Title: Cause of 3+File Error Type:12 ID:-54

The 3+ Macintosh File Service keeps hidden DOS files in the server's
directories that contain information about what makes the DOS files on the
server into Macintosh files. These files can be identified by the greek
sigma character in the filenames and by names such as MACVOL, MDIRID, and
MACDIR.

These files should *never* be flagged read-only by the DOS ATTRIB or a
similar command. The MacFS must be able to open them for read/write, and
cannot do so if they are flagged read-only.

When hidden Macintosh files in the root directory of a sharename are
flagged read-only, and Macintosh clients try to link to the sharename, they
will get the error "Unknown file system error type: 12 id:-54" and be unable
to establish the link.

If Macintosh clients try to open a folder of a mounted volume where the
hidden Macintosh files are flagged read-only, then they will most likely see
an empty folder. Since MacFS cannot open the macdir files it returns the
folder as empty.
