Sigma's Guide to COWS in pinball
                      ================================
                            Version as of 5/29/93

This is meant to be a definitive guide to COWS and closely related
creatures making appearances in various pinball games. Most of these
appearances are difficult to find, or are somewhat secret. In fact, I'm
not especially interested in more obvious appearances.

Most of the actual cows are in Williams/Bally games; it's a running joke
for them. Go figure.

This list is sorted alphabetically by the name of each pin.

Please send updates, corrections, comments to me, "sigma@rahul.net".

ADDAMS FAMILY
-------------

There are no cows in TAF.

BLACK ROSE
----------

Sometimes when you enter the jet bumpers, you see Cows fencing instead of
the usual pirates.

Sometimes when you start the Unlimited Millions round, you see lots of
little cows instead of the MILLIONS signs.

Sometimes when you get a Combo shot, you see a group of cows walk across
the display, accompanied by three different Moo's, one of which is
supposedly very obviously just a guy saying "Moo".

DR. WHO
-------

Hitting the Transmat target when the Transmat is not fully powered will
sometimes (at random, says Bally) show a picture of a cow dressed up as a
doctor, along with the "Transmat OOPS" message and a loud MOO.

Rumours abound that a cow sometimes shows up when you side drain.

CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON in 3-D
------------------------------

When you complete the P-A-I-D targets the first time and are shown the
ticket booth animation with the quote, "Thank you, enjoy the show", watch
the lower right corner of the screen as the animation washes away. You
should see a cow briefly. It's standing, facing left.

One of the awards from the Snackbar is also a Hamburger...

CUE BALL WIZARD
---------------

In the curtain video mode, you can find a moose/antelope. This is an
inside joke at Gottlieb/Premier. It's worth 10M. You can find a Cow Pie,
which is worth 0M.

A weak ramp shot will make Clint ask, "What kind of Cow Pie shot was that?"

Hitting the unlit Sweet Spot will make Clint ask, "Anybody seen my horse?"

DRACULA
-------

There are no cows per se in Dracula, but you do get to drive Steaks into
Dracula's heart...

FIRE!
-----

This appears to be the first Williams game with a Cow. There's a cow
moo'ing in the barn; presumably, it is Mrs. O'Leary's cow, which, as legend
has it, kicked over the lantern that started the famous Chicago fire in the
late 19th century (1888?).

It's just a sound effect, though.

FUNHOUSE
--------

Rudy sometimes makes the sound "Vrrooomm" when you hit the ramp (only in
silly mood, I think). This is not a "moo" as far as I know.

HIGH SPEED II (Getaway)
-------------

There is a deer in the forest on the plastic to the right of the Hideout
(where balls get locked).

HURRICANE
---------

Hitting the lit Hurricane ramp sometimes gets you a Moo and a full picture
of a cow chewing its cud. It may also get you a closeup of a giant eye.
And the unlit Ferris Wheel can get you an inchworm or four ducks. These
are all random.

LETHAL WEAPON 3
---------------

In Video Mode, sometimes a cow will show up instead of an enemy or innocent
bystander. The cow is considered an enemy (shoot it!), and is worth 1M
instead of the usual enemy value.

The clue to this is in the Attract Mode description of Video Mode: "Help
Murtaugh make hamburger."

SIMPSONS
--------

Quotes from Bart: "Don't have a cow, man!", "Cowabunga!"

THE ADDAMS FAMILY
-----------------

There are cows in TAF.

TWILIGHT ZONE
-------------

In early prototype machines, the stars in attract mode on TZ will sometimes
form a cow. This has since been removed, and a cow has been placed
in the game itself.

The Twilight Zone cow is in the Replay animation. Watch the center reel as
the Slot Machine spins to spell RE-PL-AY. There's a cow standing there.

WHITEWATER
----------

There are three occurences of Cows in Whitewater. The first is the fifth
item found in Bigfoot's Cave during Bigfoot Hotfoot. Once you have collected
that Cow, collecting the Mystery Canyon as a Whirlpool Award the next time
during that game will replace the usual Whirlpool animation with a picture of
the Spirit pulling a string on the legless Cow, which "MOO"s rather loudly.
The picture is labelled "The Secret of the Cow". This picture also appears
briefly in the Vacation Bonus award.

The Secret of the Cow is not worth any special points, unlike the 10M I had
claimed earlier.

The third cow in Whitewater is the famous Dueling Cows display, which can be
obtained during attract mode. Make sure there are no credits on the machine.
It may be necessary to power-cycle first on some machines. Then, press the
flipper buttons and start button in the following sequence:

3L 1S 15R 1S 23L 1S

That spells COW. Try it.
