Q. I tried to create a new user and got the message "Cannot
create user." What does this mean?

A. This message will appear in a couple of different situations:

1. If the hard disk on the server is full, or any single
expansion peripheral on the server is full. Each time you create
a new user, a subdirectory for the user is created on EACH disk
attached to the server. If the disk (drive C:) is full, or any of
the expansion peripherals are full, the system will not be able
to create this subdirectory and will return the error "cannot
create user".

2. If you installed an expansion peripheral and then physically
removed it, the software will not know it is gone. When you try
to create the user, it will attempt to make a subdirectory on the
expansion peripheral, find that the disk cannot be accessed and
return the error "cannot create user".

If you wish to remove an expansion peripheral, you must boot the
server, exit to DOS, and edit the file DRIVES. This file is in
the ETHERSHR subdirectory and can be edited with any text editor,
such as EDLIN. It contains information about the expansion
peripherals you have installed and looks something like this:

        C:\ethershr
        D:\ether
        E:\share

If you wish to remove physical drive E: from the network, just
delete the line referring to that drive. If you wish to remove
all references to expansion peripherals, you can delete the
entire DRIVES file.

Q. My 3Server keeps giving me errors when I try to backup. I can
create a tape log, so I know the system is working, but when I
try to do a backup, it says READ BACKUP LOG on the LCD and the
log says "tape operation took too long". What is wrong?

A. Clean the tape heads. Often people forget to do this. Tape
heads should be cleaned after every 8 hours of tape use. If you
are backing up multiple servers each day, you should clean the
tape heads frequently. A kit for this is available from Perfect
Data, (818) 998-2400. Order QIC-11 Drive Head Cleaning Kit, PN
102791-21. (See article in May 1985 issue.)

Q. I put a serial HP Laserjet printer on my PC server. It works
in Standard mode, but not in Dedicated. Why?

A. The HP Laserjet is only supported in Standard mode. The
previous version of EtherSeries, version 2.2, did not support any
serial devices. Version 2.4 added features only to Standard mode.
One of these features was support for a serial HP LaserJet
printer. If you wish to use it, you must leave your server in
Standard mode.
