Hardware Release
IB/1-UG20
April 4, 1989

Part Number: 86-0175-00
             Revision 01

TO: Series/1 Product Users
FROM: 3Com Corporation
SUBJECT: IB/1-UG20
DATE: April 4, 1989

Enclosed is an IB/1-UG20 upgrade kit (Part Number: 23-0033-00) to be
used to reconfig ure a Series/1 product so that it can perform the
functions of an Internetwork Bridge. In this release memo, the
Series/1 product after the upgrade is referred to
as the IB/1-UG20.

This release memo lists the contents of the upgrade kit, and describes
the procedure for up grading your Series/1 product to an IB/1-UG20.
It also describes the firmware and soft ware compatibility
requirements of an IB/1-UG20.

** NOTE **

3Com changed its software version numbering scheme in early 1989.
Instead of using a five-digit number, such as 20060, 3Com now uses
two or three-digit numbers, such as 2.2 and 2.21. Higher version
numbers represent more recent releases. For e
xample, 2.21 is more recent than 2.2, 2.2 is more recent than 20060,
and 20060 is more recent than 20000.

Contents of the Upgrade Kit

The upgrade kit includes the following items:

MCPU20 board

96-TPI disk drive

"96TPI" label

Six shorting plugs

Installation

Follow these instructions to upgrade your Series/1 product to an IB/1-
UG20:

1. Install the 96-TPI disk drive on the Series/1 system, using the
procedure described below. Refer to Figures 4 and 5 for information
on the location of the components.

The 96-TPI disk drive, which is manufactured by TEAC, has a product
label indi- cating its model number. It may be one of the following
numbers:

  FD-55-F
  FD-55-FV-03-U
  FD-55-FV-13-U
  FD-55-FR-511-U

Before you install the new disk drive, verify that the drive is
configured according to Figure 1, 2, or 3. After you have installed
the shorting plugs, follow these steps to install the disk drive:

a. Power off the Series/1 system.

b. Disconnect the AC power cord of the Series/1 system.

c. Remove the top cover of the Series/1 system. The cover of this
unit is held in place by ball studs. Remove it by lifting each side
of the back overhang with a brisk upward motion, thereby disengaging
each ball stud separately.

d. Disconnect the floppy power cable from the disk drive.

e. Disconnect the floppy ribbon cable from the disk drive.

f. The floppy disk drive assembly is mounted on the Series/1 chassis
with four cross head screws at the base of the floppy disk drive
support bracket. To remove the floppy disk drive assembly, unscrew
the four screws, which are accessible from the underside of the
chassis.

g. Remove the 48-TPI disk drive from the support bracket by unscrewing
the crosshead screws that attach the disk drive to the bracket.

h. Apply the "96TPI" label to the front of the new disk drive as shown
in Figure 4.

i. Use the crosshead screws to attach the support bracket to the new
drive. Be sure that the screws are installed in the upper holes,
which are metric holes, on the support bracket.

j. Mount the disk drive back on the Series/1 chassis.

k. Reconnect the ribbon cable to the new disk drive.

l. Reconnect the floppy power cable to the new disk drive. Make sure
that pin 1 on the ribbon cable is connected to pin 1 on the edge
connector of the disk drive. The ribbon cable has pin 1 on the side
with the red edge; the connector on the
drive has markings indicating the pin numbers.

2. Install the MCPU20 board, using the procedure described below.
Refer to Figure 5, which illustrates the internal structure of the
Series/1 chassis, for additional information.

The only external jumper on the MCPU20 that you can alter is at
position A of jumper block E77. When a shorting plug is installed at
this location, the MCPU20 will repeat the self-test continuously
after power on.

** CAUTION **

When installing or removing boards, make sure that you have powered
off the Series/1 system. Otherwise, the boards will be damaged.

a. Disconnect the floppy ribbon cable from the FDC board, which is
mounted on the MCPU board.

b. Remove the MCPU board from Slot C of the Series/1 chassis.

c. Insert the MCPU20 board in Slot C of the Series/1 chassis, taking
care to slide the left and right edges of the board in the grooves of
the board guides for this slot.

d. Plug the floppy ribbon cable into the 34-pin connector at the top
edge of the MCPU20.

3. Remove the EC/2 board from Slot B of the Series/1 chassis.

4. Install the set of M1 IECM Revision 02A PROMs on the EC/2 board
according to the procedure described in the accompanying M1 IECM
PROMs Revision 02A release memo.

5. Replace the EC/2 board in Slot B of the Series/1 chassis.

6. Remove the IBC/M board from Slot H of the Series/1 chassis.

7. Install the M2 IBCM PROMs Revision 00G on the IBC/M board according
to the procedure described in the accompanying M2 IBCM PROMs Revision
00G release memo.

8. Replace the IBC/M board in Slot H of the Series/1 chassis.

9. Replace the top cover of the Series/1 system.

10. Reconnect the AC power cord to the Series/1 system.

11. If you wish to set the MCPU20 configuration parameters through the
console port of the newly-configured IB/1-UG20, refer to Section
4.3.3 of the Internetwork Bridge Installation and Operation Guide for
information on this procedure.

MCPU20 firmware is preset at the factory for the majority of
installations and probably does not need to be reconfigured.

When you power on the IB/1-UG20, it begins a series of self-test
diagnostics. Refer to Appendix B in the Internetwork Bridge
Installation and Operation Guide for information on self-test
diagnostics.

** NOTE **

Current software programs that operate with the MCPU board are not
compatible with the MCPU20 board.

Software Copy

Before you run SW/20-IB Version 2.0 on your IB/1-UG20, make a backup
copy of the SW/20-IB Version 2.0 distribution diskette. Refer to the
accompanying SW/20-IB Version 2.0 release memo for this procedure.
