Check Your LAN Manager System
===================================================
Some network systems running LAN Manager 1.1 must be upgraded to support
this product. Before you install 3+Open TCP NetBIOS on a 3+Open LAN
Manager server or netstation, run the Chklm program.

The Chklm program confirms that your 3+Open LAN Manager system supports
this product.

1.Start up the 3+Open LAN Manager server or netstation on which you want to
install 3+Open TCP NetBIOS.

2. Log in as an Admin on that server or netstation.

   NOTE: If the server is a 3Server/400 or 3Server/500, log in as an
   Admin from a remote netstation. Then after you log in, use the NET
   ADMIN, NET SHARE and NET USE commands to connect to the 3Server's root
   directory.  For example:

         c: net admin \\servername /c  [Return]
         [\\servername] net share croot c:\ [Return]
         [\\servername] exit   [Return]
         c: net use g: \\servername\croot [Return]

3. Insert the LAN Manager Server #1 with TCP diskette into drive A of the
server or netstation where you are logged in.

4. Copy the CHKLM.EXE file from the LAN Manager Server #1 with TCP diskette
to the drive containing the 3+Open LAN Manager system you want to check.

5. Move to the drive where 3+Open LAN Manager is installed.

6. Run the Chklm program.

* In most cases, all you have to do is type:

         chklm  [Return]

 This will work if the \3OPEN directory (containing the 3+Open LAN Manager
directories and files) is located in the root directory.

* If the \3OPEN directory is located anywhere other than the root
directory, type:

         chklm <pathname>  [Return]

 where <pathname> is the directory pathname to the \3OPEN directory. For
example, if the path to your LAN Manager software is C:\VICDIR\3OPEN,
type:

         chklm \vicdir  [Return]

 You will receive a message stating whether or not your LAN Manager system
must be upgraded.

7. If your 3+Open LAN Manager system does not need upgrading, install
3+Open TCP NetBIOS. See the 3+Open TCP NetBIOS Administrator Guide.

8. If your 3+Open LAN Manager system has to be upgraded:

a. Call 1-800-NET-3COM (ext. 333) to obtain a free 3+Open Version 1.1
Maintenance Update package.

b. Install 3+Open TCP NetBIOS . See the 3+Open TCP Net BIOS Administrator
Guide.

c. Then use the 3+Open Maintenance Version 1.1 Maintenance Update package
to upgrade 3+Open LAN Manager.

Installing 3+Open TCP NetBIOS on a 3Com Server
==============================================
Use the following procedure to install 3+Open TCP NetBIOS on a 3Server/400
or 3Server/500. Before you can begin this procedure you must have Admin
rights to that server on which you are installing 3+Open TCP Net BIOS.

1. If 3+Open LAN Manager is not already installed on the target server,
use the 3+Open LAN Manager Installation tape to install it.

 See the 3+Open for 3Servers Installation and Setup Guide for details.

2. Check the 3+Open LAN Manager system on the 3Server as described in
"Check Your LAN Manager System" earlier in these release notes.

* If your system does not need upgrading, continue to step 3.

* If your system needs upgrading, follow the instructions (in Step 8 of
"Check Your LAN Manager System') for obtaining an upgrade. Then upgrade
3+Open LAN Manager before continuing.

3. Insert the DOS Drivers with TCP diskette in drive A of the netstation
you are using to access the server.

4. Use the NET USE command to access the root directory of the server.

 For example, type:

         net use g: \\servername\c$ [Return]

5. Use the DOS XCOPY command to copy the \3OPEN\DOSDRV directory on the DOS
Drivers with TCP diskette to the \3OPEN\DOSDRV directory on the server.

         For example, type:

         xcopy a:\3open\dosdrv g:\3open\dosdrv /s /v
         [Return]

6. Remove the DOS Drivers with TCP diskette from drive A and insert the
OS/2 Drivers with TCP diskette.

7. Use the DOS XCOPY command to copy the \3OPEN\OS2DRV directory on the
OS/2 Drivers with TCP diskette to the \3OPEN\OS2DRV directory on the
server.

         For example, type:

         xcopy a:\3open\os2drv g:\3open\os2drv /s /v
         [Return]

8. Insert the LAN Server #1 with TCP diskette in drive A of the netstation
you are using to access the server.

9. Copy the NETSETUP.EXE file from the root directory of the LAN Server #1
with TCP diskette to the \3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\NETPROG directory on the
server.

         For example, type:

         copy a:\netsetup.exe g:\3open\server\lanman\netprog
         [Return]

10. Make a 3C connection to the server.

 See the 3+Open for 3Servers Installation and Setup Guide for details.

11. When the 3C connection is established, go to the
         \3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\NETPROG directory on drive C.

12. Run the Netsetup program.

 The main menu is displayed.

13. Select Modify configuration settings.

14. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Installing 3+Open TCP NetBIOS on a 3Station

The information in this section applies to procedures described in
"Installing TCP NetBIOS on a 3Station" in Chapter 2 of the 3+Open TCP
NetBIOS Administrator's Guide.

TCP Start Volume
3+Open TCP NetBIOS Administrator's  Guide, p. 2-22, 2-27
========================================================
The sample TCP Start volume (3STCP) that is described in "About the Private
Start Volume" in Chapter 2, is not available for this version of 3+Open
TCP NetBIOS .

Edits to CONFIG.SYS
3+Open TCP NetBIOS Administrator's Guide, p. 2-26
=================================================
Before you copy the TCP NetBIOS software from the TCP NetBIOS Start Master
diskette to your private Start volume (as described in "Task 3: Copying TCP
NetBIOS Software to Your Private Start Volume"), you must make one change
to the CONFIG.SYS file on that diskette.

 In the TCP NetBIOS Start Master diskette's CONFIG.SYS, change the
following line:

         device=c:\driver.lod c:\3open\doswksta\lanman\drivers\tcpdrv.dos

         to

         device=c:\3open\doswksta\lanman\drivers\tcpdrv.dos

Windows 3.0
===========
If you want to run Microsoft Windows 3.0 with 3+Open LAN Manager and 3+Open
TCP NetBIOS loaded into enhanced memory on a 386-based DOS netstation, you
must add one parameter to the the Windows SYSTEM.INI file.

With a text editor, open the Windows SYSTEM.INI file and add the following
parameter and value to the [386Enh] section:

         TimeCriticalSection = 55

TCP and XNS
===========
If you have installed dual TCP and XNS protocols (labeled "TCP and XNS" in
the Netsetup program) on an OS/2 netstation, running a simple NET VIEW
command from that netstation will list only the XNS servers on the network.

You can still view the resources of an individual TCP server on the network
by specifying that server's name after the NETVIEW command. Use the
following syntax:

         netview \\<servername>

where <servername> is the name of the TCP server that you want to view.
