The same procedure is used to install modules into the LinkBuilder
concentrator, regardless of module type, chassis model, or network access
method. The modules have the same dimensions and are interchangeable
between slots in any concentrator. (The LinkBuilder Module Reference
Sheets give a brief description and illustration of the models
currently available.) The only procedural difference is the placement
of installed modules in the LinkBuilder Model 500 as compared with the
LinkBuilder Model 100. Following are recommendations for installing
LinkBuilder modules.

Note: The LinkBuilder 500 and 100 are not "hot swappable;" that is,
you cannot install or remove modules with the power turned on.

Before installing a module, make sure that you have:

   * Concentrator installed with power turned off. Do not install the
      power cord yet.

   * Any necessary cables are already in the wiring closet

   * Have a slot ready in the concentrator. If necessary, remove
a blank faceplate to gain access to a slot.

Recommendations for Placing Modules:

* Group modules by network access method to facilitate network
administration and network monitoring; for example, twisted pair
with twisted pair, coaxial with coaxial, etc.

* Within each network access method group, place the modules in
the following order (for the LinkBuilder 500, the order is left to
right; for the LinkBuilder 100, it is top to bottom):

1. The module that performs the retiming/repeater function or
the network management module (NMM).

2. Additional management modules.

Every NMM is factory-configured to operate as a primary NMM. When you
install two NMM's, you must set jumpers to designate one as the secondary
NMM. Do this by changing the settings of the jumpers at JP2,JP3, and JP4
from PRI to SEC. When only one NMM is installed, be sure the jumpers are
set in the PRI position.

3. All host modules.

By following these recommendations, it will be easier for you to see the
indicators on the retiming and NMM cards, as well as to access the ports on
the modules and allow for easier removal for setting on-board switches.

Installing the Module:

To install the module, follow these steps:

1. Verify jumper settings.

Diagrams in the module installation reference sheets show jumper settings
and locations for the various module types. First, locate the jumpers on
your module's printed circuit board. Then, make sure the jumpers match
those on the diagram in the appropriate reference sheet.

  * Jumpers with an off/on option: change those settings that
do not match the appropriate diagram by pulling off the strap
and repositioning it on the jumper pins in the correct location.

  * Jumpers shown with empty pins: These jumpers are for factory
testing of the module, not for customer use. The pins should be
empty when the module is operational.

2. Make sure the inserter/extractor lever at the bottom of the module is
flipped to the down position.

Note: For the LinkBuilder 100 concentrator, hold the module with the
LinkBuilder label closest to the power switch.

3. Push the module in the concentrator, into the card guides only until
you can hook the inserter/extractor lever over the front edge of the cabinet.

4. To seat the module connectors in the backplane, press the lever up and
in until it is flush with the front of the module.

Verifying the Installation:

Turn on the power and check the Status LED at the top of the LinkBuilder
500's front panel (or on the right in a LinkBuilder Model 100 front panel).
If the module is correctly installed, the LED will light up. See the
module reference sheet to find the location of the Status LED on the various
models.
