Page C-11 of the 3+ Remote User's Guide PROFILE.SYS explains the
configuration and procedure for manually dialing the Route/Remote
server and then logging in.

The only advantage to dialing manually is that you do not have to
specify pauses in the 3R DIAL string. Since 3R DIAL takes care of the
dialup, connection, and handshaking, 3Com recommends that 3R be used
exclusively. If you must use the manual-dial method, be forewarned that
this works on a limited number of modems. The modem that this was tested
with on the server end was a Trailblazer Plus. We successfully tested
the Hayes V-series 9600, Hayes Ultra 9600 and the Bizcomp 2400 on the
remote end. The Hayes Smartmodem 2400 did not work on the remote end.

Following are two methods for dialing the modem, other than 3R DIAL.

Caution: The following methods of initiating a remote connection
are not supported by 3Com, because they have not been
             subjected to exhaustive testing.

Method 1:

1. Make sure the modem is attached to COM1.

2. From a DOS prompt enter the command:

       echo at&c1&d2&q0&w > com1 <CR>

This only needs to be done once as the parameters are saved into profile 0.

3. From a DOS prompt, type the following line but DO NOT press <CR>:

      echo ath1o > com1

4. Using a standard AT&T-type phone attached to the "Phone" jack on the
back of the modem, dial the phone number.

5. When the modem at the server end answers, press <CR>.

This will cause the remote modem to take over the line. You can now hang
up the phone.

6. You should now hear the modems getting sync'ed.

7. From a DOS prompt type "login <CR>" after the modems begin to sync and
before the CD (Carrier Detect) light is displayed.

Method 2:

1. Make sure the modem is attached to COM1.

2. From a DOS prompt enter the command:

      echo at&c1&d2&qo&w > com1 <CR>

This only needs to be done once as the parameters are saved into profile 0.

3. From a DOS prompt enter the command:

      echo atdt(phone#); > com1 <CR>

(This step replaces steps 2, 3, and 4 of Method 1.)

4. From a DOS prompt enter the command "login <CR>" after the modems
begin to sync and before the CD (Carrier Detect) light is displayed.

5. In PROFILE.SYS for the remote workstation specify:

       Line1=ATD
       Modem=OTHER

Remark out any other LINE#= lines.
