Title: Probing Synoptics Hub from Control Panel

The Graphical LinkBuilder application can be used to probe Synoptics hubs
from the command line. This capability can also be added to the control
panel.

Assumptions: It is assumed that you are completely familiar with the use
of ViewBuilder, the process of probing a hub, and comfortable editing
crucial ViewBuilder configuration files.

Note: Probing Synoptic hubs is neither a supported feature of ViewBuilder
nor was it tested during the development cycle of the product. Use this
capability at your own risk and discretion.

Process: Certain ViewBuilder executables have control panel icons
associated with them. LBPROBE.EXE, the Graphical LinkBuilder Application
is one of them. By adding another occurrence of that application in the
control panel configuration file NMEXES.DAT, we can add an icon which
allows us to probe Synoptics hubs directly from the control panel.

Warning: Editing NMEXES.DAT is a critical operation which, if done
incorrectly, can prevent the control panel from starting. Before editing
this file, make a backup copy!

1. From an OS/2 screen group, go to the following subdirectory:

    C:\VIEWBLDR\DATA\CPANEL

2. Make a backup copy of NMEXES.DAT.

3. Using your favorite text editor, edit NMEXES.DAT. Append the
following line to the end of the data in the file:

    "Synoptics Hub Probe" ac -i -k -c lbprobe.exe /h:

Save the file and exit the editor.

4. Go to the control panel and press F3. Press the OK button to stop the
control panel.

5. From the command line, restart the control panel by executing the
following command:

    start cpanel

6. Inspect the Launch Area side of the control panel. You should see two
occurrences of the Graphical LinkBuilder Application icon. They will be
labeled:

    LinkBuilder Application
    Synoptics Hub Probe

7. Double click on the Synoptics Hub Probe icon. A program parameter box
will appear. Type in the MED name of the Synoptics hub and press the OK
button. For example, you might respond with:

    /h:\IP\128_1_1_245

where \IP\128_1_1_245 represents the MED name for the hub.
