3+ Version 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2.X to 1.3.1 Software Upgrade Instructions
=====================================================================

This document provides instructions for upgrading 3+ version 1.0, 1.1, or
1.2.X software on a 3Server, 3Server3 or PC server to version 1.3.1. This
package upgrades 3+Share (File, Print, and Name), 3+Backup, 3+Menus,
Locator, and optional services such as 3+Mail, 3+Remote, 3+Route, and
3+NetConnect. (This package only upgrades optional services; it does not
provide the entire product.) It also provides the 3+ for Macintosh
product.

This upgrade and its associated documentation are intended for resellers
and knowledgeable administrators.

NOTE: You cannot upgrade to release 1.3.1 by copying the new diskettes
over old diskettes.

If you need assistance with this upgrade, contact your network supplier.
You should read through these instructions before you begin so that you are
familiar with the process.

NOTE: To successfully complete this upgrade, follow the entire upgrade
process without stopping.

These upgrade instructions contain four major sections:

* Supplies to Have on Hand
Describes what supplies you will need to upgrade your server.

* Upgrading a 3Server or 3Server3 Server
Gives the steps to upgrade one of these 3Com servers.

* Upgrading a PC Server
Describes how to upgrade a PC server.

* After the Upgrade
Provides information on additional update processes you should complete.

Supplies to Have on Hand
========================

You must have the following supplies on hand before you begin the upgrade:

* Two or more 60 MB cartridge tapes

These tapes must be suitable for the kind of tape drive you have. If you
have expansion drives, you will need more tapes. Since you will be
performing two backups of your server, be sure to have enough tapes for
this process.

* One formatted 360 KB floppy diskette.

At least one diskette is required to save files from either a 3Server
server or a PC server.

* A 3+ version 1.3.1 Upgrade package and 1.3.X versions of any services you
may have on your server that are not included in this package, such as
3+Mail and 3+Route.

Upgrading a 3Server or 3Server3 Server
======================================

Upgrading a 3Server or 3Server3 server involves seven tasks:

Task 1: Gather Information
Task 2: Prepare the Server
Task 3: Establish a 3C Connection
Task 4: Back Up the Server
Task 5: Reformat the Hard Disk
Task 6: Install 3+ Version 1.3.1 Software
Task 7: Restore Files

Each task consists of a procedure you need to follow. To have a successful
upgrade, do every task, in the exact order they are presented.

Task 1: Gather Information

Because this upgrade involves reformatting the server's hard disk, you must
gather some information first to have it available for Tasks 4, 6 and 7.
This information includes a server configuration report, the size of each
partition on your server, sector and cluster sizes, and Start volume
configurations.

Server Configuration Report and Sector and Cluster Size Information
-------------------------------------------------------------------

The server configuration report records the configuration parameters for
all of the installed services. This report acts as a guide if the upgrade
requires memory allocation adjustments. Since you will be using the
3INSTALL program to create a server configuration report, you will also use
3INSTALL to obtain the server and cluster size information.

NOTE: 3+Share version 1.0 does not include the capability to create a
configuration report. To obtain the necessary information, do the
following:

Save the 3PLUS_ON.BAT file located in the \3PLUS\3CONFIG directory. You
will need the information on lines 142 and 227.

Save the CIOSYS.PRF and 3NAME.PRF files located in the \3ROOT directory.

1. Go to the sharename for C:\3PLUS\3CONFIG on the server's hard drive.

2. Type:

         3INSTALL [Return]

The 3+ Server Installation and Configuration screen is displayed.

3. Select option 1 to generate a server configuration report.

For complete information on generating a configuration report, refer to
the 3+ Administrator's Guide Volume I or the 3+Network Tuning Guide.

When you generate your first configuration report, 3INSTALL creates a file
called CONFDUMP.000 in the \3PLUS\3CONFIG subdirectory. Each time you
generate a report, a new CONFDUMP file is created and the filename
extension is incremented, for example, CONFDUMP.000, CONFDUMP.001, and so
forth.

After the report has been generated, the 3+ Server Installation and
Configuration screen is displayed.

4. Select option 2, Configure Parameters and Peripherals.

5. Highlight CIOSYS and type C for "change."

6. Select option 3, Adjust CIOSYS Buffer Pools.

7. Write down the cluster and sector information for all server partitions.

8. Press [Ctrl]+A twice.

9. Type Q for Quit.

10. Exit to DOS.

11. Print the server configuration report, and keep it handy.

Disk Partition Information
--------------------------

You will need to know the size of each partition on your server's hard
disk. To get this information, type:

         3f stat [Return]

Either save this information to a file and print it or write down the
information.

Start Volume Information
------------------------

If you made any changes to the standard Start volumes on your server, save
the changed files so you can add them to the new Start volumes that are
created when you upgrade. You can also print copies of each changed file.

Task 2: Prepare the Server
===========================

1. Have all users log out from the server you intend to upgrade.

2. Log in as the server-user on the server you intend to upgrade.

3. To display the server's shared printers, type:

         3p dir [Return]

4. Use the 3P UNSHARE command to unshare all of the server's shared
printers.

NOTE: If you are upgrading from 3+Share version 1.0, unshare the
sharename for C:\3PLUS\NAME if it exists.

5. Log out as the server-user.

6. Log in as the admin.

7. Shut down the 3+ services on the server you are upgrading, shutting down
3+Name last.

8. Log out.

Task 3: Establish a 3C Connection
=================================

1. Set the toggle switch on the server to Test.

2. Prepare the 3Server or 3Server3 server to make a 3C connection.

* On Ethernet networks, set the thumbwheel switch
 to 4.

* On token ring networks, set the thumbwheel switch to 8.

3. Press the Reset button.

4. Insert the 3+ version 1.3.1 System Software #1 diskette (part number
2093-09) into drive A: of your netstation.

5. At the A:\> prompt, type:

         3c start [Return]

You should see this message on your workstation:

Waiting for start request...Start request from:
         02608CXXXXXX OK (Y/N)?

The last six numbers displayed on the server's LCD should match the last
six numbers in the message. If they do not, type N. You will see some
more numbers.  Continue to type N until you see the correct network number;
then go on to step 6.

6. Type Y but do not press [Return].

NOTE: If you press [Return] you will lose your 3C connection.

7. When the A:\>> prompt appears, remove the System Software #1 diskette.

8. Insert a formatted 360 KB diskette into drive A:.

9. Copy the following files to this diskette:

         C:\3PLUS\3SHARE\SHRLIST
         C:\3PLUS\S_NAME
         C:\3PLUS\3NAME\NS_DOM.*

NOTE: If you are running 3+ version 1.0 software you will find the
NS_DOM files in \3PLUS\NAME instead of \3PLUS\3NAME. Before you perform
task 4 to back up your server, create a subdirectory under 3PLUS called
3NAME and copy all files from \3PLUS\NAME to \3PLUS\3NAME.

10. Remove the diskette and save it for task 4, step 15.

Task 4: Back Up the Server
===========================

Because you will be reformatting your hard disk, you need to back up all
the data files. The following procedure assumes that a tape drive is
accessible from the server you are backing up. If it is not, see the
section "If You Do Not Have a Local Tape Drive" after this procedure for
general information on backing up a server without a local tape drive.

The following task requires that you perform two backups: one backup of the
files on the server and expansion unit, and the other backup of only the
files on the server. The first backup procedure backs up all server files
as they currently exist. You then delete some files (that you will replace
with upgraded files later in task 6), and then back up your server files
again. This double backup process ensures that you can either proceed with
the rest of the upgrade or, if necessary, restore your server to its
original condition.

NOTE: You must also have the original software diskettes to restore the
server to its original condition.

Make sure that you have enough tapes on hand to do both backups before you
proceed with this task. If you do not, you can stop the upgrade process at
this point. Obtain additional tapes and then perform this task.

1. Insert the 3+Backup #2 (version 1.3.2, part number 4560-02) diskette
into drive A:.

2. Insert one of your blank 60 MB tapes into the tape drive.

3. Type:

         3bmendos [Return]

 The Backup menu is displayed.

4. Select Backup and press [Return].

 The Backup form is displayed.

5. Press [Ctrl]+[Return].

This step bypasses the confirmation messages and starts a full backup of
your server. During the backup you may be prompted to insert and remove
more than one tape.

6. When the backup is finished, select Tape Directory and press [Return].

The Tape Directory menu is displayed.

7. Press [Ctrl]+[Return].

This creates a full tape directory called TAPE_LOG located in
C:\3PLUS\3BACKUP.

8. When the tape directory process is complete, select Quit and press
[Return].

 This message is displayed:

Are you sure you want to exit 3+Backup (Y/N)?

9. Type Y and press [Return].

 The A:>> prompt is displayed.

10. Type:

         type c:\3plus\3backup\stat_log [Return]

 The status log is displayed.

11. Look for the message indicating that the backup was completed
successfully.

If there is no message indicating that the backup was successful, go back
to step 3 and begin again.

12. At the A:>> prompt, type:

         c:\3plus\3backup\tape_log [Return]

A list of the files backed up to the tape is displayed. If no files are
displayed, return to step 3 and do the backup again. You should have a
complete backup of your server before you proceed.

13. Remove the tape and store it in a safe place.

Label this tape so that you will know it is a complete backup of your
server. You will not use this tape to restore your server in task 7 after
you have installed 3+ version 1.3.1 software. You will have the tape in
case you need to restore your server without completing the upgrade.

14. Use the DOS DEL command to remove the files in the following
directories :

         C:\
         C:\3ROOT
         C:\3UTIL
         C:\3PLUS
         C:\3PLUS\3CONFIG

NOTE: If you have 3+Start installed, you will also need to delete the
files in the following directories:

         C:\3PLUS\3START
         C:\3PLUS\3START\STARTVOL

15. Remove the 3+Backup #2 diskette version 1.3.2 and replace it with the
diskette onto which you copied the S_NAME and NS_DOM.XXX files in task 3,
step 9.

16. Type:

         copy s_name c:\3plus [Return]

17. Type:

         set comspec=a:\command.com [Return]

You have now adjusted some files in preparation for a backup of your
server.

18. Remove the diskette and replace it with the 3+Backup #2 diskette
version 1.3.2 .

19. Insert the second blank 60 MB tape into the tape drive.

20. Type:

         3bmendos [Return]

 The Backup menu is displayed.

21. Select Backup and press [Return].

 The Backup form is displayed.

22. When you are prompted for the first partition, type C and press
[Return].

If you do not have any expansion drives on your server, accept the
default, "*" and skip to step 24.

NOTE: If you have more than 60 MB of data on your server, you will be
prompted to insert and remove more than one tape.

23. Type the letter that corresponds to the last partition on the server's
hard disk.

24. Press [Ctrl]+[Return].

3+Backup backs up the files on your server without displaying the
confirmation messages.

25. When the backup is finished, select Tape Directory and press [Return].

The Tape Directory menu is displayued.

26. Press [Ctrl]+[Return].

This creates a full tape directory called TAPE_LOG on C:\3PLUS\3BACKUP.

27. When the tape directory process is complete, select Quit and press
[Return].

 This message is displayed:

Are you sure you want to exit 3+Backup (Y/N)?

28. Remove the 3+Backup #2 diskette and replace it with the System Software
#1 diskette version 1.3.1.

29. Type Y and press [Return].

 The A:\>> prompt is displayed.

30. Type:

         type c:\3plus\3backup\stat_log [Return]

 The status log is displayed.

31. Look for the message indicating that the backup was completed
successfully.

If there is no message indicating that the backup was successful, go back
to step 18 and begin again.

32. At the A:>> prompt, type:

         type c:\3plus\3backup\tape_log [Return]

A list of the files backed up to the tape is displayed. If no files are
displayed, return to step 18 and do the backup again. You should have a
complete backup of your server before you go to the next task.

33. Remove the tape and store it in a safe place.

Be sure to label this tape so that you can distinguish it from the full
backup you made earlier in this task. You will use this tape again to
restore files in task 7.

If You Do Not Have a Local Tape Drive
=====================================

If your server does not have a local tape drive, you will need to use one
of the following processes to perform two backups of your server.

         C:\3UTIL
         C:\3PLUS
         C:\3PLUS\3CONFIG

When you delete the \3PLUS\3NAME\NS_DOM.X and \3ROOT\STATUS files the
following error message is displayed:

Sharing Violation Error. Abort, Retry, Fail?

This is not a problem. Type F for Fail to continue with the deletions.

NOTE: If you have 3+Start installed, you will also need to delete the
files in the following directories:

         C:\3PLUS\3START
         C:\3PLUS\3START\STARTVOL

When you delete the \3PLUS\3NAME\NS_DOM.X and \3ROOT\STATUS files the
following error message is displayed:

Sharing Violation Error. Abort, Retry, Fail?

This is not a problem. Type F for Fail to continue with the deletions.

NOTE: If you have 3+Start installed, you will also need to delete the
files in the following directories:

         C:\3PLUS\3START
         C:\3PLUS\3START\STARTVOL

9. Back up files again to floppy diskettes.

You will use this set of diskettes to restore your server in task 7.

10. Shut down the server.

Creating Server Partition Sharenames
====================================

The sharename should be in the form of drive ID$, for example, C$. Use the
following procedure to share the root directory:

1. Log in as the server-user.

2. Share a subdirectory under the root directory.

If you already have a sharename in the root directory, you can skip this
step. 3Com recommends you use the format in the following example to
create a sharename for each partition on your server:

         3F SHARE DriveC=C:\DriveC /r
         (/r for read)

3. Share a subdirectory from the shared subdirectory in step 2 with three
backslashes (\\\) appended to it.

For example, to share the subdirectory DriveC on drive C: with the
password PSWD:

         3F SHARE C$=C:\DriveC\\\ /pass=PSWD /r

Task 5: Reformat the Hard Disk
===============================

The next task is to reformat the hard disk before installing the new
software. In order to perform this task, you must have a console
connection to the server.

NOTE: Make sure you have all of your configuration information on hand
(see Task 1) and backup tapes (see task 4) BEFORE you proceed with this
task. When you reformat the hard disk, all configuration information and

these files.

6. Install each service and perform the necessary tuning.

7. Copy the files you saved on a diskette in step 3 onto the PC server's
hard disk.

8. Reboot the server.

After the Upgrade
=================

Once you have completed the basic upgrade for either a 3Com server or PC
server, you need to upgrade netstations and reinstall Start configurations.

Creating Netstation Diskettes
=============================

You should create new netstation startup diskettes for each station on the
network using the MAKEDISK utility (MAKEDISK.EXE) now located in the \APPS
directory.

Create a new NetBIOS netstation diskette for each netstation that currently
uses a NetBIOS netstation diskette that will run a NetBIOS application.
Refer to the NetBIOS Supplement for information on creating NetBIOS
netstation diskettes.

After you create a new netstation diskette, incorporate any customized
elements from your old startup diskette's AUTOEXEC.BAT, START.BAT, and
CONFIG.SYS files into the corresponding files of the new netstation
diskette. If you have other programs or files on the old netstation
diskette, you can copy them to the new 1.3.1 netstation diskette.

NOTE: If there are any other copies of 3F, 3N, 3P, 3B, LOGIN, LOGOUT,
and 3NB, or network drivers in other directories or on other netstation
diskettes, be sure to upgrade them with the 1.3.1 versions for best
results.

Reinstalling Start Configurations
=================================

If you saved any custom Start configurations, reinstall those in the new
Start volumes.
