Subject: TB303 Lookalikes: The Sound on Sound news...

The following are 2 news items as appeared in january's Sound On Sound
regarding forthcoming TB303 sound-a-likes. Note that neither claim to
incorporate the sequencer side of the 303:

NOVATION LAUNCH BASS STATION MONOSYNTH

The appearance of new analogue synth technology from enterprising
comapnies continues unabated, with two new contenders this month.
Novation are perhaps best known for their MM10/MM10X MIDI controller
keyboard, designed for use with Yamaha's QY10 and QY20 Music
Workstations. The Bass Station uses the same package as the MM10X, but
instead of being a mere dumb MIDI controller, hidden inside the unit is
a full, two-oscillator, analogue monosynth dedicated to bass. The Bass
Station is under full MIDI control, and although the sound source in
monophonic, the keyboard still functions as a polyphonic controller.
Not only is SysEx support offered, but all control pots send MIDI data
which can be recorded into a sequencer, for real-time sound changes
every time a sequence is played back. The Bass Station costs a very
reasonable 299.99 (UK Sterling), and is due imminently. It offers two
oscillators (with square, sawtooth and fully variable pulse waveforms),
resonant filter, two EGs, portamento (with a TB303-like autoglide),
pitch wheel and mod wheel.

CONTROL SYNTHESIS: TB303 IN A RACK?

More analogue bass choice is coming from Control Synthesis, the new
design and building arm of established classic synth suppliers Music
Control. Their imminent Deep Bass 9 (love the name), due in January, is
a 19-inch rack unit designed to mimic Roland's classic TB303 Bassline.
With the DB9, Control Synthesis aim to provide all the real time
twiddleability and sound of a TB303 under MIDI control. Tuning, cut-off
frequency, resonance, envelope modulation, decay and accent are all
tweakable in real time, and many functions can be controlled over MIDI.
Deep Bass 9 is expected to retail around the 400 (UK Sterling) mark,
although a firm price has yet to be fixed.
Producing a Bassline for the 90's seems to be the vogue at the
moment; cast your mind back to last month's news, in which we mentioned
a new monosynth based on the Bassline chipset, which is manufactured in
the USA and available soon through vintage synth specialist Synthology.
The race is on...

There you go folks. Sound is provided but not the sequencer. Although
perhaps using glide and accent (which does seem to be provided) a standard
type sequencer over MIDI might suffice as a reasonable facsimile...
