3+Open Backup Release Notes
This document provides information related to the 3+Open
Backup service for 3+Open MS OS/2 LAN Manager. 3+Open
Backup is installed when you install tape-delivered software
on the 3S/400. The title of the guide that the release notes
reference is the 3+Open Backup Guide.

Read the following information carefully before using 3+
servers with 3+Open servers:

Preparing a 3+ Backup Server for Use
with a 3+Open Backup Server

There are several steps you need to follow before using 3+
servers with 3+Open backup servers on a 3+Open network.
These are:

Follow the setup instructions in Appendix A.

Create sharenames for the 3+ root directories.

NOTE: Tapes produced by 3+ Backup cannot be read by
3+Open Backup.

Creating a Sharename for a 3+ Root Directory

To back up your 3+ server to a 3+Open server, you need to
create a sharename for the root directory and for every
partition of a 3+ Server on your network. The sharename
should be in the form of drive ID$; for example, D$. Perform
the following steps to share the root directory:

1. Log in as a Server User.

2. Modify the server password.

You need to add or change the server password to a
password that will be used for all of the new sharenames
used by 3+Open Backup. For example, you can change
the server password by typing:

3N MOD /PASS=pwd?

3. Share a subdirectory in the root directory.

If you already have a sharename for a subdirectory in the
root directory, you can skip this step. It is
recommended that you use the format in the following
example to create a sharename for each partition on your
server:

3F SHARE DriveD=D:\DriveD /rwc

(/rwc for read, write, create)

4. Share a subdirectory from the shared
subdirectory in step 2 with three backslashes
appended to it.

For example, to share the subdirectory named DriveD on
drive D: with the password PWD, and private access
rights:

3F SHARE D$=D:\DriveD\\\ /pass=PWD /priv

Add the password you assigned in step 1 to all
subdirectories, making this password the same for each
sharename to be used by 3+Open Backup.

Preparing the Tape and Backinfo
Sharenames for User Access

When 3+Open Backup is installed, it automatically creates two
sharenames and assigns them admin access rights for security
purposes. The permissions must be changed on these
sharenames for users to access them. You must delete these
sharenames and readd them to changes the access rights.

Changing the Tape Sharename

This sharename is automatically created by 3+Open Backup
when a tape is placed into the tape drive. Change the access
rights by performing the following from the 3+Open Lan
Manager menus interface:

1. Locate the Tape sharename on your tape
backup server.

2. Locate the drive ID attached to the sharename
and make a note of it.

You will need this information in a later step.

3. Delete the Tape sharename.

4. Select Add Share.

5. Select Disk directory.

6. Type the sharename, Tape, in the sharename
field.

7. Type in the drive ID for the path.

This is the drive letter you made a note of in step 2.

8. Make the number of Max. users one.

This field has a default of No limit. Remove the No
limit by tabbing over to it and pressing the [Space Bar].
Use [Shift] [Tab] to move to the Max. users field and
type the number 1.

NOTE: If you have user-level security, skip step 9.

9. Add a password for the sharename.

10. Select r,w,c from the Permissions box.

You only need read, write, and create permissions. If
any other checkbox is marked, remove it at this time.

11. Select OK to add the new sharename.

NOTE: You need to perform the steps in the following
section before you can save your profiles.

Changing the Backinfo Sharename

The Backinfo sharename controls access to tape functions such
as rewinding, erasing, and retensioning. Change the access
rights by performing the following steps from the 3+Open Lan
Manager menus interface:

1. Locate the Backinfo sharename and record
information about the sharename.

You should make a note of all of the information about
this sharename as you will need it later. The full path for
this sharename should be C:\3OPEN\3BACKUP\INFO.

2. Delete the Backinfo sharename.

3. Select Add Share.

4. Select Disk directory.

5. Type the Backinfo sharename in the sharename
field.

6. Type the full path for the Backinfo sharename.

You made a note of this in step 1.

7. Add any remarks and the amount of users.

NOTE: If you have user-level security, skip step 8.

8. Assign a password for the Backinfo sharename.

9. Delete Set attributes from the Permissions box.

You can leave all other permissions assigned.

10. Select OK to execute.

11. Select Done to return to the 3+Open Lan Manager window.

NOTE: After you have completed the steps for
changing both the Tape and Backinfo sharenames,
complete the following steps to save these changes to
your profile.

12. Select Save Profiles from the Config menu.

You see the filename SRVSHARE.PRO which is
automatically loaded each time you start your server.

13. Select OK and overwrite your existing file.

Setting Up for User Backup and Restore
Appendix A, pages A-6 through A-9

Exercise caution when assigning permissions for network
users to perform local disk backup and restore. Ask your
users to make sure they have their own tape in the tape drive
when they begin using 3+Open Backup. This is because
users have the capability to rewind, erase, and retension any
tape (including a server tape) that is in the tape drive.

It is always a good idea to remove your backup tape from the
tape drive when you are finished with a backup or restore,
especially if other administrators are using the same tape drive.

Setting Up 3+Open Backup

Installation and Setup

Appendix A, page 2

3+Open Backup is installed via tape-delivered software.
Before you can use 3+Open Backup, you should have
performed your installation using the 3+Open for 3Servers
Installation and Setup Guide.

After you have completed the installation, you must restart
your server. Once the server is restarted, the backup software
is initialized. It is located under the sharename FAMAPPS for
command line, and under the sharename OS2APPS for menus
interface.

User-Level Security

Appendix A, pages A-2 and A-3

If you attempt to perform a backup on your 3+ Open tape
server and it does not execute and you do not receive an error
message, make sure you have performed steps 1 and 2 on
pages A-2 and A-3.

General Use

Preserving User Account Information for
Backup on a 3+Open Server

If you need to back up all the server files and preserve the user
account information, you have to save a copy of it. The
NET.ACC file that is found under the directory called:
C:\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\ACCOUNTS controls user
account information. The NET.ACC file is kept open by the
system and will not be backed up. By saving a copy of it, you
will be able to recover your account information if a restore is
necessary.

You need to set up a command file and schedule it to run late
at night or just before performing a scheduled or immediate
backup.

1. Create the following command file and name it
SAVENET.CMD.

 echo off
Rem command file to save net.acc

NET SAVE protemp /y

NOTE: When you add the NET STOP (and NET
START) command to the file, you need to add this
command for each service you have installed. For
example, NET STOP Tapeservice, NET STOP 3Start.

 NET STOP Service name
 NET STOP server /y

NOTE: Enter the following two lines as one line in
your file.

 Copy C:\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\ACCOUNTS\NET.ACC
 C:\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\ACCOUNTS\BAK.ACC

 NET START server /y
 NET LOAD PROTEMP /y
 NET START Service name

2. Place the SAVENET.CMD file under the
following directory sharename on your tape
backup server:

 C:\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\NETPROG

3. Use the AT command to schedule a time to run
SAVENET.CMD.

Refer to the 3+Open MS OS/2 LAN Manager
Administrator Reference for complete information on the
AT and NET ADMIN commands. You need to use the
NET ADMIN command to perform this remotely.

For example, type the following as one line:

 NET ADMIN \\Servername /c AT 3:00
 /EVERY:M,T,W,TH,F SAVENET.CMD

The process of executing this file (SAVENET.CMD)
takes several minutes; all sessions will remain.

CAUTION: When this file is executed, all open
network files on the server are closed.

4. Perform the backup as scheduled.

Backing Up and Restoring Sharenames to the
Server from Menus Interface
If you are restoring sharenames that were backed up to a
3+Open backup tape to a 3+Open server, make sure the
sharename you intend to restore is the same sharename you
selected from the server. For example, if you intend to restore
the DOS\APPS sharename from the backup tape, select
DOS\APPS sharename from the list of server sharenames.

Parameter Limits for Automatic Scheduling
from the Menus Interface

If you want to schedule an automatic backup, you have many
options for each parameter. In a scheduled backup, the
number of characters is limited. If you make your backup
command too complicated, the scheduled backup is not
accepted.

For example, it is probably best not to schedule an automatic
backup of files modified since a date and time from the
Backup Modes dialog box. Also, if you schedule an
automatic backup by dates in the month from the Automatic
Schedule dialog box, try not to use more than five dates at a
time, or multiple entries. If you need to schedule several
backups during the month, schedule them by days of the week
instead of dates in the month.

Using Multiple Tapes during a Backup

When performing a backup that requires more than one
backup tape, there is a 2-3 minute delay before the backup
continues after the second tape is inserted.

Displaying the Tape Header

When attempting to display a tape header that is currently in
use, 3+Open Backup lets you know the tape is in use by
returning you to the 3+Open Backup screen background
panel.

Tape Status Error Messages

You may receive unpredictable error messages when you use
the STATUS command to check the status of a tape, because
the server might be busy with another operation. The backup
or restore will continue.

Duplicate Messages in Log Files

You may occasionally experience duplicate filenames in the
backup log file (BACKUP.LGX) during a backup. This does
not mean you have two copies of the file.

Creating a Tape Directory from the Command

Line Users who use the 3BACKUP command and use tapes that
have more than one volume ID (/V) should be aware of the
following when creating a tape directory. When a user creates
a tape directory, using /I, and specifies a single volume ID, the
previous volume IDs will be skipped over and the specified
volume ID and all consecutive IDs will be included in the tape
directory.

For example, if the user creates a tape directory of a tape that
contains the following volume IDsQSteve, Ron, Maria, and
Brenda and specifies a single volume ID such as /I:Ron, the
tape directory will skip over any volume ID that precedes the
selected one. It will list that volume ID along with every
volume ID that follows such as Ron, Maria, Brenda, and so
forth.

Creating Tape Directory Names

Each name you create for a tape directory should be unique. If
you attempt to create a tape directory with a name that already
exists, the operation fails, and you will not be able to create
the tape directory.

Restoring Subdirectories

If you do not specify the /S parameter during a restore,
3+Open Backup will restore only the names of each
subdirectory but not the files under that directory.

Setting Up Server Partitions to Work with
3+Open Backup

When you are setting up partitions on your 3+Open server,
reserve at least one drive ID for the 3+Open Backup service to
use. For example, there are 24 partitions available (C: through
Z:); you should use a maximum of 23 (C: through Y:).

Services Installation and Setup Program

Appendix A, page A-9

If you need to disable 3+Open Backup, you can do so through
the Services Installation and Setup program (3SIS). To start
the program, you should type:

3SIS

NOTE: Do not remove the 3+Open Backup service if you
intend to use it later.

When Users Cannot Access the Server for
Backup or Restore

When a user or admin performs a backup or restore, they link
to the tape drive and a session is established. This session
must end before another user can link to the tape drive. If
other users need to link to the tape drive before the session has
ended, it may be necessary to terminate the session by typing
the following:

NET USE \\Servername\Tape /D?

If a scheduled backup was performed, the network
administrator must type the following (as a single line) before
users can link to the tape drive:

NET ADMIN \\Servername
/c NET USE \\Servername\Tape /D?

NOTE: 3+Open Lan Manager automatically ends the session
after the time set in the LANMAN.INI file. The default is 120
minutes.

Maintaining a Link for 3+Open Backup under
Share-Level Security

To perform a backup under share-level security, the backup
server must be linked to the ADMIN$ sharename on the server
to be backed up. It is a good idea to link the ADMIN$
sharename to a drive ID. This link is automatically
disconnected by 3+Open Lan Manager after the time set in the
LANMAN.INI file by the autodisconnect parameter. When
this link becomes disconnected after the period of time set in
the LANMAN.INI file, you need to reestablish the link (from
a drive ID) on your server by typing the following:

NET ADMIN \\SourceServername /c Dir Z:?

NOTE: If you schedule backups to start in the middle of the
night, it is recommended that you place the command Dir Z: in
the AT file to automatically execute a few minutes before the
backup is scheduled to begin.

Using an Expansion Drive with 3+Open
Backup

If you plan to add an expansion drive to your tape server, you
need to perform six steps before adding your drive. The
3+Open Backup program automatically creates a sharename
for the tape drive and links it to the last available drive ID.
You need to temporarily delete this sharename before you add
your expansion drive. After you add the drive, 3+Open
Backup will share the tape sharename. Add your drive by
performing the following steps:

1. Delete the Tape Sharename.

Remove the sharename called Tape from the list of
sharenames on your server.

2. Select Save Profiles from the Config window.

You see the filename SRVSHARE.PRO which is
automatically loaded each time you start your server.

3. Select OK and overwrite your existing file.

4. Shut down your server.

5. Add the expansion drive.

6. Restart your server.

The tape sharename is automatically shared by 3+Open
Backup.

Backing Up 3+ Macintosh Files

3+Open Backup only supports the backup of 3+ Macintosh
files from currently inactive directories. If users are accessing
these files, the hidden file system causes constant changes and
must be continually updated, which does not allow 3+Open
Backup to back them up.

Naming the 3+Open Backup Server

It is recommended that you not name your tape server Backup,
as 3+Open Backup cannot distinguish this name from the
command BACKUP2. Thus you will not be able to perform
backups from the menus interface.

Unlinking from the Tape Sharename after
Scheduled Backups

When a scheduled backup executes, the backup server remains
linked to the Tape sharename. If a user needs to access the
tape drive before the autodisconnect function is performed
(located in the LANMAN.INI file), you must unlink the Tape
sharename by typing the following:

NET USE \\Servername\Tape /d

Backing Up Servers from a DOS Netstation

If you are using the Backman command on a DOS netstation,
you can only back up servers with names that have less than
eight characters.
