Notice for the 3Server386 (Model 3S/400)

Please read the following before you install the 3+ or 3+Open network
operating system on your new 3Server386 network server.

3+Backup Service
================
This model of the 3Server386 (3S/400) does not include a tape drive.
Consequently, to install the network operating system from the tape
cartridge on which it is shipped, you must use the tape drive in another
network server and copy the operating system across the network. This
procedure is documented in the 3+ Tape Installation Guide for the 3+
network operating system and in the 3+Open for 3Servers Installation and
Setup Guide for the 3+Open network operating system.

If the server with the tape drive is running 3+, you will use the 3+Backup
service to perform the transfer. In doing so, you should be aware of the
following problem that has been encountered with 3+Backup. If you cancel a
3+Backup command while it is running, or 3+Backup stops of its own accord
because of a problem with a tape cartridge or the program itself, you may
not be able to repeat the command. If you try, you may see the message
"Process in progress" appear on the netstation screen. However, checking
the status of 3+Backup with the 3B STAT command will show no command in
progress.

To remedy the problem, you must reset the server containing the tape drive,
wait five minutes after it has completed its diagnostics, and then retry
the backup command.

Corrections to the 3+ Tape Installation Guide
=============================================
If you are installing 3+, please be aware of the following inaccuracies in
the 3+ Tape Installation Guide.

1. Page 2-25, step 7
This step erroneously states that you will see the system prompt (for
example, E:) reappear after the network operating system is transferred
onto the new server. Actually, the system prompt reappears immediately
after you issue the command.

The easiest way for you to monitor the progress of the transfer is to
watch the messages on the LCD of the server with the tape drive. The LCD
will first display "Preparing tape" as the server rewinds the tape to
ensure the correct tension. Then it displays the message "Megabytes" and a
number, which is incremented as the files are copied from the tape to the
new server.

When all of the 3+ network operating files are copied onto the new server,
you will see the LCD return to its normal display of the server's name and
the date and time.

2. Page 2-26, step 8
Again, as with #1, this step erroneously states that the system prompt
will reappear after the disk images are copied onto the server. To monitor
the progress of the transfer, watch the LCD of the server with the tape
drive.

3. Page 2-29, step 7
Step 7 should read as follows:

7. Set the BOOT switch on the new 3Server386 to 0 for normal operations.
