Title: Using U.S. Robotics Courier HST Modems with 3+Route
Date: 12/5/89

Copyright 3Com Corporation, 1991. All rights reserved.

The U.S. Robotics Courier HST modems will work with 3+Route using the
following configurations. The modem is not fully Hayes compatible and
therefore provides less functionality. 3Com does not support or recommend
the U.S. Robotics Courier HST modem but we have done limited
testing as follows:

3+Route server configuration:

    Modem Type: Other
Baud Rate: 9600 (Testing at 19.2k proved unreliable.)
    Timeout: 1

Cable between the server and the device: Standard 25-pin
straight through cable.

The dial string must include "ATDT" (for tone dial) or "ATDP" (pulse)
before the phone number.

Modem Settings:

Dip switches are located on the back of the modem.

    Dip Switch Position Meaning
    ---------- -------- -------
    1 up Normal DTR operation
    2 down Numeric result codes
    3 down Result codes enabled
    4 down Echo is off
5 up Auto answer on first ring
6 up Normal state of carrier detect
7 up Result codes in originate and
                                    answer modes
    8 down Command recognition enabled
    9 up Escape response
10 up Load configuration from NRAM at
                                    power on
quad switch up Normal RS-232 pin assignments

The modem must also be configured with AT commands. Use a terminal or PC
with terminal emulator set to 9600 baud. Connect to the modem with a
straight through cable. Send the string "AT&B1&H1&R2&W" to the modem.
Send "ATI5" to verify your settings.

    Command Meaning
    ------- -------
&B1 Lock in the bit rate at the current speed (9600)
&H1 CTS flow control on transmitted data
&R2 RTS flow control on received data
    &W Write configuration to NRAM
    I5 Display NRAM configuration

In testing, the modem link proved unreliable at 19200. The link would
drop and a server would have to redial the line. Disabling the modem's
error control was completely unreliable.
