Installing Memory Expansion Board Software Release Note
Part No. 5823-02

This release note contains changes to the 3Server386 Memory Expansion Board
Installation Guide.
Installing Memory Expansion Board Software on a 3+Open version. 1.1 or
Later System
=====================================================================
The "Using 3+Open Software" section in the 3Server386 Memory Expansion
Board Installation Guide instructs the user to run NETSETUP to change the
configuration information in CMOS after installing expansion memory. NETSETUP
no longer prompts for that information and you do not need to run NETSETUP.
No further setup for memory expansion boards is required for 3+Open.

Installing Memory Expansion Board Software on 3+ version. 1.3 or Earlier
Systems
=====================================================================
Before using the 3Server386 Memory Expansion Board on a system running 3+
version 1.3 or earlier network software, you must install the expanded
memory management software on the 3Server386 network server in which the board
is to be installed. This software is included in the package with the
3Server386 Memory Expansion Board.

Your 3Server386 Memory Expansion Board package includes:

- 3Server386 Memory Expansion Board
- Expanded Memory Manager (EMM) diskettes (5-1/4 inch and 3-1/2 inch)
- 3Server386 Memory Expansion Board Installation Guide
- This document

NOTE: If the server in which you are installing the Memory Expansion
Board is running 3+ version 1.3.1 or later, or 3+Open network software,
you do not need this release note or the Expanded Memory Manager diskettes
that come with the memory board.

Suggested Progression of Tasks
==============================
We suggest the following sequence of events when installing your 3Server386
Memory Expansion Board:

-Install the expanded memory management software, as described in this
 document.

- Install the expansion board and reinitialize the 3S/400 system, as
described in the 3Server386 Memory Expansion Board Installation Guide.

- Use the 3OPT program to check that CIOSYS is configured to use all
  available EMS memory.

NOTE: Do not adjust the CIOSYS buffer pool allocation after installing
the Memory Expansion Board. When the server is restarted after the memory
board is installed, the 3+ server software automatically redistributes any
available memory amongst the CIOSYS buffer pools.

Updating the Server Software
============================
The following section explains how to update the 3S/400 software to use the
expanded memory management software that came with your 3Server386 Memory
Expansion Board.

Starting the 3Server386 from a Netstation (3C START)
You access to the server's disk through a 3C console connection. This
section describes how to use the 3C START command to create a console
connection between the 3Server386 and a netstation.

1.Start the 3Server386 with the MODE switch in the maintenance (middle)
position and the BOOT switch set to 1 (for Ethernet) or 2 (for token ring).

2. Start your netstation using 3+ netstation startup software.

You can use 3+ netstation startup software (also known as 3+ boot disk)
either from a diskette or from your netstation's hard disk.

3. Insert the 3+ System Software #1 diskette in drive A: of your
netstation.

This diskette did not come in the Memory Expansion Board package. The 3+
System Software #1 diskette came with the 3S/400 and contains the 3C
 program.

4. Type 3C START and press [Return].

After a few seconds, the following prompt appears on your screen:

 Waiting for Start Request
 Request: <network address> OK (Y/N)?

The last six digits of the <network address> should match the network
address of the server you are trying to start. This address is displayed
on the server's LCD when you start the server in maintenance mode.

5. Type Y (for yes) if the address displayed matches the address of the
server you are starting. Type N (for no) if the addresses do not match. When
the correct address is displayed, type Y.

On large networks with multiple servers, the address of another server
could be displayed during this process. Therefore, it is important for you
to compare the address displayed with the address of the server you want to
start. Type N until the correct address is displayed. Then type Y.

3C then displays the message, "Start in progress." When the startup
process is complete, the active-console prompt appears on your screen:

 A:\>>

The next section describes how to copy the expanded memory management
software to the server's disk

Copying 3EMM.SYS

CAUTION: Do not copy the 3EMM.SYS file to the server disk unless the
server is running 3+ version 1.3 or earlier network software. Do not copy
the file to servers running 3+ version 1.3.1 or later, or 3+Open network
software.

1.Make sure the Expanded Memory Manager (EMM) diskette is in the
netstation's A drive.

2. At the active-console prompt type:

A:\>>copy 3emm.sys c:\3drivers [Return]

When you see the copy-confirmation message, the installation is complete.

3. Press [Ctrll]+Q to leave the 3C program.

4. Turn off the 3Server386 before installing the memory board.

Making the Most of Expanded Memory
==================================
After installing 3EMM.SYS, follow the instructions in the 3Server386 Memory
Expansion Board Installation Guide to install the board and reinitialize
the 3S/400 system.

IMPORTANT: Once you have installed the memory board, check the CIOSYS
configuration screen to make sure that the number for "EMS to be used by
CIOSYS" matches the number for "EMS available." Access the CIOSYS
configuration screen through the 3OPT network tuning program. See the 3+
Network Tuning Guide for instructions on using 3OPT.
