.BR;3+Mail Installation
.BR;3+Mail comes on three 5.25-inch and two 3.5-inch diskettes. You can
use either set of disks to install the service.

You will need the following items to install the service on your
network server:

.BR;A PC netstation connected to the 3+ network. (The service cannot be
installed from a Macintosh netstation.)

.BR;Installing Server Software
.BR;Install your new 3+Mail server software with the 3INS program by
following the directions in Chapters 2 and 3 of the 3+ Installation
and Setup Guide. After you have completed the installation, start the
3OPT program as described in Chapter 6 of the 3+ Network Tuning Guide
and verify that you have no more than 10 mail server processes
(MSPROCS) as described in Chapter 11 of the same guide. Adjust the
parameter, if necessary.

.BR;Installing User Software into a Shared Directory
.BR;1. Link drive D: to the shared directory, APPS, where the general
network applications programs reside.

2. Make D: the current drive.

3. Put the Mail User #1 diskette into drive A:. (If you are on a
netstation with 3.5-inch disk drives, insert the diskette labeled Mail
User #1 & 2.)

4. Start the user software installation program by typing:

 D>a:muinstal

5. Follow the screen prompts and insert the Mail User #2 diskette when
requested. (This applies only to the 5.25-inch installation
diskettes.).

6. When the DOS prompt returns, 3+Mail user software is installed.
Remove the Mail User diskette from drive A: and store all your
original 3+Mail diskettes in a safe place.

NOTE: An updated copy of the MSREDIR.EXE file (dated 9/17/86) is
copied to your shared directory. Be sure that this copy of
MSREDIR.EXE is the one loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT file when you start
up your netstation.

Installing User Software Onto a Netstation's Hard Disk

1. Start up the netstation.

2. Make the hard disk (drive C:) the current drive.

3. Insert the Mail User #1 diskette in drive A:. (If you are using a
netstation with 3.5-inch disk drives, insert the Mail User #1 & 2
diskette.)

4. Start the user software installation program by typing:

C>a:muinstal

Follow the screen prompts and insert the Mail User #2 diskette when
requested. (This applies only to 5.25-inch diskettes.)

5. When the DOS prompt returns, the 3+Mail user software is installed.
Remove the Mail User diskette from drive A: and store all your
original 3+Mail diskettes in a safe place.

NOTE: An updated copy of the MSREDIR.EXE file (dated 9/17/86) is
copied to your hard disk. Be sure that this copy of MSREDIR.EXE is
the one loaded by your AUTOEXEC.BAT file when you start up your
netstation.

Installing User Software Onto a Startup Diskette
To install 3+Mail user software on a netstation's startup diskette,
use a netstation with two diskette drives. Not all of the files for
3+Mail 1.3.1 will fit on one 5.25-inch diskette. To run 3+Mail and
Mail Minder from a diskette you will need only these four files:
MAIL.EXE, MAILHELP.HLP, MMINDER.EXE, and MAILTEXT.BIN.

1. Start the netstation with DOS 3.1 or later.

2. Place a blank, formatted diskette in drive B:.

3. Put the single Mail User #1 diskette in drive A:. (If you are
using a netstation with 3.5-inch disk drives, insert the Mail User #1
& 2 diskette.)

4. Make A: the current drive.

5. Manually copy the required files onto your disk, as follows:

A>copy mail.exe b:

A>copy mminder.exe b:

If you are using an AT&T 6300 or AT&T 6300+, you must also copy an
additional file:

A>copy att6300.com b:?

6. Remove the Mail User #1 diskette from drive A: and replace it
with Mail User #2 diskette. Copy the files containing the help and
prompt messages onto your disk as follows:

A>copy mailhelp.hlp b:?

A>copy mailtext.bin b:?

7. The 3+Mail user software is now installed. Remove the Mail User
diskette from drive A: and store all your original 3+Mail diskettes in
a safe place.

NOTE: To run 3+Mail on the network using a diskette, be sure to log
in to the network first.

.BR;3+Mail Minder Installation
.BR;Installing 3+Mail Minder
.BR;No separate installation is required. 3+Mail Minder is automatically
installed by the MUINSTAL.BAT file on the Mail User #1 diskette.
Refer to the 3+Mail User Guide for instructions on loading 3+Mail
Minder.

.BR;3+Mail Minder Incompatibility
.BR;Be certain that you run only one version of Mail Minder at a time.
When you first invoke the MMINDER command after starting your
netstation, Mail Minder installs itself as a memory-resident program.
Subsequently invoking a previous version of the
MMINDER command may cause your netstation to hang.

.BR;Upgrading Version 1.0 Mail Servers
.BR;If you have 3+Mail servers with version 1.0 on your network, you need
to upgrade them. This release of 3+Mail includes the most recent
version of 3+Mail Server (version 1.3.2). You can install this new
version of 3+Mail Server using the instructions given above.

If this software upgrade is not made, and network users attempt to use
3+Mail Minder, they will get the following warning message when they
load 3+Mail Minder:

***3+Mail Minder requires a 3+Mail Server 1.0.1 or greater

3+Mail Minder will load even if the mail server has not been upgraded,
but, when checking the status of mail, the Mail Minder status window
will display the following message:

Needs server 3 1.0.1

NOTE: Only Version 1.0 mail servers already on your network need to
be upgraded.

.BR;Starting 3+Mail Minder on AT&T 6300 and 6300+ Netstations
.BR;Start 3+Mail Minder by loading the Mail Minder program into your
netstation's memory, where it resides until you turn off the
netstation. 3+Mail Minder uses approximately 7 KB of your
netstation's memory.

1. Start your netstation using the 3+ Netstation Startup diskette.

2. Log in to the network.

3. Check to ensure that during installation of the 3+Mail user
diskettes, the ATT6300.COM file has been copied.

4. Link drive D: to the APPS directory.

5. Make D: the current drive.

6. Type:

D>att6300

7. Type:

D>mminder

3+Mail Minder will load in memory and display the current default
settings for the user- configurable parameters.

.BR;Editing AUTOEXEC.BAT on an AT&T 6300 or 6300+
.BR;If you intend to run 3+Mail Minder on an AT&T 6300 or 6300+
netstation, include the command ATT6300 immediately before the command
MMINDER in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Remote Users Starting 3+Mail Minder on AT&T 6300 and 6300+ Netstations
Mail User Guide, page 1-9

1. Start your netstation with the 3+Remote Netstation Startup
diskette.

2. Log into the network. If you are not logged in when 3+Mail Minder
executes, 3+Mail Minder will still load and the error message "user
not logged in" will appear.

3. Type:

A>att6300

4. To start 3+Mail Minder, type:

A>mminder

.BR;3+Mail Administration
.BR;/NODOS Switch
.BR;Mail User Guide, page 4-2
.BR;With 3+Mail, you can prevent users from accessing the Switch to OS
feature from the Main Menu, thereby restricting their use to 3+Mail.
This is done by adding the /NODOS switch to the user's Mail command
line.

For example, the command line

MAIL E:\inbox /NODOS

starts 3+Mail, locates the user's main inbox in the "inbox"
subdirectory of the user's HOMEDIR, and prevents the user from
accessing the Switch to OS feature.

.BR;ETH.SYS Error -536
.BR;This error occurs only on 386 netstations of 20 MHz or faster with an
EtherLink adapter. A software timing loop causes the Ethernet driver
to timeout while waiting for a settling time period to expire. The
3Com Customer Service group will provide
an ETH.SYS patch.

.BR;MSREDIR Version
.BR;Mail User Guide, Appendix A
.BR;A copy of MSREDIR is installed as part of the 3+Mail user side
installation. The version of MSREDIR that should be installed with
3+Mail is dated 9/17/86. Versions dated earlier than this may
generate an error message or make it appear that messag
es disappear from your inbox. If you experience these problems,
check the date on the MSREDIR file and, if the file is older than
9/17/86, copy over the more recent version from another startup disk.

.H1;General Use
.BR;[Ctrl]+B and [Ctrl]+R Control-Key Combinations
.BR;Mail User Guide, page C-7
.BR;To prevent the accidental Registered and Batch send of a message you
are currently editing, the following two control-key combinations are
disabled until you press [F10]-Done:

 [Ctrl]+R Registered Send
 [Ctrl]+B Batch Send

.BR;Attachment Limitations
.BR;Mail User Guide, page 3-13
.BR;The Mail User Guide refers to 25 as the maximum number of attachments
that can be sent with a mail message.

Sending the 26th attachment is currently allowed with the Mail
service, despite the 25 attachment limitation and the following error
message:

Cannot have more than 25 attachment files. Press [Return] to
continue.

.BR;Viewing Binary Attachments
.BR;Mail User Guide, page 2-4
.BR;An error condition can occur when you view binary attachments you
retrieve. Specifically, this happens when you retrieve a message that
includes a large .COM, .EXE,. or .BIN file in the Attach: message
header field. When you retrieve such a messag
e and view it using the 3+Mail [F2] key, and then scroll through the
file using the [PgDn] key, 3+Mail may hang.

.BR;Mail Messages on a Full Disk
.BR;A problem may result if you try to retrieve a mail message when the
disk storing your mail inbox is full. You will notice that the inbox
display is properly updated for the new message, but the file that is
supposed to hold the message will be empty and cannot be deleted using
the Mail service. The only way to delete the message is from the
operating system prompt.

To do this, note the message number shown in your inbox display, exit
from the Mail program, and change to your inbox directory. Each
message is stored in this directory as a file with the extension .MSG.
The message filenames correspond to their message number. Delete
the .MSG file that corresponds to the message number that you noted. For
example, if you want to delete message 120, then delete the file named
120.MSG.

.BR;Mail Inbox on Diskette
.BR;If you are storing your Mail messages in a folder on diskette, do not
remove the diskette while the folder is open. Otherwise, the Mail
program may freeze and you may have to reset your netstation.

.BR;International Characters
.BR;Mail User Guide, page D-1
.BR;A few international characters are not fully supported in 3+ products
at this time. They are not accepted as three-part names and are not
case sensitive.

.BR;Moving Messages into a New Folder
.BR;Mail User Guide, page 4-2
.BR;When you move a message into a new folder created with the New Folder
option, you may find that the message is still listed in the old
folder. And if you try to read or delete the message, an error
message is displayed. To correct the problem, use [F3] to delete the
message that you moved and ignore the error message. It may be
necessary to open another folder and then reopen the original folder
before this works. You will not experience this problem with folders
created with the Open Folder option.
