.h1;THE AST SUPERPAK PRINT SPOOLER

When the AST SuperPak Print Spooler is invoked at a user station
or at a server, and an EP LINK command is issued, EtherPrint will
appear to be linked. However, it is not linked and will NOT spool
jobs to a shared printer. Users should not invoke this spooler if
they are using EtherPrint. Other print spoolers have not been
tested.

.h1;CUSTOMIZING ETHERMENU

When customizing EtherMenu it is a good idea to start all menu
titles and subtitles with alpha characters. If you start a title
with a number, EtherMenu may confuse an item number with any of
the numeric titles.

      Example:
      1: EtherShare Utilities
      2: 3270
      3: WordStar
      4: DOS Utilities

If you move the cursor to Selection 3 and press RETURN or type
"W", the submenu for WordStar will be displayed on the screen.
However, if you try to select WordStar by typing "3", the submenu
from 3270 (selection 2, which starts with 3) will be displayed on
the screen.

.h1;NOT ENOUGH BUFFERS TO CACHE THE FAT

If you see the above message when starting your standard mode
server, you must alter the ETHERSTD.BAT file. This file is
located in the \ETHERSHR subdirectory on your server.

Boot the server and select "Exit to DOS", change directories to
\ETHERSHR, and edit the ETHERSTD.BAT file using EDLIN, MED or
another editor of youR choice.

Change the line "CIOSYS 16" to read "CIOSYS 25" or just "CIOSYS".
This will change the number of buffers available for caching the
File Allocation Table (FAT) of your hard disk to the maximum of
25.

Reboot the server and select "Start the Standard Mode Server".
You should be able to begin standard mode operation with no
problem.

If you still receive the message, you may not be able to utilize
all the hard disk space you have attached to the server.

Our software requires that the entire FAT of the hard disk be
to "cached" via CIOSYS buffers in the first 64KB of memory. The
first 14KB of memory is used by other portions of our software,
leaving 5OKB available for caching the FAT. Each buffer of
CIOSYS takes 2KB of memory, thus, the maximum of 25 CIOSYS
buffers.

The amount of space required to cache the FAT of a hard disk is
dependent upon the sectors per cluster or allocation unit size
used by the disk. On a standard IBM disk, the sectors per
cluster size is 2KB. Some other brands of disks allow you to
manually change the sectors per cluster size, while still other
brands change the size automatically depending on the size of
partitions you create.

If your disk uses 2KB sectors per cluster, you will be able to
use 40 - 50MB of the disk space before running out of CIOSYS
buffers for caching the FAT. In order to use more disk space
than this on the network, you will need to change the sectors per
cluster or allocation unit size to a higher value. Consult your
hard disk vendor's manual or technical support group for
information on whether this value can be changed.

.h1;MEMORY BOARD WITH ETHERMAC
Please be advised that you need to use a memory expansion board
to run EtherMac on a 3Server that is running everything:

  896KB FOR
  Share
  Print
  Mail
  Backup
  AppleTalk

AppleTalk can be run in a 512KB machine if you aren't running
either Mail or Backup.

If you are running EtherBackup and do not have the memory
expansion board, you may rename the file 3BACKUP.COM to something
else. That leaves the software installed, but won't load BACKUP,
thus leaving memory free.

To do this:

 - Put the thumbwheel in position 2
 - Put the key in the TEST position
 - Press the RESET button
 - When the LCD displays " 3DOS Ver 2.11", go to a user station
 - Insert the system software diskette in drive A:
 - From the A > prompt, type " ECONSOLE LOAD"
 - You will get "REMOTE CONSOLE CONNECTED" and a C>> prompt
 - Change directories to \ETHERSHR (CD\ETHERSHR)
 - Rename the 3BACKUP.COM file to something else
    (rename 3BACKUP.COM 3BACKUP.BAK)
 - CTRL - C to exit econsole
 - Put the 3Server's thumbwheel back to position 0
 - Press the RESET button
 - Put the key in the OPERATE position
 - Watch the LCD as the server boots. You should NOT see the
    message "Loading Backup"

.h1;ETHERSTART WITH NEW PC's

IBM is calling their newest PC's "XT's". If you are using one
with EtherStart and no disk drive, you must set the XT's switches
for one drive. An error message will appear, prompting you to
press "F1 ". By pressing F1 the boot will be completed.

If you set an XT to zero drives, the XT goes into a continous
memory test.

If you set it for one drive (with EtherStart), you error out but
can continue by pressing the Fl key.

.h1;NETWORKED MICROSOFT WORD

If you are installing WORD on a 3Com EtherSeries network with
EtherShare software, version 2.2, 2.4, or 2.4. 1, you must ensure
that individual users' directories are placed in separate,
"private" EtherShare volumes. WORD itself can be installed in a
"public" volume. IN NO CASE SHOULD A "SHARED" VOLUME BE USED.

You can determine the access type of a volume by issuing the
EtherSeries command ES DIR/L. This command will show the name,
size, and access rights to all volumes you have linked. A
private volume will be listed as PRIV, a public volume as PUB,
and a shared volume as SHAR.

.h1;3SERVER TAPE BACKUP ECO

IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE!

As of October 1985, 3Server Tape Backup Systems are built with
ADAPTEC tape controller assemblies which no longer require SCSI
terminators. However, the existing 3Server Tape Backup
documentation refers to a SCSI terminator. Please ignore all
references to the SCSI terminator in the documentation. The
terminator is no longer required, is not shipped with the unit,
and in fact will not work with new 3Server Tape Backup Units.

.h1;RUNNING APPLETALK AND ETHERBACKUP ON YOUR 3SERVER

One 3Server can support both AppleTalk and EtherBackup
operations. If you plan to run both these applications on the
same 3Server, you should be aware of the following conditions:

1. Make sure there is enough memory in the 3Server. If you are
running EtherShare, EtherPrint, EtherMall, EtherBackup and
AppleTalk, you must add a memory expansion board to the 3Server.
This is only necessary if you are running all 5 modules.

2. EtherBackup and AppleTalk share the same DMA channel. The
3Server EtherBackup software includes a routine that
automatically checks to see if AppleTalk is In operation,
suspends it if it is, and reactivates AppleTalk when the backup
operation is completed.

The user running EtherMac will be able to continue working
within an application already started when EtherBackup was
invoked. However, if the user tries to save a document or exit
the application, he will receive a "bomb" message on the
Macintosh stating, "System error occurred. ID = 15" with the
option to "restart".

For this reason, all backup operations should be scheduled
during a time period when users will not be running EtherMac.
