Installation Notes

.BR;3+Open Internet on Dedicated Servers
.BR;Internet, p. A-22
.BR;When you are installing the 3+Open Internet service onto a server
running under user-level security that is dedicated to this service
only, you need to create a user id in the account definition database
that is the same as the machine name.

.BR;MAXREMMAP Parameter
.BR;Internet, p. A-18
.BR;This parameter name was misspelled in the appendix as MAXREMAP.

.BR;Updating MS OS/2 Netstations
.BR;Internet, p. A-20
.BR;If you update an MS OS/2 netstation while it is running the Mail
Minder program, you may receive a file copy error. You can safely
ignore this message; the file causing the error does not need to be
updated.

.BR;Logging In as an Administrator to Use 3SIS
.BR;Internet, pp. A-7, A-22
.BR;You must be logged in as the service administrator to run the 3SIS
installation program. 3SIS will not allow you to install new services
with only a user capability.

.BR;'32' Error Using 3SIS
.BR;If you receive a '32' error while using the 3SIS installation program,
this indicates that you were attempting to copy onto a file that is
still currently open. There are two circumstances where this might
occur:

If you are installing the Update Diskette #1 from your hard disk, the
installation program attempts to copy 3SIS on top of the existing
3SIS. Appendix A in the Internet guide instructs you to install 3SIS
from the diskette in drive A:.

If you have NETADMIN running in one of your screen groups. The
installation process copies a new NETADMIN into your system.

.BR;Entering a Network Number in PROTOCOL.INI
.BR;If your network consists solely of 3+Open servers and if your network
does not have the optional 3+Open Mail service, it will be necessary
for you to enter a network number in the PROTOCOL.INI file of the
server with the installed Locator. A network without a network number
will not be recognized by the Internet service.

The configuration file can be modified with an ASCII text editor. The
line to change is:

Route1=

Add 0x followed by your network number. For example, if your network
number is 00040006, you would edit the line to read:

Route1=0x00040006

The network number can be found on the 3+Open tape cartridge for a
3Server386 network server and the LAN Manager Server #1 installation
diskette for PC servers. If your network consists of several 3+Open
servers, you can use any one of the network numbers that came with the
3+Open kits.

If you do not have or cannot find the network number, call 3Com's
Customer Service Organization for assistance.

.BR;Configuring an OS/2 Netstation Prior to Running 3ICM ADMIN and 3ICM
USER
.BR;Before you can begin to use the two Internet commands, 3ICM ADMIN and
3ICM USER, from an OS/2 netstation to configure and maintain your new
service, you are required to transfer over to the netstation's hard
disk several service files. These files cannot be executed over the
network, and, therefore, they must be present on the local hard disk.

Only those netstations with the files can be used to run the Internet
commands and maintain the service. If you have a large network, you
may want to transfer the files onto several netstations in order to
expand the number of netstations from which you can maintain the
service.

However, if you installed the 3+Open Internet service on a concurrent
server and you intend to always run the service commands from the
server, then this procedure is not necessary. The server and client
software files were installed on the server a s a standard part of the
service installation and, consequently, are already present.

A concurrent server that does not have the Internet server software
can also be used to run the 3ICM ADMIN and 3ICM USER commands to
maintain the service providing that the Internet client software is
installed on it.

The steps below tell you which files to transfer and where to transfer
them to on your OS/2 netstation or concurrent server.

1. Create a subdirectory called \3OPEN\3ICM on the OS/2 netstation or
concurrent server's hard disk.

2. Copy the 3ICM.HLP and HELPCOW.MSG files from the \3ICM subdirectory
on the 3+Open Internet diskette into the \3OPEN\3ICM directory on the
OS/2 netstation.

3. Copy the ICMAPI.DLL file from the \NETLIB subdirectory on the
3+Open Internet diskette into the appropriate subdirectory as given
below.

For an OS/2 netstation, copy the file into the
\3OPEN\OS2WKSTA\LANMAN\NETLIB subdirectory.

For an concurrent server, copy the file into the
\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\NETLIB subdirectory.

4. Set your path to \\server name\OS2APPS on the server which has the
3+Open Internet client installed.

.BR;NETSETUP and PROTOCOL.INI Parameters
.BR;Internet, pp. A-18, A-22
.BR;Before you run the NETSETUP program during an installation of 3+Open
Internet, you must first make a copy of your existing PROTOCOL.INI
file. Performing any modifications in NETSETUP after 3+Open Internet
has been installed removes all existing PROTOCOL.INI file references
for the 3+Open Internet service.

After you run the NETSETUP program, compare the PROTOCOL.INI
parameters in the two files, and replace or modify any parameters that
were changed by NETSETUP. Refer to "Concluding the Server Update
Installation" section in Appendix A for more information.

If you run NETSETUP to modify your 3+Open LAN Manager configuration,
you must reinstall 3+Open Internet for proper operation. Failure to
reinstall 3+Open Internet may result in an initialization error:

ICM5166 Bind failure. Please reinstall the 3+Open Internet service.

This error message indicates that the 3+Open Internet driver was
unable to bind to the XNS protocol stack.

.BR;Updating 3+Open Start Volumes
.BR;Start, p. 3-15

NOTE: You do not need to perform this operation again if you updated
the Start volumes after installing the 3+Open Name and 3+Open Mail
services.

After updating the 3+Open network servers and installing new services,
you must update the Start volumes with this procedure. This involves
copying over the new version of the LGL.SYS file into the Start
volumes and modifying the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Remember, you must perform this procedure on each Start volume.

1. Login as the administrator, link to the Start volume, and assign it
Private rights.

For instructions on linking to a Start volume and modifying its access
rights, refer to steps 1 through 4 of the procedure "Accessing a
Public Start Volume" in Chapter 4.

2. Copy the LGL.SYS file from the \3OPEN\DOSDRV\PROT\XNS subdirectory
on the updated server into the Start volume.

3. Copy the LOGIN.EXE file from the \APPS\DOSAPPS subdirectory of the
Name server into the Start volume.

4. Remove the REM comment from the following lines in the Start
volume's AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

 rem :3Plus_Login
 rem Login
rem if errorlevel 1 goto 3Plus_Login

You can modify the file with the EDLIN line editor, which is located
in the Start volume.

5. Perform steps 5 through 8 in the procedure "Accessing a Public
Start Volume" in Chapter 4 to reassign the volume Public rights.

The volume is now updated. Repeat this procedure on all remaining
Start volumes.

.BR;Running the Netpopup Service
.BR;3Com does not recommend running the Netpopup service on a remote
netstation. The response in displaying network messages is typically
slow and the service can impact the performance of the netstation. To
keep the service from running, remove the NET START NETPOPUP command
line from the netstation's AUTOEXEC.BAT configuration file with an
ASCII editor.

Network Interoperability Reference Documentation MCN; Chapters 2 and 3
Chapter 2 in Managing Combined Networks: 3+Open and 3+ discusses the
following topics:

 - necessary modifications for token ring networks.

 - the network number used by the Name service.

 - a 3+Open server running the Locator.

 - editing the route and network number lines in PROTOCOL.INI.

Chapter 3 in Managing Combined Networks: 3+Open and 3+ discusses the
following topics:

 - accessing your internetwork capabilities through the REMSERV
command and AUTOEXEC.BAT modifications.

 - connecting to a remote network; using the REMSERV command and the
LAN Manager NET USE command.

General Notes

.BR;Token Ring Drivers and Interoperability
.BR;To ensure interoperability between 3+ and 3+Open token ring networks,
you must have the proper 3+Open Token Ring drivers. These are
contained in the \3OPEN\DOSDRV\MAC directory on the 3+Open LAN Manager
servers. Make sure that these drivers are upgraded for token ring
networks only, and that these driver names are modified in the
CONFIG.SYS file.

.BR;Flushing the Cache Buffers
.BR;You must always flush the cache buffers before turning off or
rebooting a 3+Open server. Refer to the 3+Open for 3Servers Release
Notes for instructions and procedures on flushing the buffers on a
3Server386. Refer to the 3+Open MS OS/2 LAN Manager User Guide for
instructions and procedures for performing this on a PC server.

.BR;Network Number Mismatch
.BR;A network number mismatch may occur in one of the two following
circumstances:

If you remove and then reinstall 3+Open Name. If you do this, be sure
to use the same network number when you reinstall it as you used
originally. Otherwise, a network number mismatch message will be
entered by the Locator service in the error log.

If you insert a network number in the PROTOCOL.INI file that is
different from that in the Name service.

Memory Requirements for Network Servers
For best performance and reliability, 3Com recommends the following
memory requirements for your 3+Open servers.

 # of Services* PC Server** 3Server386
 1 4 MB 4 MB
 2 4 MB*** 4 MB***
 3 5 MB 4 MB***
 4 5 MB 6 MB
 5 5 MB 6 MB
 6 na 8 MB

NOTE: Install 3+Open Internet on a separate 3Server386 if you intend
to run it with the other 5 services and have less than 8 MB of memory.

* a full set of 3+Open services include: 3+Open Start, 3+Open Mail,
3+Open Name, 3+Open Backup, and 3+Open Internet. (The 3+Open Backup
service is designed for the 3Server386 only.)

** applies to both concurrent and dedicated PC servers. 3Com further
recommends that the OS/2 memory swapping feature be turned off on all
3+Open servers. This option is controlled with the MEMMAN line in a
PC server's CONFIG.SYS file or in a 3Server386's CONFIG.OS2 file. You
should change the line to read:

 memman=noswap, nomove

This change prevents a potential problem with the MS OS/2 memory
management software. Although the problem appears infrequently, it
can cause the server to stop under heavy load conditions.

*** 3Com recommends increasing the memory requirements by 1 MB for
servers that have either 3+Open Name, 3+Open Mail, or 3+Open Internet
installed.

.BR;OS/2 Editor
.BR;The 3+Open Internet service does not supply an OS/2 editor.

.BR;High-Speed Data Errors
.BR;Under heavy traffic and high transmissions speeds, the COM1: port of
the 3Server386 (or the upgraded 3Server3) can cause data corruption.
For this reason, 3Com does not recommend using COM1: at 9600 baud or
above.

.BR;High-Speed Data ErrorsQ286 Type Servers
.BR;3Com currently does not recommend using the DOS compatibility box on
286-based servers when using high-speed modems at 9600 baud or above.
Invoking the DOS compatibility box under these conditions affects the
performance by interrupting the high-speed connection and generating
excessive receive errors.

.BR;Serial Overrun and Checksum Errors Internet , p. 5-16
.BR;When 3+Open Internet is running at high transmission speeds under
moderate to heavy loads, some checksum and serial overrun errors are
considered acceptable.

.BR;OS/2 Limitation for Printers
.BR;Regardless of the number of server comm ports on a 3+Open server, OS/2
only permits a maximum of 8 printers to be configured.

.BR;TrailBlazer Modems and 3+Route Connectivity
.BR;TrailBlazer modems on 3+Route that connect to 3+Open Internet servers
may observe a returned termination code of NO CARRIER. This
termination code may be returned when 3+Route disconnects due to a
state of INACTIVITY or SCHEDULE EXPIRATION.

Administrator Notes

.BR;3Audit Program
.BR;Included on the 3+Open Update diskette is a special program called
3Audit that you can use to view a server's audit log. This program
works with the LAN Manager Net Audit Utility. 3Audit displays the
status event calls for for the Name, Mail, and Internet services
marked "unknown" in the Net Audit log.

3Audit is automatically copied into a server's
\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\NETPROG subdirectory during the update procedure.
To use the program, log on to the server, then type the command
3AUDIT. The server's log is displayed on the screen.

The program has three menu items under its Commands menu:

Open Allows you to view the audit log of any 3+Open network server.
This program prompts you for a server name.

Clear Clears all messages in an audit log.

Exit Exits the 3Audit program.

To access the Commands menu, press [Alt] and then type C for Commands
or press the down arrow key.
