Using 3+Mail on the Macintosh with 3+Open is no different from using
it with 3+.

When the Macintosh talks to a Mail server, it does not know whether
the Mail service is running on a 3+ server or a 3+Open server. It is
simply talking to a Mail service over XNS. Thus, accessing Mail from
a Macintosh does not depend on the type of server you are talking to.
On the Macintosh you simply load the XNS driver and then run the Mail
program.

In July 1989, 3Com released 3+Mail for Macintosh, version 1.5. Included
in the package was the 3+MailCP driver, a stripped-down version of the
3+File driver used to access 3+ servers and Mail. 3+MailCP is the XNS
driver and Chooser interface to allow you to log in to the Name service
without the Network Window that you get with 3+File.

For a Macintosh on Ethernet, you simply load either 3+File (if you
have 3+ servers on the net that you want to access) or 3+MailCP (if you
have only 3+Open servers on the net and you need XNS only to access Mail),
then run 3+Mail for Macintosh 1.5.

In the past, Macintoshes on LocalTalk have gone through a 3+NetConnect
server to access either Mail or 3+ servers. However, because there is
no 3+Open NetConnect, we provide you with a 3+Mail LocalTalk Gateway that
you can install with the rest of the 3+Open for Macintosh services.
The LocalTalk Gateway uses the Internal Routing Feature (IRF) of 3+Open's
XNS stack to do the same type of LocalTalk/AppleTalk routing that
3+NetConnect provides.

This means that if you have Macintoshes on LocalTalk they must still go
through either a 3+NetConnect server or a server running the 3+Mail
LocalTalk Gateway. It also means that you do not install the LocalTalk
Gateway unless you have Macintoshes on LocalTalk that need to access Mail.
If your Macintoshes need to access Mail but are all on Ethernet, you simply
load one of the two XNS drivers. If your Macintoshes are on LocalTalk
but do not need to access Mail, you do not install either the XNS driver
on the workstation (because 3+Open for Macintosh does not use XNS for
file and print access), nor should you install the LocalTalk Gateway on the
server (because its only purpose is to replace 3+NetConnect).

Note: The 3+Mail LocalTalk Gateway component of 3+Open for Macintosh
has been tested and will be supported only for Mail access. If your
Macintoshes on LocalTalk want to talk to 3+ servers for file and print
access through the LocalTalk Gateway, it may work, but 3Com does not
guarantee it.

The Gateway can be installed on any 3+Open server on the network that
also has the AppleTalk stack installed on it. The Gateway does not have
to be installed on the server that has the LocalTalk segment connected to it
as 3+NetConnect required. This means that you could use a device such as
the Shiva FastPath to connect the LocalTalk segment to the Ethernet and
still be able to access Mail through the single FastPath. (This is
different than 3+NetConnect, which required all of the packets to go
through the server that was connected to the LocalTalk segment.)
