Subject: Amps for Martin Logans

Henry,

As a new Martin Logan owner (bottom-o-the line Aerius) your list of
good amps was quite interesting. I thought I'd add my thoughts as
well.

I am currently using the McCormack DNA-1, which does a credible
job, sounding better than the solid state Audio Research amp I
auditioned the speakers with in the store. I've never liked the
Audio Research solid state amps much, so improving on the sound in
this case might not mean very much.

However, sometime in the next few weeks, I'll have an opportunity
to try out a Melos 200 stereo amp to see what kind of improvements
that might offer. If you're still curious at that point, I'd be
happy to post my feelings about that match up.

You can also add the Audio Research Classic 120 monoblocks to your
list of amps that sound good with the Martin Logans. I heard a
pair of Quests in a friend's system driven by a pair of Classic
120s and was very taken by the combo. He had been using Magnapan
MGIIIa speakers, and I had never been horribly impressed with the
sound he was getting. With the Quests, it was a far different
story.

If you can deal with FETs, TAA has some excellent amps done by
Erno Borbely and the parts are available in Europe (he's in Germany).
I've built his 60W amp and am using it on my top end. Also in TAA were
a 100W DC and a 100W servo which a friend has built. It has come to my attention recently that he has done a number of redesigns and has a few
new kits out. I don't know Borbely Audio's number in Germany, but the US distributor is WelbourneLabs.

TAA has had a number of excellent pieces including one by Norman Thagard &
Nelson Pass of Threshold (Audio Amateur "Build The A-75 Power Amplifier
Part I and II", Part 1, number 4, 1992 and Part 2, number 1, 1993).
Its a new class A 75W amp fully balanced & complementary 2-stage design
(sold assembled by "Pass Labs" for over $3k). He's also got the old
favoritePass A40. The best place to call is

since they are the kit distributor for TAA (they're both run by Ed Dell.)
and are about to sell PCB's and matched MOSFET's. They supply full kits
(w/o case) and article reprints. Nelson Pass claimed that it sounds as good
as multi-grand monster amps such as Krell, Threshold, Mark Levinson,...

Subject: Linn LP12 v. VPI Jr. Results
Date: 2 Aug 1993 13:29:42 GMT

After getting about 30 responses by e-mail, and about 6 requests to post
the results of my query, I am here to disclose the knowledge that I have
gleaned.

Instead of posting all the commentary, I can sum it up:

Those who own the VPI jr. LOVE it.

Those who own the Linn LP12 LOVE it.

It seems to be a matter of personal taste. I find that most VPI owners
hate Linn, while the same is not true the other way around.

Both have very open upgrade paths. The Linn seems to be a little more
cartridge-specific. If you are going new, the VPI is less expensive, but
there is nothing wrong with a used table. Both are quite reliable.

The interesting thing that I discovered is that both sets of owners state
that their own table is better isolated from shock and the like. Yep, the
VPI owners swear that the massive base does it, while the Linnies say the
suspension does it, and that massive base on the VPI is death.

So, it seems to be a virtual toss-up. If I had to count the responses and
give you numbers, which I have not done yet, I would say it is close to
even.

Your best bet: go with the one that you think sounds best to you, and will
fit best in your system. There was one consensus: everyone LOVED their
table, no matter the brand. It would be hard to go wrong.

Thank you for all the quick, informative and in-depth response that was
sent to me. Happy listening!

It's pretty easy to tell if the AC cord is just a cord or had a
transformer.

1) Is there just a cut off wire? If so, chances are good it was AC
only

2) If not, look at the connector. Is it an IEC type or some other 2-3
pin job? If so, AC cord only

3) The acid test. Open the case and play spot-the-transformer. If
there is one, there certainly wasn't an external one.

My speaker shopping has now taken me beyond the Vandersteen. To date,
they are still undoubtedly the best sounding full-range speaker in the price
range. (The 1B)
I was introduced to the Ribbon technoloogy in speakers about a week
ago, well out of my price range, but then Saturday I was shown ones called
Magneplaner, I believe. I have no idea if these are what the group would call
high-end, but my questions lie in the technology more than the brand name.
The Magneplaner speakers (about $700pr. ) were better sounding in the
highs and mids than the Vandersteens. Even better than the 2Ce. No room for
doubt at all. I didn't mention the bass, but that was because the speakers
didn't either. The salesman said they went to 40Hz, but I call 'bullshit'.
Compared to the 1B they had no bass at all, though they were supposed to be a
full range speaker. What I need to make a decision is imformation about adding
a sub to the system. The salesman openly admitted that it would be hard to
match the sound with a cone/magnet sub. Is this true? I don't think that this
type of speaker has bass in the highest price range.
The thing is, for $700 the Vandersteens are the clear choice, but now
I'm considering spending more to get the Magneplaner with a sub. Has anyone
else looked at this? I realize now more than ever the trade-off price range
I'm in. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'd lean towards the tube unit myself, but it also depends on the impedance
curve of your speakers- if they dip down to 2-3 ohms at certain frequencies
I think the AMC may have trouble driving them. You won't find this info in
the typical sales brochure, but Stereophile includes it in their test reports.

Jim Shaw writes;
>"I myself have not seen evidence...that the reviews are deliverately skewed to
the positive...Why waste time and space on bad stuff when a lot of fairly decent
stuff is available for review."

In over 20 years of occasional reading of Stereo Review, I've never read a
review that was even remotely critical of anything other than a component's
control layout. Nor have I ever read anything which indicates that their
test technician is capable of hearing and describing meaningfully the audible
differences between components. I suppose this might be accidental, but my
strongly held belief is that Julian Hirsch got into audio because he liked to
play with gadgets, not because he's a critical listener or a music lover.

As for the question posed above ("Why waste time...), that's one of the major
reasons for reading reviews; to find out what equipment not to waste time on.
The magazine should be making an effort to simplify your search. This means
alerting you to the bad stuff as well as the good stuff.

And think how much better off the "high-end" would be today if, in the early
70s, Stereo Review had accepted and fostered the growth of a "premium" audio
market instead of trying to ridicule it. Practically the first 10 years in the high-end audio business were spent trying to justify it's own existence in the
face of so-called "experts" like Hirsch.

Other than that, I agree with what you've said.

Subject: CD chassis resonance -advice?
Date: 2 Aug 93 16:28:01 GMT

I own an early Mod Squad Prism (650-based) which has had DAC and filter
upgrades and now incorporates an Isodrive II stabilizer. The manual
suggests that smoothness and delicacy can be improved by placing a
one- to two-pound weight on top of the unit's left side.

I did this some time ago, using a softcover book (TAS equipment guide),
figuring the pages would absorb some additional vibrational energy. There
was indeed a changed sound that, depending on where I put the book,
represented an improvement. But the effect was not uniform across
the spectrum, and it varied depending on the position of the book
left to right on the chassis. It seemed that I traded off HF "air"
and upper-mid liquidity for a more solid bass and cleaner attack
with clearer lines within instrumental groups. Soundstaging also
seemed more natural for different parts of the frequency band depending
on the position of the weight. I tweaked by ear (also shifting the
3 Navcom Silencers supporting the unit) until I struck what seemed the
best balance. Movements of 1/4" of the book had quite audible results.
But I always felt that the compromise result was not optimum for all
parts of the band (and I knew I was compensating for a lot of "glare").

I've just upgraded to the Supermods version of the Monarchy 22 DAC
(a tremendous unit, BTW), using the Prism as transport for the time
being. Now everything is much clearer (almost no glare) but the
changes that result from shifting the book atop the Prism are even more
apparent, and I am still frustrated by the feeling that I'm not getting
the best possible balance across the audio band.

I hypothesize that the chassis resonances being "tuned" by the book
are causing frequency-dependent jitter in the data stream. I'd like
to ask your opinions on several points:

-Is this the correct explanation for the differences I hear? If not,
(or not completely) what else may be contributing?

-Would getting a more modern transport (stable platter, big buffer,
good reclocking, non-resonant chassis) take care of most of this
variation? Would something like an Alchemy DTI do it?

-If so, what transports would people recommend in the under $1500 range
(new or used)? I'm particularly interested in thoughts on the EAD T-1000,
 which looks promising to me.

-Finally, in the meantime, can anyone recommend a more effective way
to tame resonances in this kind of chassis that 1) doesn't cost much,
 2) doesn't just shift the problem around, and 3) won't lower the resale
 value when I upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm happy to get e-mail replies, but
perhaps others would be interested, as I am, in hearing some discussion
to better understand the effects of chassis resonances generally.

I just recently, this weekend, started looking into the possibilities
of getting a high-end amp. instead of something milder. My price range has
been in the $450 range, which I realize is low budget, but I was shown a Rotel
amp for $460 or so. No tuner or remote, but the salesman said it was in the 80

80 watt amp, only 60 watt and then it jumped to 100 watt. I can only speculate
as to what he may have meant. Anybody?
I'm interested in anything that anyone has to say about Rotel

I once compared the AMC with the Marantz PM80. The PM80 has special switch
for Class-A type amp. I believe the AMC is great, but you need very
sensitive speakers, because it's only 25 watts (I believe). The PM80
has 30Watts in class-A. Personally I think these two are comparable
but the PM80 was (IMHO) the best, because it handled much easier tougher
speakers & tougher music. A very good cd for testing this is: Roger Waters,
Amused to death (The Sony Golden Edition). If systems have trouble with
power, this is the CD the bring it out in the open.

Subject: Comments on Citation Pre-Amp?
Date: 2 Aug 1993 23:18:49 GMT

Hello everyone. I know this may not qualify as "high-end" but I've
tried regular rec.audio and no one can help me. I'm looking at a Citation
21 pre amp (Citation is supposedly Harmon Kardon's higher-end line). Does
anyone have any experience with this line? It looks like a very good piece
and I'd be getting a very good deal on it, but am not familiar with Citation
products, although have some familiarity with the lower H/K line. Are they
reliable? Are they considered to be "high(er)-end" equipment? This was the
first time I'd ever seen one and it looks really nice and appears solidly built
but I thought I'd get some opinions/advice/insight first, if there was any. I
apologize if this is not considered high end equipment but I thought I'd try
here since no one any where else has any experience with the products. Thank
you in advance for any help you can offer. By the way, the rest of my system
is not high end: A NAD amplifier (2400x), a top o' the line Luxman CDP, and a
soon to be added Teac open reel tape deck, and Celestion 7 speakers. Again,
thank you for your time.

Subject: Parallel Caps in power supply to reduce impedance
Date: 2 Aug 93 23:27:28 GMT

Hi Guys,
I understand that a minimal impedance and a well regulated power supply
contributes to a good bass response of audio power amplifiers. If this is the
case, why don't manufacturers incorporate regulated supplies to the output
stage?

Also, would combining several caps(say 10pcs of 1000uf) in parallel to
make up for one large 10000uf cap reduce the impedance of the supply lines?

Thanks in advance for all informative replies.

Date: 02 Aug 93 23:22:43 GMT

I'm just finishing up building a Mullard 5-20 amp (from Hi-Fi World), and
am using motor starting capacitors. They are rated 10uf @ 330VAC (which
equates to about 465VDC. They are very high quality (and very large), being
intended to deliver 3 horsepower in 1/60 of a second. They are oil-filled.
The main difference (electrically) between these and electrolytics is that
these have a *much* lower internal impedence, which means that the power
can go in and out much faster. Theoretically this should give a much faster
response for transients. Can't beat the price either, $4.50 each (I needed
twelve).

Also, Angela Instruments (mentioned in a previous message) carries the whole
Audio Note line of audiophile resistors/capacitors/sockets/transformers/etc.
They are located in Annapolis Junction, Maryland.

Subject: Re: Linn vs VPI vs SOTA
Date: Tue, 3 Aug 1993 05:30:17 GMT

Continuing the discussion of turntables in the modern world:

I feel that buying the best turntable/arm/cartridge for the money is
the most dificult decision to be made in high-end audio. Just going
by what I've read in the Magazines, there is an upper echelon of
turntable that I can't afford. Included in this category would be the
Basis, TNT and Cosmos. These might be considered Class "A" or "A+"
tables. I won't include these models in the following discussion.

The next level of table is more affordable and might be considered
strong Class B (or Class A?) tables. Included in this category would
be the Sota Star Saphire, VPI HW19 Mk. IV and the Linn LP12 with Lingo
and Cirkus. There are fairly good bargains in the used market to be
had in this category of table. Since all three brands offer upgrade
paths from entry level through to the above configurations, I'm
wondering which technology to invest in. That is, which table to buy
with an eye on an upgrade to the best of this class. Pretend these
configurations all cost the same, which would you prefer?

With the suspension system offered by Sota, coupled with the platter
vacuum system used in the Star, Sota seems to be the technology of
choice. I can get a hardly used Saphire for about $1,000. This is
just a $600 upgrade away from the Star, which to my mind, is the top
of the line in this class of table. (Comments please - I'm almost
ready to sign the check.)

The Linn's suspension system seems extremely prone to bounciness. The
ones I've heard seem to lack power in the low frequencies. There
seems to be detail in the high frequencies, but the configuration I
heard sounded colored in the direction of overly bright.

The VPI III and IV seem difficult to set up. The VPI line seems made
to tweek - due to the suspension system VPI has deployed. It's
very difficult to tell how the sound compares to the Star.

All in all, I like the theory behind the Sota. Please let me know
your experiences and opinions.

Also, if you had a budget of $500 to invest in an arm, which one would
you buy (including bargains on used arms). I'm currently awaiting
delivery of a Blue Point Special. Unless I can be convinced that for
under $500 I can get a much better cartridge, the BPS is the one I'll
probably go with.

.....So far I have tried Hitachi 2SK135 2SJ50 (quite expensive).
    Any other recommendations?

Why don!t you try the complementary Hexfet devices IRF530/IRF9540
from International Rectifier Co.? You may order them from Elfa AB.
Ratings are as follows (n-channel/p-channel):
  P-tot. : 75/125 W
  Uds : 100/-100 V
  Id : 14/19 A
  Ugs(off) : 2...4/-2...-4 V
  Rds(on) : 0.18/0.20 ohms

I plan to use them instead of the Hitachi pair for the following reasons:
1.) Rds(on) is about 1/10 of the Hitachi pair;
2.) Easier to accomodate compared to Hitachi (TO-220 vs. TO-3);
3.) Cost is about one third of the Hitachi pair;
4.) Signal feedback through the heatsink is eliminated as the drain
terminal,
which is electrically connected to the tab on the TO-220 package, is
at a
     direct voltage.

Ugs(off) is significantly higher for the IRF pair compared to Hitachi, so
you
have to change the resistor values in the bias network to get them
conducting
properly.

It's just a cord. In the latest version of their products, they claim to be
using a special cord, which is said to do filtering.
The voltage req. should be stated on the backside, possibly with a 110/220
switch. If not you will have to open it up.

As for sound quality, I never liked the preampliwire, but lived happily
with an Ampliwire 50wpc for ten years.

Haven't had mine long enough to comment, except that the h'phone jack
sucks: my Sennheisers tend not to make contact with the ground,
so I only get left-right :-((.
> 2.)Good sound quality.
Well, I mostly use an outboard dac. The onboard is an early philips bitstream,
sounds ok. The only analogue recording I've done is from LP's, and my turntable
is not stratospherically wonderful: the recordings sound the same as the
original to me, but then I think LP's sound compressed...
Given that the analogue in is a 3.5mm stereo jack, you won't be able
to used balanced mics. The ADC is in a separate box that looks like the
Sony D3 battery, attaches in the same way. That might protect the mic pre-
amp from some of the transport noise, but it is very crowded anyway.
The ADC box can be used to house an extra battery.

If it can, it isn't documented...
> 4.)coaxial digital in/out (I am not crazy about fiber-optic).
Aiwa has them: both in/out via the same stereo mini-jack,
which seems to be better quality than the h'phone one. It would be nicer
to have sep in & out jacks, but I made a little adapter so I could
use separate cables. There is no f.o., which could be a pain if you need
it one day...

Oh, my power supply is a bit of a worry. There is enough leakage current
to arc to ground and hurt your finger if it is the route to earth. Could
be mine is faulty, could be only when run at 240 volts.
Cheers, GB
