3Server/500 Network Server Guide Release Note
Part No. 6690-00, 8/15/89

Electromagnetic Compatibility

The Federal Communications Commission and VDE information in this
release note replaces the information in the 3Server/500 Network
Server Guide.

Federal Communications Commission Notice

This equipment generates and uses radio frequency energy and if
not installed and used properly, that is, in strict accordance
with the manufacturer's instructions, may cause interference to
radio and television reception. It has been type-tested and
found to comply with the limits for a Class B computing device in
accordance with specifications in Subpart J of Part 15 of FCC
Rules, which are designed to provide reasonable protection
against such interference in a residential installation.
However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur
in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause
interference to radio or television reception, which is
determined by turning the equipment on and off, the user is
encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of
the following measures:

- Reorient the receiving antenna

- Relocate the computer with respect to the receiver

- Move the computer away from the receiver

- Plug the computer into a different outlet so that the
computer and receiver are on different branch circuits

If necessary, the user can consult the dealer or an experienced
radio/television technician for additional suggestions. The user
may find the following booklet prepared by the Federal
Communications Commission helpful:

How to Identify and Resolve Radio-TV Interference Problems.

This booklet is available from the U.S. Government Printing
Office, Washington, D.C. 20402, Stock No. 004-000-00345-4.

NOTE: In order to maintain compliance with the limits for a
Class B computing device, 3Com requires that shielded interface
cables be used when connecting to this device. Suggested cable
types are:

.BR;Thin Ethernet: 3C530-xxx or equivalent
.BR;Thick Ethernet: 3C120-xxx or equivalent
.BR;Transceiver Cable: 3C110-xxx or equivalent

Use only 3Com transceivers and drop cables when connecting to
3Com products for proper operation and reduced radio frequency
energy.

VDE Class B Compliance

We hereby certify that the 3Server/500 Network Server complies
with the RFI Suppression Requirements of Vfg 1046/1984. The
German Postal Service was notified that the equipment is being
marketed. The German Postal Service has the right to re-test the
equipment and to verify that it complies.

Optional Hard Disk Drive

3Com does not yet support the installation of a second hard disk
drive in a 3Server/500 network server, as documented in the
3Server Drive Option Guide. Check with your network supplier for
information about support for this option.

IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter

All adapters on a token ring network must be configured to
operate at the same speed. If your network uses 16/4 adapters
exclusively, you can configure it for either 4 or 16 megabit
operation.

The error message "Tokenboot Failed Error Code:0306" may indicate
that your 3Server/500 network server's base memory size is set
incorrectly. Access the maintenance mode menus and select the
correct base memory size for your configuration.

If the 16/4 is the only shared memory mode board installed,
select the 768 KB option. Configure the adapter to use IRQ3 and
CC000h for the ROM address.

When using the 3C program with a 3Server/500 network server that
has an IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter, you must use the full
12-digit network address anytime you enter the /ADDR parameter.

Be sure to write down the address of the IBM 16/4 Token-Ring
Network Adapter when it is displayed on the server's LCD in the
token boot mode. It can be difficult to determine the network
address of this board from it's documentation.

Memory Board Installation

A braided ground strap (fastened to the drive housing inside the
server) has been added for electromagnetic interference
suppression. To install a memory board, follow the procedures in
the 3Server/500 Network Server Guide. After you tighten the
memory board captive screw, complete the installation by
connecting the ground strap to the connector on the memory board
bracket.

COM2/3 Diagnostic

When you run the COM2/3 diagnostic test from the diagnostic mode
menu, both the COM2/3 port and the LocalTalk port are tested. To
run this test, install loopback plugs on both the COM2/3 and
LocalTalk ports.

LocalTalk Loopback Plug

The pin-to-pin connections listed in the 3Server/500 Network
Server Guide for the LocalTalk loopback plug are incorrect. The
correct connections are pin 6 to pin 8 and pin 3 to pin 5.

Hard Disk Errors

If you get the message "Failure reading hard disk," be sure the
SCSI host adapter board is firmly seated in the expansion slot.
