Babylon 5 group,
Ok, I'm awake now. Let me give my final comments now
that I have thought about the project some more.

1) ISU bought a very nice scanner, high quality, etc

2) I am not a high quality scanner, I learned alot about scanning
last night, the images suffered by being my learning mechanism.

3) the 24 bit masters got blown away (!#$%), so the GIFs are all I have.
I hope to try this again at the end of the week and make good JPEGs.
I will contact the people at that time who wanted 24 bit JPEGs as
   I do.

4) the place again; ftp.coe.montana.edu in directory tmp

5) a word on quality. When we viewed the images on the DecStation
5000/25's they looked alright. They were ok as well on the Mac.
We used xv on the station, gifconverter on the mac. When we pulled
them up on the DecStation 3100's they looked *very* dark. we used
the xv -perfect command to give xv all the colours it could get.
you will most likely have to play with your viewer to get the
   quality up.

6) There will be more to come.

take care

Hey B5 fans!
Well, after much research, and the help of a friendly research
specialist at the Weleyan University Olin Library, I was finally able
to dig up a phone number and an address for Warner Bros, Inc. in
Burbank California.
I called last Friday, got shuffled from the switchboard to
someone else, who realized after a few minutes that I needed to talk
to someone else, who wasn't at his desk. Actually, it's not her
fault - the switchboard sent me to the wrong place, and she did know
what I was talking about. It's just when I got to the request phase
of the conversation that she realized I needed to be redirected. And
very kindly, she took down my name and number and left a message for
the guy I needed to talk to, as well as giving me his direct line.
I tried calling a couple more times Friday, but he was never in.
This afternoon, I was getting ready to give it another try, when
guess who called?
Anyway, it was a fairly intersting conversation. It boils down
to this. He was first of all very happy to hear of my interest in
Babylon 5, and that I wanted to help promote it. Secondly, he
himself did not have a copy of the tape with the promotional clips,
but said that he would look into getting one for me and let me know.
Finally, he told me he'd send me some of the press releases and such
(I said I wanted to do a spread in the magazine I run, which is
true), and that he would send me a press kit when it was finished,
which he said it practically was.
Such is my story with Warner Bros. Since it was my research that
turned up the orginal number for the switchboard, I'll pass that
along to you all: (818) 954-6000. The address I got, though I don't
know it's accuracy, is:
                       Warner Bros. Inc.
                       4000 Warner Bvd.
Burbank, CA ????? (I didn't get the zip - you
                                          get it from your post
                                          office)
However, even though I don't need to, this word of warning. I'm not
sure how much they'd appreciate being inundated by fans calling and
asking for information. I don't know - maybe they'd be happy, but
maybe not. But at this point, they were very friendly, and I'd like
to see it stay that way. So don't call unless you're really serious
about spreading the word on B5.
Well, enough of my pseudo-moralizing. Talk to all of you later,
and enjoy the info!
                            Matt

A claim was made recently on rec.arts.startrek.current that Babylon 5 so
far has only had the pilot "movie" written and filmed, but that otherwise
is on hold until the premiere airs. (The writer said that he expects that
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will be in its second season by the time
Babylon 5's first season starts.)

Does anyone know if this is true? Or will B5 be appearing weekly as soon as
it premieres? Or something in-between?

I would hate for the premiere to air and then have to wait six months for
more stories. :-P

The E! (Entertainment Television cable channel) special on the making of
Babylon 5 started airing last night. From posts on GEnie, the first airing
was 9:30 p.m. ET Wednesday. No real advance warning, even JMS found out
about it online. The special focuses mostly on the prosthetics and
animatronics, making things look "cute" and not really giving a good idea of
what the show will be like. Supposedly E! repeats these specials several
times. No details on specific repeat times, though.

I managed to get a hold of JMS last nite on the Internet. Um, I asked him
if he could compose like a message a month to post to the group, but he
said it was hard enough to keep up with the other systems he is on. He said
it is a lot easier to answer questions about the show than to just talk
about it... which I can understand.
He thanked me for the interest as usual. Im not going to reveal the location

Michael,
Babylon 5 at this point is officially only a pilot movie. However,
J. Michael Straczynski has dropped very strong hints that Warners is planning
on giving the go ahead for the series and that once the pilot movie is
completed, they will officially give the go ahead. JMS has mentioned a couple
of times that he has been writing scripts "just for giggles" and has talked to
other writers, showing them the scripts "just for giggles". Plus, he quit his
job as an executive producer on "Murder She Wrote" about a month ago. Not to
many people would quit a high profile job like that unless there were either
some conflicts on the show or they had other irons in the fire. I think it is
the latter. It is possible that if they get the go ahead early enough, they
may be able to have weekly episodes within a month or so after the pilot airs.

Here's what I've gathered on the timetable for B5 and the other Warner Bros.
Prime Time Entertainment Network shows. This is assuming one night of
programming each week (Tuesday night on most stations):

Late Jan, early Feb - Two hour premieres of both Time Trax and Kung Fu: The
Legend Continues, followed by weekly episodes.

mid-to-late Feb - Babylon 5 movie (with promos running during the weeks
leading up to it on the other PTEN shows).

March (according to USA Today) : The Wild West miniseries (a look at the Wild
West ala PBS's "The Civil War").

late March or early April - Babylon 5 goes weekly to launch a second night of
programming.

There is an article in this weeks issue of Broadcasting magazine mentioning
that Warners may use B5 to anchor a second night of programming. I haven't
seen the article yet, so I don't know what details it has that might ad to
this.

An additional note on the E! making of special, it focuses on the
animatronics, specifically ones that are only briefly glimpsed on the show.
Their emphasis is on "cute", which JMS did not really care for. It is
supposed to repeat sometime on Sunday. Will send out email if I get a
specific time.

Sheesh. I send out a note saying how quiet things are, and the
next day I find half a dozen posts.... Either my mailserver is
forwarding stuff really late, or I just have impeccable timing.
Anway, as for the start dates of the new PTEN programs. I talked
recently to my local PTEN carrier on the phone, and according to
them (if memory serves), Time Trax is scheduled/requested to premiere
on January 20th. Kung Fu: TLC is slated for January 27th. Each will
go to series immediately. B5 is scheduled/requested for February
23rd at 8:00 p.m. eastern. That is the pilot movie, at least.
As has been previously mentioned, B5 has not been "officially"
approved for series yet. However, JMS has dropped strong hints that
it unofficially has been. And as also previously mentioned, I have
also heard that while final scripts have not been written, JMS has
fooled around a bit and has talked to some writers about some
scripts, and... Well, you all get the idea. My impression is that
he's working on it, but quietly, getting ready. Also, JMS has
mentioned that the Warner Bros. execs that have seen the rough cut
and so forth have been absolutely floored and impressed with what
they've seen, which is a good sign.
But when will it go to series? The date that I've heard tossed
around is a November start, actually. This March date is the first
time I've heard anything that soon. My guess, for what it's worth,
would be something like August/September, though I have nothing to
base that on but a little logical guesswork. Specifically, it'll
take a little time to get a bunch of episodes written and "in the
can." Plus, the nature of B5 is to be a 5 year, 5 season story line,
so you'd think they'd want to start at the beginning of a season and
run straight through, rather than doing a short partial season first.
Just my $.03 worth on the topic.
    Catch everybody later!

articles in 24 pages. I have only had a chance to glance through the
many color pictures. I'll list the titles of the articles below.
You can get a copy with a VISA/MC by calling the magazine at:
1-800-798-6515. It will cost you $8.00. The newstand price (if
you have a local newstand that handles artsy-film-critique kinds of
magazines) is $5.50.

The cover has, in large font,

"BABYLON 5 Star Trek's TV Challenger"

Babylon 5 articles are titled:

The series out to change the shape of science fiction on television.
Prime time network.
Creating the series.
Foundation imaging.
The outer space cast.
Designing the future,
Alien makeups.
Costume design.
The video toaster.
The future of CGI.

for the series...in-house, we know what the situation is, but we're not

Does anyone know how B5 will handle faster then light travel. Will it be
a sort of casual "we can engage warp drive whenever" thing like ST:TNG,
or will the ships only be able to go into hyperspace at certain jump-points
within a system (kind of like in C.J. Cherryh's books). Or will it be something
completely different. If you don't know, guess, It will be interesting to see
the different opinions out there.

Also, is there a wormhole in B5 or not. I keep hearing about one but I think
people are getting confused with DS9.

binary files grabbed are compressed or tar or both
chdir PLACE "get" and "ls" commands are relative to PLACE
(only one CHDIR per ftpmail session,
and it executes before any LS/DIR/GETs)
compress compress binaries using Lempel-Ziv encoding
compact compress binaries using Huffman encoding
uuencode binary files will be mailed in uuencode format
btoa binary files will be mailed in btoa format
chunksize SIZE split files into SIZE-byte chunks (def: 64000)
ls (or dir) PLACE short (long) directory listing
get FILE get a file and have it mailed to you
(max 10 GET's per ftpmail session)
quit terminate script, ignore rest of mail message
(use if you have a .signature or
                                         are a VMSMAIL user)

>>> notes:

-> you should send complaints to the ftpmail-request address. our
postmaster does not handle ftpmail problems and you can save her
the trouble of forwarding your complaints by just mailing them to
           the right address.

-> the "Subject:" of your request will be contained in the "Subject:"
of all of ftpmail's responses to you regarding that request. You
can therefore use it to "tag" different requests if you have more
than one outstanding at any given time.

-> you must give a "connect" command, default host is
gatekeeper.dec.com, default user is anonymous, default
           password is your mail address.

-> binary files will not be compressed unless 'compress' or 'compact'
command is given; use this if at all possible, it helps a lot.
note that many files are already compressed. if you use any of
the binary-file qualifiers (compress, compact, uuencode, btoa)
without setting 'binary' first, your session will abort in error.

-> binary files will always be formatted into printable ASCII
with "btoa" or "uuencode" (default is "btoa"). if you don't
use the "binary" command, ftpmail will cheerfully try to mail
you the binary data, which will absolutely, positively fail.

-> all retrieved files will be split into chunks and mailed. the
size of the chunk is 50000 characters unless you change it with
the "chunksize" command. CompuServe users will need to set this
           to 49000.

-> if you ask for more than 10 files in a session, you will receive
an error message and your entire request will be rejected.

-> VMS/DOS/Mac versions of uudecode, atob, compress and compact
are available, ask your LOCAL wizard about them if you can't
locate them (but try gatekeeper.dec.com in /archive/pub/VMS
if you're still using a VMS system.)

-> several mail unsplitters are hiding on gatekeeper.dec.com in
/pub/mail/ua/misc/unsplit. includes one in c, one in perl,
           and one in VMS DCL.

-> there is no way to request only certain parts of a file and we
do not plan to add one in the near future, so please don't ask.

-> there is no way to delete things from the queue or to find out
the status of things in the queue, and we do not plan to add
either feature in the near future, so please don't ask.

>>> examples:

-> connect to gatekeeper.dec.com and get a root directory listing:
                connect
                ls
                quit

-> connect to gatekeeper.dec.com and get the README.ftp file:
                connect
                get README.ftp
                quit

-> connect to gatekeeper.dec.com and get the gnuemacs sources:
                connect
                binary
                uuencode
                chdir /pub/GNU
                get emacs-18.58.tar.Z
                quit

-> connect to ftp.uu.net as anonymous and get a root directory list:
                connect ftp.uu.net
                dir
                quit

As can be found in the various info postings, ships will move point-to-point
using "vortex generators". From the visuals I've seen, these installations
look like four free-floating rails that flicker then create a rotating
vortex between them that looks like a tunnel extending off to infinity. The
ships travel through this arriving at comfortable sublight speeds at the
end. The effect is really nifty (and for Captain Power fans looks like a
really nice version of a transit gate).

I just received the February issue of Cinefantastique (the B5 issue) today.
Wow! LOTS of stuff-and that's just the pictures and diagrams (I glanced
through it right before signing on here). There are pictures of the major
characters, and there are these sidebar articles in the margins of some of the
pages on the various alien ambassadors. Included in those is info on various
little things like the "Welcome to Babylon 5" sign, the alien written
languages, graphic design-the front page of UNIVERSE TODAY is shown (headlines
include "Vorlons to make Contact", "Oxygen Breather Bias on B5?" and "Narn
Protest of E.A.'s B-5 Admin Heats"), and the locator signs. In the sidbar on
Sinclair are the various insignia of the E.A. command branches (Command,
Technical, etc.). There's also Graphic Artist Ted Haigh's schematic of the
station.

Major sub-articles included are on Warner's Prime Time Network, on Joe
himself, on Foundation Imaging, on the cast, on Production Designer John
Iacovelli, on Criswell Productions-the makeup design group, on Costume
Designer Catherine Adair, on the Video Toaster, and on the future of CGI.

The whole thing runs for 24 pages.

Yeah, it's quite an involved article (or series of articles). Some funny
stuff, too.

To the question before...yes, the actors are signed (via option) to do
the series; yes, I am writing material that will be used in the series. Re:
the series pickup...I know more than I can say, and as a rule it seems I say
more than I should. Something official probably can be said after December
2nd. That's all I can say. For now.

Is December 2 the day the final mix gets delivered to Warner's?

And if you get the "GO" announcement then, will you have enough time to launch
the series soon after the movie is premiered?

(Yes, I know it's badgering. But it's *polite* badgering!)

Now that we're moving into a new phase on B5, there's one very important
lesson that I've been trying to drive into my skull, and it's simply this:
"Shut Up." Yes, it's completely possible for me to spill the beans on
everything in this show...and sure, that'd satisfy your curiosity...but now
what's left for the series? What surprises are left?

And it little serves to put ideas out there in the public eye before
you've done them, on the off-chance they wind up elsewhere.

I have to be circumspect about a few things. Problem right now is, I
have to be circumspect about a *lot* of things.  We go through phases of that;
between the last day of filming, and the start of real post production, there
was a lull...then it picked up. There was a lull just before we started
filming, lots of "Well, we had another meeting" messages. In between was
chaos and lots of interesting info from behind the scenes (at least, that's
what I like to think). We'll be coming into a new phase soon enough.

                                                                  jms

I'd like to jump in here and support Joe on this. I know I've gently chided
for information as much as anyone else here, but only about what others here
have seen. I can think of many good reasons for Joe to hold back information
at this time, for everyone's good, and I'm not about to second guess him.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been witness to this process for
the past year (happy anniversary, all), and I value very highly any insight or
knowledge I may have gleaned as a result of my acquaintance, through this
digital ether, with JMS.

As it happens, I was trying to get to sleep last night, and this question
was rolling around in my head. (I spend so much time with these characters
every day that when it comes time to collapse, they're still running around
and chatting in my head, and I have to finally yell WILL YOU PLEASE SHUT THE
HELL UP SO I CAN SLEEP HERE??

(Not that they listen, of course....)

Anyway, I was running the question of how to introduce this aspect, and
suddenly it came through. I think I've twigged to a means of doing it that'll
satisfy everyone. Subtle, but unmistakeable and to the point.

     And fun.

                                                                   jms
