Title: Probing Synoptics Hubs

The Graphical LinkBuilder application probes a 3Com LinkBuilder hub. The
outcome of the probe provides information to the MED and the map database.

The Graphical LinkBuilder application determines the type of hub, the types
of cards installed and in which slots the cards are located. The Graphical
LinkBuilder application sends this information to the MED in the form of
card and port instance information. The Graphical LinkBuilder application
also sends the information to the map database to build the appropriate map
icons for the hub.

The Graphical LinkBuilder application as configured on the control panel
will only probe 3Com hubs. However, it can be used to probe Synoptics hubs
from the command line.

Assumptions: It is assumed that you are completely familiar with the use
of ViewBuilder and the process of probing a hub. It is also assumed that
you are familiar with the process of manually creating MED entries.

Note: Probing Synoptic hubs is neither a supported feature of ViewBuilder
nor was it tested during the development cycle of the product. Use this
capability at your own risk and discretion.

Process:

1. Create a MED entry for the Synoptics hub. You will need to know the IP
address and the Ethernet address of the hub. For the sake of uniformity,
create the hub MED entry in the same manner that your 3Com hubs have been
created. The default creation format would be to place the MED entry in
the IP domain, using the IP address as the name.

2. From the command line, type in the following command:

    lbprobe /h:<MED name>

where <MED name> is the MED name of the Synoptics hub created in step 1.
