge."

"I must object." Riker said. "You should not beam down to the planet, Captain.
The individual Borg may be a help, of course, but they may as well be a trap."

"Your objection is noticed, Number One. I need to talk with these Borg by
myself.
If the Borg should come early, and you think they can detect you, you are
ordered to leave orbit at maximum speed."

Picard and Data left the bridge.

Chapter Seventeen

Picard, Data and LaForge materialized in front of the crew's cave's entry.
Hugh welcomed them on behalf of the Borg.

"We need your help to fight the collective." Picard explained. "We managed
to trick them with a cloaking device, but I think they'll adapt to the new
situation quite fast."

"I agree. Their adaption system is very efficient, and the network is protected
against wrong commands, quite well. After the disaster in sector 001, they even
put the regenerative command on a higher level."

"Can you tell me how the system works? Maybe we can find an entry point." Data
suggested.

"I don't know a lot about the system, Mr. Data. When we needed information
about these things in the time of the collective, we just accessed it using
our link. But now, this source of information is closed."

"Do you know something about their weapons, or their shielding? Is there a
possibility to take that down?"

"No. Even if the systems are down, they can repair them in mere seconds."

While Picard and Data continued discussing several theories about the Borg
with Hugh, the away team returned.

"We think it was no longer necessary to build a subspace communicator with
the Borg linking parts, since the Enterprise is here. If you need it,
however, I think we can build it up in few minutes."

"Wait, did you say Borg linking parts?"

"Yes, Sir. Why?"

"Mr. Data, with the Borg linking parts, shouldn't it be possible to access
the Borg network?"

"It is quite likely. I will try."

Data collected the linking parts, and analyzed the parts.

"I don't think we can connect them to the ship's computer to place the
commands, Captain. They need a completely different input source."

"Yes. They need brainwave input." Hugh added.

"Do you think you can modify them to one-way? Send commands, but not receive
others? Then, we could add the parts to a person, and have the person send
the Borg new commands."

"Negative. They've added a special security in their systems. Every sent
command is acknowledged with a kind of code that has to be re-sent. There
is no way to decode the system." Hugh answered.

"Do you think a Vulcan mind is strong enough to send orders to the Borg, and
not accept theirs?" Picard asked.

"It is possible, but would be too dangerous for the Vulcan. I don't think
the Vulcan could take it. Vulcans can control themselves - but the Borg
linking is quite strong." Hugh tried to answer.

"An android can." Data interrupted them. "I have not been programmed to take
orders from the Borg - and my positronic brain output resembles your brain
waves. I think it might work."

"Hugh?"

"It is possible. But I think the collective could adapt to that quite fast."

"Then we have to be faster. Mr. Data, are you aware of the risks?"

"Yes, Sir. I request permission to be assimilated."

Geordi and some Borg engineers started to work on Data.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Eighteen

Picard's communicator chirped. Commander Riker's voice came through.
"Riker to Captain Picard. The Borg have returned."

"Can they detect the Enterprise while it's cloaked?"

"I don't know, Sir. They are in orbit around the planet, so it seems they
know where we are, but maybe they are just looking for the individual Borg."

"Can you beam me up while you are cloaked?"

"It should be possible. But we would, of course, have to drop our shields,
and maybe that's what the Borg are waiting for."

Picard thought about it a moment, then he answered.
"Make it so, Number One. The Borg collective doesn't expect you to care about
individual crew members. They think it would be futile to beam one of us
aboard. They are not expecting it."

"What about Data and Geordi?"

"They'll stay here. Data must be Borgified."

"Data must WHAT?" Riker exclaimed.

"I'll explain to you later, Number One. Beam me up."

Picard dissolved, and rematerialized in the transporter room. He left the room
for turbolift one, to go directly to the bridge.

Geordi and the Borg continued working on Data.

Chapter Nineteen

"Captain's log, supplemental.
We are still in orbit around the class M planet in the Epsilon Theta system.
The collective Borg have returned, but not yet taken any action. I hope they
cannot detect us while we are cloaked.
On the planet, Chief Engineer Geordi LaForge and some individual Borg are
working to link Commander Data to some Borg linking parts. We think Data
can plant wrong orders into the Borg collective when he's ready."

"The Borg ship is turning around!" Worf interrupted the Captain's log entry.

"Merde. Maybe they have noticed us. Mr. Worf, prepare for saucer separation.
Two cloaked targets should be more difficult to handle."

"This won't work, Captain. If we separate the saucer, it will de-cloak. The
cloaking device is in engineering."

The Enterprise was hit by an energy beam.

"They can, indeed, detect us. They have adapted to the new situation. Mr. Worf,
are we damaged?"

"Shields holding, no damage yet." Worf answered.

Picard tapped his communicator to contact LaForge. "Mr. LaForge, how long
will you need to finish work on Data? The Borg have detected us."

"It will take a while, Captain. We have added the Borg implants to Data, but
we must work on the interface. It is designed to work with biological life
form's brain waves. Data's brain output is similar, but it's not exactly
the same."

Picard doubted the Enterprise could survive the situation. A battle against
a Borg ship would be hopeless.

"Any ideas how we can stop the Borg long enough?"

No answers.

The Borg locked a tractor beam on the Enterprise.

"Mr. Worf, they have adapted to phasers and photon torpedoes, and even a
deflector dish weapon. Can you think of anything else?"

"We could try to fill a shuttle with antimatter, and send it on a collision
course with the Borg ship. But I don't expect it to work. It's too similar
to a photon torpedo."

"We'll have to try everything. Mr. Worf, prepare a shuttlecraft for your
idea."

Worf left the bridge to start working on the shuttle.

The Borg ship increased power to the tractor beam. The Enterprise came closer
to the Borg ship every minute.

"Mr. Worf, how long until you finish the shuttle?"

"We'll have it in 5 minutes." The Klingon's voice came through Picard's
communicator.

"That should be enough, Captain. If the Borg maintain the current tractor
beam force, we'll have 17.3 more minutes." Seron reassured him.

"Mr. LaForge, when will you finish Mr. Data?"

"It's quite a difficult job, Captain. I guess in half an hour, we should
be able for a test run, but I can't promise anything."

"You have 15 minutes. Picard out." Nervously, Picard stood up from his
command chair, stretched his uniform jacket, and went to the science
station. He wanted to have a closer look at the sensor readings of the Borg
ship.

"We have 10 more minutes." Seron added.

In the same moment, Worf's voice came through Picard's communicator.

"We're ready with the shuttle, Captain."

"Launch the shuttle. Maximum speed."

"Aye, Sir. Maximum speed."

Worf entered the program into the shuttle's computer, set a ten second delay,
and left the shuttle bay. He had to be on the bridge to monitor the new
makeshift weapon.

Hello. Here's, finally, the 10th part of "Resistance". It took me so long
because of a bad flu (and neither Bones nor Dr. Crusher were close enough
to help :-(()

Chapter Twenty

The shuttle started its course to the Borg ship. It increased to Warp 5 as
soon as it had cleared the Enterprise's shuttle bay.

"Shuttle engines fully operational, antimatter containment field seems to
work." Worf reported. "Impact in 10 seconds. 9 ... 8 ... 7 ... 6 ..."

The Enterprise was hit by an energy weapon from the Borg ship.
"Shields are down to 12 %! We can't take another shot from them!" An Ensign
in Engineering exclaimed. "Primary sensor array damaged."

Worf continued the countdown "3... 2 ... 1"

The shuttle hit the Borg ship and exploded, setting free the antimatter.

"Qapla'! The Borg have released their tractor beam."

"Any further damage to the Borg ship?" Picard asked.

"Unknown", Seron, who manned Data's station at the moment, answered. "The
sensors are damaged, and we can't get explicit readings. I'll try to get a
visual."

Seron typed a few commands in his console, and the main viewer displayed a
part of the Borg ship. It looked as if the shuttle had done only little
damage.
The only thing they could make out for sure was that the Borg ship had started
repairing itself already.

"Mr. LaForge, how long till Mr. Data is ready?" Picard asked, tapping his
communicator.

"We're ready for a first test run, Captain." the chief engineer replied.

"Tell Mr. Data to stop the repairs on the Borg ship. They must not get that
tractor beam on-line again!"

LaForge informed Data. Data's neck started to move, and some lights at the
Borg implants started glowing.

The entire bridge crew looked at the viewscreen.
Nothing happened. The Borg ship still repaired itself.

"Mr. LaForge, it doesn't seem to work."

"I don't understand this. It should work. We'll check the connection again."

"Make it so."

With increasing nervosity, the bridge crew looked at the Borg ship. Soon, it
would be ready to attack the Enterprise, again, and the ship wouldn't have
a chance if Data's connection didn't work.

"Captain, given the current rate of repairs on the Borg ship, and the records
of the first encounter with the Borg, they should be ready to fire in few ..."

Before Ensign Seron could finish his sentence, the Borg fired again.

Chapter Twenty-One

"Shields are down to 5 %, damage to primary hull on deck seven."
Worf announced.

"Evacuate deck seven!" Picard shouted.

"Not necessary, Captain. They're still on the planet."

"Can you ..."

Picard was interrupted by his communicator.

"LaForge to Enterprise. We have found a possible explanation for the failure.
When we connected the Borg implants to Data, the subspace emitter was slightly
damaged. We can't send anything to the Borg from here."

"Could you affect them from aboard the Enterprise?"

"That's likely, though I can't guarantee for anything."

"We have to beam them up. Mr. Worf, if we lower the shields, the Borg can
destroy us without any problems. Try to keep that time as short as possible."

"I recommend we place that planet between their ship and ours. Even if the
Borg wouldn't care about destroying a planet, it should provide efficient
shielding." Worf suggested.

"It would be a logical choice - I don't think the Borg would fire at the
planet. They have no reason for that.
In addition, maybe they need some time to find us while we're cloaked."
Seron added.

"Make it so."

The Enterprise went around the planet at full impulse speed, then lowered
the shields, and beamed the away team up.

Immediately after the transporter chief reported their arrival, Picard
ordered to raise the shields.

Data was ready for a second try.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Twenty-Two

Before Data could start accessing the link, Seron notified the others of a
new reading on his sensors.

The Enterprise was sending data - but the receiver could not be detected.

Data looked at the readings. "Intriguing.", he said, "Whoever it is - the
sender is accessing all data about Federation starships."

"The Borg?"

"They would not have a use for the data, Captain. They know everything about
our ships, already."

"That's true, but who else could it be?"

No one answered, until Seron got a better sensor reading.

"The sender is in Engineering."

Worf assembled a security team and left for engineering, while Data started
his attempt to manipulate the Borg ship.

His head started turning around.

"Accessing... Accessing..."

Data started accessing the Borg collective, trying to find a leak in their
security systems. Since Data's implants were from a Borg who used to be
second of fifty-three before he became an individual, he should have access
to most systems.

"Accessing..."

Picard's communicator chirped.

"Worf to Captain Picard. We have found the sender."

"Take him to arrest cell one for investigation."

"That's not possible, Captain. It is a computer, and it's in the Romulans'
cloaking device. That's why they left it to us."

"Can you remove it?"

"Negative. The Romulans have protected the device. When opened, it will
explode, and fill engineering with deadly radiation."

"We have one person aboard who can survive that radiation." LaForge said,
looking at Data.

"Mr. Seron, How long can we keep that planet between the Borg ship and the
Enterprise?"

"Given the current speed of the Borg ship, I think we can stay on the other
side of the planet for 37 minutes."

"Then we can prevent the Romulans from getting too much information." Picard
said. "Terminate Data's link to the Borg ship."

Picard was aware of the risk he took - but giving the Romulans all
available informations about the Federation would be even more of a risk.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Data left for Engineering. He knew he had to hurry up - especially since
he knew the Borg better than Seron did. The Borg would find a way to adapt
to the new strategy before Seron's 37 - 35 by now - minutes had passed.

All engineers were told to leave Engineering. When Data was alone, he started
working on the cloaking device.

He opened it - and engineering was filled with a deadly amount of gamma
radiation. Data activated the emergency seals. If some of this radiation left
Engineering uncontrolled, it could result in the loss of more than 1000
people on the Enterprise.

Though Data was not quite familiar with Romulan technology, he managed to find
and disable the sender without further problems.

He told the transporter chief to beam him out of Engineering. Using the
doors was too dangerous because of the radiation - and trying to access the
collective Borg mind from Engineering would not be a good idea. If something
went wrong, nobody would be there to notice.

According to Seron's calculation, he had 15 more minutes.

Data arrived on the bridge, and started his link to the Borg ship immediately.

"Accessing... Intriguing... Course 148 mark 72. Maximum speed. Delete memory
areas two, seven and five..."

The Borg ship started turning away from the Enterprise, and accellerated to
a high speed. Data continued giving commands.

"Turn off sensors... Set c..." He fell on the floor, showing no life signs.

"Mr. LaForge, what happened?" Picard asked.

LaForge had already started scanning Data. The expression on his face led
Picard to the conclusion that the readings didn't look good for Data.

Then, LaForge confirmed Picard's concerns. "He's dead."

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Resistance

(c) 1995 by Bernhard Rosenkraenzer

Chapter Twenty-Four

"Captain's log, star date 48059.4
We have managed to get the collective Borg ship out of Federation space - but
we have lost one of our most valuable crew members.
We have canceled our mission at Ragar IV in order to take Data's body to the
Daystrom institute. Maybe some time in the future, someone will be able to
revive him."

Picard finished his log entry, thinking about Data. He didn't really believe
Data could be restored. In fact, he mentioned the possibility in his log only
in order to calm down the crew.

While Picard thought about a replacement for Data - as difficult as it was for
him, it had to be done - the turbolift doors opened.

Before he realized it, Picard heard a familiar voice saying "Request
permission to return to duty, Sir."

"Data! We thought you were dead!"

"When they discovered my intrusion in their commands, the Borg overloaded my
primary circuits, Captain.
My self-repair program took my full power, that's why you couldn't read any
life signs."

"They noticed your intrusion? Can they undo your programming?"

"Negative. I ordered them to get out of Federation territory, delete all
information about Federation ships - and forget the access codes for high
level commands.
I believe they will find a way to adapt to the new situation, but given the
current information we have about the Borg, I guess they'll be 83 452 light
years away from Federation space in that time."

"Why so slow? They adapted to our cloaking device lots faster."

"They were not prepared for sabotage from within, Captain. By the time they
put their regenerative command on a higher level, they thought they were
completely safe from that."

"It's good to have you back, Mr. Data." Picard said. Broadening his grin, he
added "And, permission granted."

The Enterprise set a course for Ragat IV, then increased to Warp 8.
