3+Menus "How To" Guide
Release Notes
(3+Menus Version 1.2)

These release notes describe new features and enhancements in version
1.2 of 3+Menus. In addition, new error messages are listed and
explained.

New Features

The new features in version 1.2 allow you to perform the following
functions using 3+Menus:

 Log in to the network
 Log out of the network
Edit a selected file using the /Edit command
Get user status information by pressing [F3]

To log in:

1. The Log In item appears on the Main menu only if you are running
3+Menus from a local drive. Select the Log In item by pressing L, or
highlight the Log In item using the Up/Down Arrow key and press
[Return].

2. If you have a password, type it in the form that appears.

Caution: The password will appear on the form.

Press [Return] to accept the password and another [Return] to accept
the form.

To log out:

1. The Log Out item appears on the Main menu if you are logged in to
the network. Select the Log Out item by pressing L, or highlight the
item using the Up/Down Arrow key and press [Return].

2. If you loaded 3+Menus from a network drive, a Log Out form appears.
On the form, indicate the default drive you want to use after logging
out. This should be a physical drive or a 3+Start drive, because the
network drives will no longer be valid drives.

3. Press [Ctrl]+[Return] or [Return]+[Return] to accept the form.

4. A message appears asking you to confirm that you want to log out.
Type Y.
This exits you to the drive designated and the DOS prompt appears.

If you have loaded 3+Menus from a local drive, logging out will return
you to 3+Menus and the Log Out item will change to Log In.

To use the Edit command:

To use this command, an editor must be specified in your PROFILE.SYS
file.

1. Starting with the Directories and Files item in the Main menu,
open the pertinent subdirectories to display the name of the file that
you want to edit.

2. Move the cursor to the filename.

3. Press /Edit.

To display user status:

1. Press [F3] to display user status. If you are logged in to the
network, information regarding your network user capabilities, home
server, and local machine name appear. If you are not logged in, only
the machine name, if this exists, appears.

2. Press any key to exit the User Status information.

Enhancements

This section explains enhancements in version 1.2 of 3+Menus. The
explanations replace those in the 3+Menus "How To" Guide pages
indicated. We suggest that you affix a Remember to check the Release
Notes sticker (provided with these release notes for your convenience)
on these pages to remind you that new information supersedes that
found in the guide.

Exit to DOS

Page 2-12: See [F5] in Table 2-8

[F5] exits to DOS after removing part of 3+Menus from memory.

[Shift]+[F5] exits to DOS without removing part of 3+Menus from
memory. Re-entering 3+Menus after a [Shift]+[F5] is usually faster
than after an [F5] (unless 3+Menus had to unload part of itself to
free up enough memory to invoke DOS).

Accessing 3+Menus

Page 2-13: Delete first Note

You can access 3+Menus from any network server on which it is
installed.

Access Rights

Page 3-5 Add to Table 3-1

Own - Requires that there be a password for other users to access
the sharename.

Pub - In 3+Share is the same as Read access right.

Priv - In 3+Share gives Read, Write, Create, Exclusive, and Owner
access rights to the owner of the sharename.

New Error Messages

Failure starting COMMAND.COM

Meaning 3+Menus could not start the DOS command interpreter,
COMMAND.COM.

Action Make sure that your copy of COMMAND.COM is not corrupted
and is version 3.1 or higher. Do not change the COMSPEC
parameter to an invalid or outdated COMMAND.COM.

Failure starting your editor.

Meaning 3+Menus cannot find the text editor in the directories that it
is searching, or your editor is corrupted or does not run from DOS.

Action Check that you have your text editor in the path searched by
DOS. Ensure that your editor runs from DOS as well.

Menus cannot find COMMAND.COM

Meaning 3+Menus could not find the DOS command interpreter,
COMMAND.COM.

Action Make sure your COMSPEC parameter points to your DOS
command interpreter, COMMAND.COM.

This menu is Read-only. You may not change it.

Meaning You are trying to modify or delete a menu item on a menu to
which you have Read-only access. To modify a menu item, you
must have Read/Write/Create access to the menu.

3+Menus cannot find the proper demonstration files.

Meaning The demonstration files that you are trying to access are not
in the same directory as MENUS.EXE.

Action Check that the files are all properly named and residing in the
same directory as MENUS.EXE.

3+Menus cannot run your editor. 3+Menus will retry after taking
itself out of memory.

Meaning 3+Menus tried to run your text editor without unloading part
of itself, but there is not enough memory in your workstation to run
both 3+Menus and the text editor.

Action If the text editor still does not run after 3+Menus takes
itself out of memory, you will need to add more memory to your
workstation if you want to use the /Edit command with 3+Menus.
Normally, you will not have to do anything. Menus will run the editor
after unloading part of itself from memory.

To use the EDIT command, you must first specify an editor or word
processor in your PROFILE.SYS.

Meaning You are trying to use the /Edit command, but you have not
specified the text editor that 3+Menus should load.

Action Specify the text editor in your PROFILE.SYS file. Refer to
Chapter 1, "User Preference Parameters" for more information about the
/Edit command.

You can only edit files.
Meaning You have tried to access an item that 3+Menus does not
recognize as a file.

Action Make sure that you have selected a file, not a directory, to
edit.

You can only share a directory, a sub-directory or a pre-existing
sharename.

Meaning You are trying to share an item that is not a directory or an
existing sharename.

Action To give other users access to a file, add it to a directory
that has already been shared, or assign a sharename to the directory
that contains the file.

You cannot modify or delete a standard menu item.

Meaning You are trying to modify or delete standard menu items such as
Directories and Files, Log In/Log Out, Printer Connections, or
Shared Resources. These menu items cannot be modified or
deleted.

You do not own the selected sharename. You may only modify
YOUR sharenames.

Meaning You are trying to modify another user's sharename.

Action Be sure you have selected the right sharename.

You must be logged in to do that.

Meaning You are not logged in and are trying to run a menu item that
requires linking to a shared directory or a shared printer.

Action Log in and try running the menu item again.
