Following are instructions for doing offline backups and restores with
3+Open Backup v1.2. Practical uses for this procedure include:

  *  migrating from 3+ to 3+Open
  *  keeping data secure
  * making a full server backup without having to stop services or
     rename files

If a user is migrating a server from 3+ to 3+Open, this procedure can be
used to install 3+Open on the same drive as 3+. Afterwards, the user can
run INSTAID, reboot the server, and get a backup of the data in 3+Open
format.

Backing Up a Server:

1. Start a 3Console connection to the server to be backed up.

2. Go to the C:\3plus directory and create a file called S_NAME (if
it does not already exist) which contains a temporary three-part server
name such as TEMP:SERVER:NAME.

3. Go to the A:\3backup directory and type 3BMENDOS.

4. From the Backup menu, back up drive C:.

5. (Optional) Create a tape directory to verify that the data backed
up successfully.

6. Reboot the server as a 3+Open server.

7. Make sure no users are accessing files, then use Backman or Backup2
to make an APPENDED full server backup. You can choose to only back up
selected data, but a full server backup is recommended.

8. Use either the 3+ or 3+Open directory options to make sure the
data was backed up.

Restoring Data:

1. Start a 3Console connection to the server to be restored.

2. Run 3DISK386 to format and partition the disk. Make sure the partition
sizes you choose can handle the amount of data of the partions on the
tape; otherwise, you won't be able to do a full restore. However, you
will be able to selectively restore files to other partitions.

3. Restart the 3Console connection.

4. Create a file S_NAME in C:\3plus which contains a temporary
three-part name (TEMP:SERVER:NAME).

5. Run 3BMENDOS from A:\3backup and do a full restore of drive C:.

6. After the restore has completed, go to C:\os2\install and run
INSTAID to create the OS/2 boot record.

7. Reboot the server in server mode.

8. Link to the os2apps sharename on the server and and use Backman or
Backup2 to do a full server restore. You can do a partial restore at
this time or you can restore files to another location.
