3+Open Version 1.1 Software Upgrade Instructions
Part Number 5341-00

12/13/89

3+Open Version 1.1 Software
Upgrade Instructions
--------------------

These instructions tell you how to upgrade the software on your network
servers and netstations from 3+Open version 1.0 software to 3+Open version
1.1. You can also upgrade 3Com value-added services previously installed
with version 1.0.

You must have installed 3+Open version 1.0 software before upgrading to
3+Open version 1.1 software. When you upgrade to 3+Open version 1.1, most
files are completely replaced. Directories created with version 1.0 will
still exist after the upgrade has been performed.

NOTE: Reformatting the hard disk is not required for this upgrade.

This upgrade and the upgrade instructions are intended for persons familiar
with MS OS/2 and 3+Open. Read through these instructions and the 3+Open
LAN Manager 1.1 Release Notes, included in this upgrade package, before you
begin the upgrade to familiarize yourself with the process. It is crucial
to follow the instructions carefully.

Along with these upgrade instructions and release notes, you will need to
refer to the 3+Open LAN Manager Installation and Setup Guide. If you need
assistance with this upgrade, contact your network supplier.

Procedures for Upgrading
------------------------

Upgrading a network server and netstations to 3+Open version 1.1 software
involves these main procedures:

- Making copies of all the diskettes in your upgrade package.

- Shutting down and backing up the server and netstation hard disks.

- Printing copies of certain version 1.0 files and recording network
information that may be needed after upgrading.

- Upgrading 3+Open LAN Manager software and optional services on all
        servers and netstations.

Additional procedures that apply to some system configurations are
described at the end of these upgrade instructions. They include:

- Updating existing netstation startup diskettes for each netstation.

You may also need to adjust memory allocations and fine-tune
network parameters using the 3+Open LAN Manager 1.1 Release Notes.

Memory Requirements
-------------------

Before you begin the upgrade, make sure the system meets the memory
requirements for 3+Open version 1.1 software. Refer to the 3+Open LAN
Manager 1.1 Release Notes for complete information on memory requirements.

Copying Diskettes
-----------------

Make a copy of each diskette in the upgrade package. Be sure to put the
original upgrade diskettes in a safe place and use the copies to upgrade
your network.

Backing Up Your Server
----------------------

For PC servers, use your normal backup method.

NOTE: Be sure you have a valid backup of your system before starting the
upgrade procedure. To ensure that you have a valid backup, create a full
tape directory of your backup before proceeding.

Printing Configuration Files and Recording Network Information
--------------------------------------------------------------

Your current server configuration files serve as a guide in case the
upgrade requires memory allocation adjustments and you need to reconfigure
and fine tune network parameters after the upgrade. Print copies of the
following files: CONFIG.OS2, CONFIG.SYS, STARTUP.CMD, PROTOCOL.INI, and
LANMAN.INI.

NOTE: 3+Open version 1.1 software has new guidelines for memory and
parameter configurations. Refer to the 3+Open LAN Manger 1.1 Release Notes
first for information on customizing your configuration.

3Com recommends that you run Netsetup, choose Display configuration
settings, and record the servername and any network configurations as you
will use them during the upgrade. You should also note the network number
on the LAN Manager Server #1 diskette.

When you have printed copies of your configuration files, you are ready to
perform the upgrade process. For information on upgrading netstations,
refer to the appropriate section at the end of these instructions.

Upgrading a PC Server to 3+Open Version 1.1 Software
-----------------------------------------------------

This section explains how to upgrade a PC server to 3+Open version 1.1
software from 3+Open version 1.0. Refer to the 3+Open LAN Manager
Installation and Setup Guide during this upgrade.

During the upgrade process, certain files are saved (copied to a temporary
directory called OS2.000), and certain others are saved and restored after
the upgrade has been completed. Do the upgrade by performing these steps:

- Upgrade 3+Open LAN Manager software.

- Upgrade 3+Open services.

- Tune configuration parameters, if necessary.

NOTE: If you are upgrading a dedicated PC server, it is
recommended that you change (modify) the server from a dedicated
server to a concurrent server before performing the upgrade. Use
Netsetup version 1.0, and select Modify to change the server mode
from dedicated to concurrent. After completing the upgrade, you
can modify the server back to dedicated mode.

Follow these specific steps to upgrade 3+Open LAN Manager and 3+Open
services on your PC server:

NOTE: If you are running the 3+Open Internet service you must disable it
via 3SIS before beginning these procedures.

1. Stop the disk cache.

You can stop the disk cache by typing:

        c: cache /stop

2. Stop the server.

        To stop the server, type:

        net stop rdr

Answer each of the questions when prompted, to force the server to
        stop.

3. Rename the 3STARTUP.CMD file.

Rename the file by typing the following from the \3OPEN directory:

        rename 3startup.cmd 3startup.sav

4. Insert the LAN Manager Server #1 Version 1.1 diskette in drive A
and type the following at the A prompt:

        netsetup

The 3+Open LAN Manager portion of the upgrade is like an
installation except that you choose the Upgrade option instead of
        the Install option.

5. Select the Upgrade option.

Follow the prompts. Netsetup shows previous selections as
defaults, except that you should enter the network number you made
note of earlier. This is the same network number used for version
        1.0.

6. Restart the server.

Your server now has an upgraded version of 3+Open LAN Manager software.
You must now perform the services upgrade for this server. You must
perform the following steps even if no services are installed on your
server.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to start 3+Open services at this point in the
upgrade. Unpredictable results can occur.

7. Insert the Services Upgrade Version 1.1 diskette into drive A.

Use drive A of your concurrent or dedicated server.

8. Log onto the server to be upgraded using Admin privileges.

9. Rename the 3STARTUP.SAV file to the original name.

You can rename (restore) the saved file to its original name by
typing the following at the \3OPEN directory:

        rename 3startup.sav 3startup.cmd

10. Start the 3SIS program from the A prompt by typing:

        3sis

Follow the prompts within the 3SIS program and select the server to
be upgraded. Refer to the on-line help if you have questions.

11. Select Install a Service from the Operation menu.

12. Select 3+Open Services 1.1 Upgrade from the Install Service menu.

3SIS detects which 3+Open services have been previously installed
on your server and automatically updates each of them to version
        1.1.

13. If you disabled 3+Open Internet, you must enable it now via 3SIS.

14. Exit from 3SIS.

15. Tune the parameter values in the LANMAN.INI and PROTOCOL.INI files.

Refer to the 3+Open LAN Manager 1.1 Release Notes and services
documentation for information on recommended values for using
services with the 1.1 release. Proper tuning is critical to the
correct operation of services for the 3+Open 1.1 release.

NOTE: Unless otherwise instructed by the 3+Open LAN Manager 1.1
Release Notes or services documentation, four other parameter
values in the LANMAN.INI file should be set as follows:

        In the Workstation section:

        maxcmds = 32
        maxthreads = 20
        maxwrkcache = 64

        In the Server section:

        numfiletasks = 6

16. Reboot the server to make your changes effective.

You have now completed the upgrade process for a PC server. Reboot your
server when you are ready to start 3+Open services.

NOTE: The services upgrade also upgrades client-side software for 3+Open
Mail and 3+Open Name located in the \APPS\DOSAPPS or \APPS\OS2APPS
directories. Link your netstations to those directories and download the
upgraded software.

For information on upgrading your netstations, refer to the appropriate
section later in these instructions.

To take advantage of the new options and features of 3+Open version 1.1
software with DPA, create new netstation startup diskettes for each
netstation.

Restarting the Upgrade Process
------------------------------

If you need to restart the upgrade procedure while upgrading 3+Open LAN
Manager software, begin again with step 4.

If your system cannot be recovered by restarting the upgrade, you can, as a
last resort, restore your version 1.0 backed-up files and begin the upgrade
process again.

Upgrading OS/2 Netstation Hard Disks
------------------------------------

After the server is upgraded to 3+Open version 1.1 software, you can link
OS/2 netstations to it. Follow the procedures for installing LAN Manager
software on netstations in the 3+Open LAN Manager Installation and Setup
Guide.

NOTE: When you run Netsetup, select Upgrade instead of Install.

After upgrading, you will need to use a text editor to make some
modifications to the LANMAN.INI and PROTOCOL.INI files.

LANMAN.INI Parameters
---------------------

Make sure the following parameter under the Workstation section of the
LANMAN.INI file has this entry:

maxwrkcache = 64

Add the following section after the Services section in the LANMAN.INI
file:

[locator]
numnodes = 100
numnames = 500

PROTOCOL.INI Parameters
-----------------------

Make sure the following parameters in the PROTOCOL.INI file have these
entries:

maxremmap = 10

maxlclmap= 10

Insert the following line after the MAXLCLMAP parameter:

rsesstimeout= 1200

DOS Basic Netstation Diskettes

------------------------------
To upgrade DOS Basic netstation diskettes, follow the procedures for
installing 3+Open LAN Manager on netstations in the 3+Open LAN Manager
Installation and Setup Guide. These actions will create a new startup
diskette. Repeat the procedure for each startup diskette needed.

NOTE: When you run Netsetup, select Upgrade instead of Install. You
cannot upgrade a Basic netstation to an Enhanced netstation by selecting
the Upgrade option.

Upgrading DOS Enhanced Netstation Diskettes
-------------------------------------------

After the server is upgraded to 3+Open version 1.1 software, you can link
DOS netstations to it. Follow the procedures for installing LAN Manager
software on netstations in the 3+Open LAN Manager Installation and Setup
Guide.
